Abstract

In high pressure discharge lamps, for example, high pressure sodium lamps improved colour, closer to white, has been sought, for example by the use of external heat shields to raise the temperature of the dose amalgam.
The present invention introduces a wick (18) disposed around the shank (2) of one electrode. Effective control of vapour pressure and therefore lamp colour can be obtained by suitable tailoring of the wick dimensions or materials or both.
