Description

The invention relates to a water pump for internal combustion engines, in which the delivery of the coolant can be regulated.

Pumps for liquid-cooled internal combustion engines are known. Your pump impeller is rigidly connected to the drive shaft and is always driven when the motor is running. Such pumps are usually located in the main circuit for the cooling liquid and are connected downstream of the heat exchanger (cooler). The heat dissipation from the engine via the cooling liquid is controlled by means of a temperature controller which is connected to a valve which is also arranged in the main circuit of the cooling system. When the valve is closed, that is, when the operating temperature of the engine has not yet been reached, the zirlculation of the coolant is maintained via a short-circuit line which is arranged between the radiator inlet and the radiator outlet. If the temperature controller and valve are arranged as a unit in the main circuit for the liquid, additional hose connections can often not be avoided. Another disadvantage is that the pump impeller is always driven via the drive shaft regardless of the need for heat transfer to the cooler of the cooling system.

Hier will die Erfindung Abhilfe schaffen. The invention seeks to remedy this. The water pump is characterized in that a pump impeller is arranged in a housing on a drive shaft provided with a coupling element, and the pump impeller is a device for a has a non-positive connection with the coupling element.

The adhesion can be done by electromagnetic forces or friction. In the first case, the coupling element is designed as an electromagnet, the current supply of which can be controlled by a corresponding temperature control device known per se. If the frictional connection takes place, the coupling element is designed as a friction element and the pump impeller is not only arranged to run freely, but also axially displaceably on the drive shaft, and is connected to a temperature control device. In this case, the temperature control device expediently consists of a working device with a plunger, e.g. B. a working piston, a membrane, a strain gauge and the like. The tappet is mounted on the end of the pump impeller facing away from the coupling and expediently in an extension of the drive shaft. If the work equipment and temperature sensor are arranged in one housing, the liquid should be able to be flushed around on all sides.

In the following, the invention is explained in more detail with reference to a drawing that shows only one embodiment. It shows
  • 1 shows a longitudinal section through the water pump according to the invention with the pump impeller closed
  • Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section through the water pump with an open impeller

  • 4 shows a section IV - IV of FIG

A water pump is shown in the figures, in which in a housing 1 on a with a coupling element 4th provided drive shaft 2, a pump impeller 3 freewheeling and in the event that the coupling element 4 is designed as a friction element - is arranged axially displaceable. If the coupling element 4 is designed as a friction element, it can consist of the carrier part 5, which is rigidly connected to the drive shaft 2 by means of cotter pin 7 or the like, and the friction lining 6, which is connected to the carrier part 5 z. B. is positively connected. Instead of the friction lining 6, the carrier part 5 can also be provided with an electromagnet (not shown). In this case, the coupling element 4 is expediently arranged on the drive shaft 2 outside the housing 1. On the end face of the pump impeller 3 facing the coupling element 4 there is a device 8, e.g. B. a adapted to the geometry of the friction lining 6 friction surface for a positive connection with the coupling element 4. On the end facing away from the coupling element 4 of the pump impeller 3, the plunger 10 of a temperature control device 9 is mounted. The temperature control device 9 consists of a working device connected to a temperature sensor. The temperature sensor can be filled with expansion wax or the like, the working device consists of a working piston, a membrane with a plunger and the like. The temperature control device 9 is arranged in the inlet for the pump impeller in such a way that liquid can be washed around it on all sides. Figures 3 and 4 show the corresponding design of the housing 1. The temperature control device is held by a kind of claw 11 and prevented by the support 12 from tilting. Claw 11 and support 12 are connected to the housing 1 via webs 17. 13 indicates the inlet for the coolant into the pump, 14 the outlet channel and 15 the outlet. At 16, the housing 1 is divided. When the pump impeller 3 is closed (FIG. 1), the same is covered with a cover 18 provided with an inlet connection. In this embodiment, the housing is provided with a type of weir connector 19 over which the inlet connector of the cover 18 slides.

In order to largely avoid leakage currents, it is advisable to keep the free cross section between the housing and the pump impeller on the suction side of the pump as small as possible. During operation of the motor, the wax or the like of the temperature sensor expands in accordance with the temperature of the cooling liquid and causes a pressure on the plunger 10, which in turn axially displaces the pump impeller 3 until it is non-positively connected to the drive shaft when a desired temperature of the cooling liquid is reached, i.e. . H. the pump conveys liquid. If the temperature of the coolant drops below the target temperature, the frictional connection can be loosened. H. the pump impeller is decoupled. In the case of friction surfaces with a geometrically different design than shown in FIG. 1, it may be necessary to support the decoupling by a spring (not shown).

The drive shaft 2 can be driven via drive belts or directly via the crankshaft of the engine.
