- the present invention relates to a process of annealing and quenching in the process for elongated metal elements made of fine or special steels with an austenitic structure, comprising at least one annealing operation by external heat supply under a reducing or neutral atmosphere, and a quenching operation by contact with circulation of a coolant. It applies more particularly to the annealing and quenching in the process of shielded electrical elements comprising at least one conductive core, a coating with mineral insulator and an outer sheath of fine or special steel with an austenitic structure.
- Document FR - A No. 2,227,332 of the Applicant describes a heat treatment process for shielded electrical elements with mineral insulation in a stainless steel sheath, between two successive draws of the elements from a blank, which is carried out at parade of the blank and breaks down into three consecutive phases, the annealing of the sheaths, by high-frequency heating, the annealing of the cores of the cable in a thermally controlled enclosure, with heat transmission from the sheaths to the cores and possibly addition additional heat, and quenching of the sheaths and of the cores by a circulation of water in contact with the sheaths.
- Such a process which is well suited for the annealing and quenching of elongated metallic elements in a steel with a well defined austenitic structure, is difficult to adapt to the annealing and quenching of metallic elements in different grades of structural steel austenitic, or of variable diameter and thickness. It has sometimes been found that the steel is not sufficiently hardened, leading to the appearance at certain points of ferritic structures or that of abnormal magnifications of the crystals, reducing the mechanical characteristics and possibly causing breakage during subsequent mechanical treatments.
- the present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks, and to provide a method and a device for annealing and quenching such elongated metal elements, which is easy to adjust according to the grade of steel, its diameter and thickness, and which avoids any danger of the appearance of a ferritic structure or crystals of abnormal size.
- the method according to the invention is characterized in that the flow rate and the temperature of the cooling fluid are adjusted so that the elements do not undergo any transformation of their austenitic structure during their quenching.

This arrangement ensures great uniformity in the heating of the blanks. It also makes it possible to change a defective heating bar during operation. Hydrogen intended to form a reducing atmosphere is introduced into the tubes at the outlet of the annealing furnace by fittings such as 15, only one being shown.
- the hydrogen flows counter-current to the electrical elements, because the circulation of water in the quenching device prevents its flow in the other direction. It comes to escape at the other end, where it is burned (flame 15A). It could of course, if necessary, be recovered and recycled.
