- the problem arises, however, that due to the high water content of the printing pastes used for this purpose, the printed papers swell locally due to moisture absorption of the paper substance and therefore throw themselves away.
- the energy required to dry such products is also high, and corresponds approximately to the amount of water applied from the printing paste.
- the object of the invention described below was therefore to achieve the production of perfect, dimensionally stable transfer papers using aqueous-based printing pastes which avoid the negative phenomena described above.
- the new process takes advantage of the principle of using foamed dyeing liquors as printing pastes in which the foam consistency acts as a thickener. Due to the high degree of foaming of the liquors in the range from 1:10 to 1: 150, preferably from 1:40 to 1:80, it is achieved that so little water gets onto the paper that local swelling of the same no longer matters and the associated loss of dimensional stability is largely eliminated.

Fine-pored, consistent foams are created.
- the foams produced in this way from the different colors are successively printed on a web of transfer paper on a rotary printing press and this is then dried.
- the printed paper has excellent dimensional stability.
Abstract
When printing transfer papers with normal aqueous printing pastes, the problem of dimensional stability of the papers arises as a result of the local swelling of the paper substance. These disadvantages are overcome according to the invention in that foamed dye liquors are used as printing pastes, in which the foam consistency acts as a thickener. This enables a reduction in the moisture in the printing pastes.
Description
The present invention relates to a process for the production of transfer papers for thermal transfer printing with sublimable dyes, in particular transferable disperse dyes, on printing machine types customary in textile printing.
The production of transfer printing papers of the type defined above is generally known. As a rule, the papers provided as transfer carriers are printed with aqueous printing pastes containing thickeners, which contain the suitable dyes. With these methods, which have been customary for the mentioned purpose, the problem arises, however, that due to the high water content of the printing pastes used for this purpose, the printed papers swell locally due to moisture absorption of the paper substance and therefore throw themselves away. In view of this, it is difficult to dry the ink carrier so that it becomes smooth and dimensionally stable again, which has a great influence on the faithful reproduction of the design to be transferred. The energy required to dry such products is also high, and corresponds approximately to the amount of water applied from the printing paste.
Attempts have therefore already been made to counteract this impairment; however, other shortcomings had to be accepted. For example, the use of solvent-based, partially aqueous or as a liquid medium only printing pastes consisting of solvents has the disadvantage of environmental pollution and odor nuisance and means that the printing pastes and thus the ready-made transfer paper become more expensive.
The object of the invention described below was therefore to achieve the production of perfect, dimensionally stable transfer papers using aqueous-based printing pastes which avoid the negative phenomena described above.
This object is now achieved in that one or more dye-containing, aqueous liquors with the aid of surfactants are processed into fine-pored foams, the transfer carrier is printed in the desired pattern with the foams thus produced and then dried.
The new process takes advantage of the principle of using foamed dyeing liquors as printing pastes in which the foam consistency acts as a thickener. Due to the high degree of foaming of the liquors in the range from 1:10 to 1: 150, preferably from 1:40 to 1:80, it is achieved that so little water gets onto the paper that local swelling of the same no longer matters and the associated loss of dimensional stability is largely eliminated.
The drying costs of the finished ink carrier can consequently also be reduced to the extent that the water content of the printing pastes is reduced, and environmental pollution is ruled out due to the absence of solvents.
According to the process, anionic or nonionic products with high foaming power are suitable as surfactants which allow the foaming of the liquors. Examples include: alkylaryl sulfonates, alkyldimethylamine oxides, hydroxyalkane sulfonates, alkane sulfonate and mixtures of such compounds.
Are also compared to the normal pressure '.pasten reduced levels of the customary for thickeners or binders paste to ensure good adhesion of the dyes on paper - to be foamed fleets can, of course - if necessary.
Due to the effectiveness of the foam, the new process allows a dye to be applied to the transfer carrier, which is primarily a surface print, with the result that the required dye concentrations in the foamed batch are reduced. The amount of film-forming agent that can be reduced in this way (to prevent abrasion) and the largely dispensability of a thickener in general then lead to easier dye transfer with yield advantages in the course of the sublimation process in thermal transfer printing.
Each is an aqueous liquor containing 80 g of the Disperse Yellow 54 dye with the C.I. 47020 or 10 g of the dye Disperse Red 60 with the CI No. 60756 or 10 g of the dye Disperse Blue 56 with the CI No. 63285, and to which 20 g / l of an alkylaryl sulfonate are added in each case, is foamed by blowing in air as a propellant in a ratio of 1:50. Fine-pored, consistent foams are created.
The foams produced in this way from the different colors are successively printed on a web of transfer paper on a rotary printing press and this is then dried.
You get a perfect print. The printed paper has excellent dimensional stability.
