Abstract
PURPOSE:To high efficiently, continuously manufacture a tapered wire rod with excellent strength and buckling-resistivity, by passing a round steel wire rod, heated to hardening temperatures by the electric induction heating, through the gap of cross rolls possible to repeatedly changed its rolling force, and then, by applying a heat treatment to this rod. CONSTITUTION:The round steel wire rod 1, held in the payoff stand 2, is uncoiled by pinch rolls 3a, 3b and is straightened by the rod straightening roll 4. The rod 1 is next sent into the induction heating coil 5 by the tension of the pinch roll 10, is heated to hardening temperatures, and is passed through the cross roll 6 while holding its temperature. The rod 1, in the cross roll 6, receives the rolling force from a couple of rolls depending on the centrifugal force caused by the change of revolving speed of the rotary ring, and is plastically worked and formed into a rod provided with diameters changed repeatedly from large to small and from small to large. Then, the rod 1 is quenched by the quencher 7 and is hardened over all its section; thereafter, the rod 1 is passed through the induction heating coil 8 for tempering and next the cooler 9; finally, the rod is coiled by the stand 11.
