Abstract

Can lids made of metal, lacquered on both sides and featuring a pouring outlet covered over with a closure strip having a sealing surface of polyamide, often exhibit inadequate bond strength between the closure strip and the lacquered can lid surface. The bond strength can be increased if the can lid, after the closure strip has been sealed onto it, is heated until the polyamide melts and then the can lid with closure strip is subsequently cooled.

Description

The invention relates to a method for producing a can lid painted on both sides with at least one pouring opening covered by a sealed sealing strip with a sealing surface made of polyamide. This prior art corresponds to the preamble of claim 1 and is known from EP-A-64948. This document was published on November 17, 1982 and therefore falls under Article 54 (3) EPC.

Lids made of aluminum, tinplate or tin-free steel (TFS) are known for beverage cans provided with one or more pouring openings, the pouring openings being covered with a sealed sealing strip. Can lids made of metal are usually provided on both sides with a lacquer layer, for example with a coating of a phenol-epoxy resin. Known sealing strips consist of an aluminum thin strip which is coated on its surface to be sealed with a coating of a thermoplastic material, for example polyamide.

In the case of metal can lids coated on both sides with a sealed sealing strip made of an aluminum-polyamide laminate, the adhesive strength of the polyamide sealing layer on the painted lid surface has increased for cans with high internal pressure - for example cans containing carbonated drinks after a long storage period at temperatures above 30 ° C - proven insufficient.

In view of these circumstances, the inventor has set himself the goal of creating a method of the type mentioned at the outset with which the adhesive strength of the sealing strip on the lid can be further increased.

To solve this problem, the can lid is heated after the sealing strip has been sealed until the polyamide has melted and then cooled.

With the method according to the invention, it is possible to provide metal covers which are painted on both sides with a well-adhering sealing strip. It has been found that, particularly in the case of the thickness of the lid material required for cans containing carbonated drinks, the sealing tools cannot heat the sealing strip sufficiently to the sealing zone without the interior coating of the lid overheating and being damaged in the process.

By heating the lid after the sealing strip has been sealed, the adhesive strength between the sealing strip and the lid is considerably increased. In addition, mechanical stresses which arise when the pouring opening is punched out in its area are largely reduced.

To the required melting of the polyamide - z. B. polyamide-1 - to effect, heating the lid in a temperature range of 175 to 300 ° C is sufficient. The duration of the heat depends on the level of the temperature used, i.e. H. at higher temperatures a shorter period of time is sufficient.

Further advantages, features and details of the invention result from the following description of a preferred exemplary embodiment and from the drawing; in its single figure, this shows a can lid with a sealing strip sealed on.

A can lid 1 - z. B. from an aluminum alloy, coated on both sides with a phenol-epoxy resin - is provided with a pouring opening 2, which is covered by a sealing strip 3 made of a thin aluminum strip with a polyamide 12 coating over a SiegeInaht 4 of an example width of 2 to 3 mm.

The closure strip is provided with a free-standing tear tab 5. The area of the closure strip 3 spanning the pouring opening 2 and the tear-open tab 5 have an embossing 6.

The experiments below show the advantageousness of the method according to the invention.

  • Siegelzeit : 0,6 sec.
  • Spezifischer Siegeldruck : 1 000 N/cm2
Can covers with a pouring opening were made from a sheet of aluminum alloy with a thickness of 0.33 mm, which was coated on both sides with a phenol-epoxy resin. To cover the pouring opening, a sealing strip made of an aluminum-polyamide 12 laminate was sealed under the following conditions:
  • Upper sealing tool temperature: 250 ° C
  • Lower sealing tool temperature: 130 ° C
  • Sealing time: 0.6 sec.
  • Specific sealing pressure: 1 000 N / cm 2

Some of these lids with the sealing strips sealed on were reheated in an air circulating oven at a temperature of 270 ° C. for 20 seconds.

Die Dosen wurden anschliessend bei 40 °C gelagert ; der Innendruck betrug dabei 4,4 bar.40 cans with a nominal diameter of 65 mm were filled with 0.3 l of a carbonated beverage. Lids with a sealing strip sealed under the conditions mentioned, with and without reheating, were crimped onto 20 cans each. The cans were then stored at 40 ° C; the internal pressure was 4.4 bar.

The sealing strips of the non-reheated lids already came off after 5 days of storage. With the reheated lids, there was no sign of the detachment of the sealing strips even after a storage period of 3 months.
