Abstract

A disposable gas lighter is formed with a liquid-fuel reservoir having a well molded into the housing at an upper portion thereof and provided with a plug member having a plurality of positions including a first position in which a passage is provided into the reservoir, a second position in which the well and the flow can be completely closed off and a third position in which the member is completely clear of the well to enable the well to serve to accommodate a valve system and a flow control device for the lighter. The axially displaceable member, having the aforementioned three positions, may be molded as part of the lighter housing and the well and can be broken loose when it is necessary to fill the reservoir.

Description

The present invention relates to a method of filling a disposable gas lighter of the wickless type and a lighter allowing its implementation.

Disposable gas lighters generally have a head formed by the upper wall of the body in which a tank is arranged and, in this wall, a well is formed which passes right through it, and which is intended to serve as housing for the valve comprising a valve burner and a pressure reducer sandwiched between the valve seat and its support piece. This head also supports the ignition mechanism of the lighter. The head of the lighter is generally made of plastic material molded simultaneously with the body of the lighter, the end opposite to the head is closed by an attached and welded bottom.

Currently filling the tank with gas is carried out at the bottom, which requires a bottom comprising a filling orifice equipped with a closing nail. This base is therefore a piece that is difficult to mold and delicate to weld on the body, given the complexity of its shape.

A- 47708.The present invention aims to reduce the cost of disposable gas lighters of the wickless type and in particular of the type described and claimed in EP-A-47708.

To this end, the method which it relates consists, on the one hand, in equipping the well formed in the head of the body of the lighter to serve as housing for its valve, with a shutter movable between three positions, a first position in which a passage is provided for the flow of liquid fuel between the shutter and the internal wall of the well, a second position in which the well is completely closed and a third position in which the shutter is completely released from the well, and, on the other hand, to use this well as an opening for filling the tank with liquid fuel.

Thus, the operations of injection and welding of the bottom in which it is no longer necessary to provide the filling orifice are simplified and safer, the bottom being simpler and better balanced, in particular when the welding is carried out by ultra -sons.

In addition, the bottom and the body can be made of the same material and since they do not necessarily include foreign bodies, they can be recovered.

According to a simple embodiment of the invention, in the lighter allowing the implementation of the above-mentioned method, on the one hand, the free internal end of the well intended to serve as housing for the valve has an internal shoulder and, on the other hand, there is provided a shutter associated with the inner end of the well and having three segments, a first segment corresponding to the inner end of the shutter, of the same section as the bore of the inner end of the well and having at least one longitudinal groove providing a passage between it and the wall of the inner end of the well, when this segment is engaged in the precise shoulder of the well, that is to say when the shutter is in the tank filling position, a second segment of the same section as the first but having no groove and ensuring the closing of the tank when this second segment is engaged in the aforementioned shoulder of the well, which corresponds to a position of waiting for the shutter and finally a third segment of smaller section than the other two and ensuring complete release of the lower end of the well by the shutter when this third segment is brought to the level of the shoulder of the well, c '' ie when the shutter is in its position corresponding to the use of the lighter.

Preferably, at the origin, the shutter forms only one piece with the well to which it is linked by legs or a sectionable veil by axial displacement of the shutter relative to the well.

Advantageously, the aforementioned legs or veil connect the free edge of the inner end of the well and the shoulder separating the second and the third segment of the shutter.

Normally, when the shutter is brought into the position of use in which it completely releases the well, it falls into the tank in which it can move freely, thus being able to cause the sound of a bell.

To eliminate this drawback, according to an improved embodiment of the invention, on the one hand, the free end of the third segment of the shutter has a grooved extension and, on the other hand, the support piece of the filter which constitutes the lower part of the valve has a cylindrical passage of the same section as the aforementioned extension, able to be engaged on it not only to allow the displacement of the shutter from its closed position of the reservoir to its position of use lighter when placing the valve in its well, but also to ensure the retention of the shutter in this position.

In any case, the invention will be clearly understood with the aid of the description which follows with reference to the appended schematic drawing, FIGS. 1 to 4 show, seen in axial section, the well formed in the head or upper part of the body of the lighter to serve as housing for the valve and equipped with a shutter according to the invention, respectively, in the position for filling the tank with liquid fuel, in the end of filling position and after the valve has been put in place, ie in the position of use of the lighter.

As previously indicated in the drawing, only the wall 2 of the upper part of the body of the lighter is shown. In this wall is formed a well 3 intended to serve as a housing for the lighter valve. In Figure 4 of the drawing, there is shown a part of this valve, namely the part 4 forming the seat of the valve burner not visible in the drawing, the regulator filter 5 and the support part 6 against which the filter 5 is applied by part 4.

As shown in the drawing, the well 3 has its largest part projecting from the inner face of the wall 2, that is to say projecting inside the tank 7 delimited by the body of the lighter and which is intended to receive the liquid fuel.

Selon l'invention, l'extrémité intérieure du puits 3 présente un épaulement interne 3a destiné à coopérer avec un obturateur 8 à trois segments superposés 8a, 8b et 8c, et de section adaptée à celle de l'épaulement 3a.According to the invention, the inner end of the well 3 has an internal shoulder 3a intended to cooperate with a shutter 8 with three superimposed segments 8a, 8b and 8c, and of section adapted to that of the shoulder 3a.

In a simple way, the section of the shoulder 3a, like that of the whole of the well 3, is cylindrical and consequently that of the shutter 8 is also cylindrical.

The segment 8a formed at the end of the shutter 8 furthest from the outer end 3b of the well 3, and the central segment 8b, have a diameter identical to that of the bore of the shoulder 3a, so to allow their sliding engagement in the shoulder 3a, this engagement however requiring a certain axial thrust, so that any spontaneous movement of the shutter 8 in the bore of the shoulder 3a is excluded.

Le troisième segment 8c de l'obturateur 8, c'est-à-dire celui ménagé à son extrémité opposée à l'extrémité interne comportant le segment 8a, a un diamètre inférieur à celui de l'alésage de l'épaulement 3a, de telle sorte que, lorsque ce segment 8c est placé au niveau de l'épaulement 3a, l'obturateur 8 est totalement libre par rapport à l'alésage de l'épaulement 3a.The third segment 8c of the shutter 8, that is to say the one formed at its end opposite the internal end comprising the segment 8a, has a diameter less than that of the bore of the shoulder 3a, of such that when this segment 8c is placed at the shoulder 3a, the shutter 8 is completely free relative to the bore of the shoulder 3a.

The internal segment 8a also has at least one longitudinal groove 8d providing a passage for the liquid fuel when the shutter is in its position in which this segment 8a is at the level of the shoulder 3a as illustrated in FIG. 2.

Figures 2 to 4 illustrate the method of filling this lighter.

The shutter 8 being in the filling position as illustrated in FIG. 2, that is to say with its inner segment 8a at the level of the shoulder 3a, the reservoir 7 can be filled by the upper end 3b from the well 3 used as a filling orifice, the fuel being able to pass through the groove 8d to reach the tank 7.

When the filling is finished, it suffices to move the shutter 8 in the direction of arrow 9 to bring the central segment 8b to the shoulder 3a as illustrated in FIG. 3, which corresponds to the closing of the reservoir 7 This movement can be carried out using the filling nozzle which can act directly on the shoulder 8e which separates the segments 8b and 8c from the shutter 8.

When the lighter's reservoir 7 is filled, it can be temporarily stored in this state or be immediately transmitted to the valve positioning station which must be placed in the well 3. During this positioning, it is the support piece 6 of the filter 5 which causes a new displacement of the shutter 8 in the direction of the arrow 9, so as to bring the segment 8c at the level of the shoulder 3a, so that the shutter 8 is found entirely released from said shoulder.

This shutter can naturally fall inside the tank 7 but, preferably, to avoid that it risks causing a bell phenomenon by being free to move in the tank 7, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, on the one hand, the support part 6 of the filter 5 has a bore 6a ending in a frustoconical orifice 6b and, on the other hand, the shutter 8 has beyond the segment 8c an extension 8f of same diameter as the bore 6a of the support piece 6 and connected to the segment 8c by a frustoconical shoulder 8g of profile complementary to the frustoconical end 6b of the bore 6a of the support piece 6. In addition, the extension 8f has 8h grooves allowing the flow of liquid or gaseous fuel.

This arrangement has the advantage that after having been completely released from the shoulder 3a, the shutter 8 is held in place by engagement of its extension 8f in the bore 6a of the part 6, as illustrated in FIG. 4.

Comme cela ressort de l'examen de la figure 4, la présence de l'extrémité tronconique 6b de l'alésage 6a et de l'épaulement tronconique 8g du prolongement 8f procure un entraînement positif de l'obturateur 8 par la pièce d'appui 6.As appears from the examination of FIG. 4, the presence of the frustoconical end 6b of the bore 6a and of the frustoconical shoulder 8g of the extension 8f provides a positive drive of the shutter 8 by the support piece. 6.

La figure 1 montre que l'obturateur 8 peut être obtenu directement de moulage avec le puits 3 auquel il peut être lié par des pattes ou un voile de matière 11 reliant le bord de l'extrémité interne du puits 3 à l'épaulement 8e de l'obturateur 8, ces pattes ou ce voile 11 pouvant être sectionnés par simple déplacement de l'obturateur 8 dans le sens de la flèche 12 opposé à celui de la flèche 9, de manière à amener l'obturateur 8 en position de remplissage, comme illustré sur la figure 2.FIG. 1 shows that the shutter 8 can be obtained directly from molding with the well 3 to which it can be linked by lugs or a web of material 11 connecting the edge of the internal end of the well 3 to the shoulder 8e of the shutter 8, these tabs or this veil 11 which can be cut off by simple movement of the shutter 8 in the direction of the arrow 12 opposite to that of the arrow 9, so as to bring the shutter 8 into the filling position, as shown in figure 2.

A lighter enabling the method according to Claim 1 to be performed and of the type without a wick and in which the upper wall (2) of the container (7), or head of the lighter, has a well (3) which passes right through the latter and is used to accommodate the valve comprising a valve burner and a pressure reducing filter (5) sandwiched between a part (4) forming the valve seat and a part (6) for the support of the filter (5), characterised in that, on the one hand, the free internal end of the well (3) used to accommodate the valve has an internal shoulder (3a) and, on the other hand, there is provided a closure member (8) which is associated with the internal end (3a) of the well (3) and has three segments, a first segment (8a) corresponding to the internal end of the closure member (8), having the same cross-section as the internal diameter of the inner end (3a) of the well (3) and having at least one longitudinal groove (8d) providing a passage between the well (3) and the wall of the internal end (3a) of the well (3) when this segment (8a) is engaged in the above mentioned shoulder (3a) of the well (3), i.e. when the closure member (8) is in the position for the container (7) to be filled, a second segment (8b) having the same cross-section as the first (8a) but having no groove and ensuring the closure of the container (7) when this second segment is engaged in the above mentioned shoulder (3a) of the well (3), which corresponds to a waiting position of the closure member (8), and finally, a third segment (8c) having a cross-section which is smaller than the two others and ensures that the lower end (3a) of the well (3) is completely released by the closure member (8) when this third segment (8c) is brought to the level of the shoulder (3a) of the well (3), i.e. when the closure member (8) is in its position corresponding to the use of the lighter.
3. A lighter as claimed in Claim 2, characterised in that at the beginning the closure member (8) forms a single part with the well (3) to which it is connected by lugs or a web (8e) which may be divided into sections, by axial displacement of the closure member (8) with respect to the well (3).
4. A lighter as claimed in Claim 3, characterised in that the above mentioned lugs or webs (11) connect the free edge of the internal end (3a) of the well (3) and the shoulder (8e) separating the second (8b) and third segment (8c) of the closure member (8).
5. A lighter as claimed in any one of Claims 2 to 4, characterised in that, on the one hand, the free end of the third segment (8c) of the closure member (8) has a channelled extension (8f) and, on the other, the support part (6) of the filter (5), which forms the lower part of the valve, has a cylindrical passage (6a) having the same cross-section as the above mentioned extension (8f), adapted to be engaged thereon not only so as to enable the displacement of the closure member (8) from its position in which the container (7) is closed to its position in which the lighter may be used, when the valve is positioned in its well (3), but also so as to ensure the retention of the closure member (8) in this position.
