(Cl. 67-71) The present invention relates to a novel construction of a burner valve of a liquefied gas lighter, more particularly to such mechanism as that of a burner valve which can be used, at the same time, as a fuel injection valve; namely, in accordance with the present invention, two principal functions, as that of an injecting operation and of a discharging operation can be freely provided.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide a burner construction, wherein a burner valve is not only constructed to discharge a gaseous fuel from the reservoir, but also for supplying the liquefied gas into the reservior by exhausting the air contained in the reservoir.
In the conventional gas lighters, a constructional form for providing a discharge and injection of the gaseous fuel have been individually performed through the use of different valves.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a burner construction, wherein a single valve was particularly designed to perform both functions, that of injection and discharge. Since an injection and discharge of the gaseous fuel is provided by a single valve in accordance with the present invention, any other device for injecting fuel into the tank which were conventionally fixed on the bottom or side wall of the conventional lighter becomes unnecessary.
Moreover, it can also prevent the gas-leakage which were liable to be occurred in the conventional gas lighters.
In addition, the injecting operation thereof has been effectively simplified as the injecting operation can be performed at an upright position whereby a constant injection can be thus performed.
Also, the gas lighter provided in accordance with the present construction minimizes the production costs compared with that of any other conventional lighters due to its mostly simplified construction.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an axial section of a valve designed in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 2 is an axial section of a valve indicating, the operation as a burner valve in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 3 is an axial section of a valve indicating the injection of gaseous fuel into a fuel container; and
FIG. 4 is a section along the lines IV-IV of FIG. 1.
Now, referring to the accompanying drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1 and 2, illustrating an embodiment of the present invention, a valve housing member 1 shaped substansially as a double-stepped cylinder is screwed to the upper wall of a fuel container a.
A resilient packing member 2 shaped in annular form is provided at the lower stepped portion of a flange for providing an effective connection between the valve housing member 1 and an adjusting cylindrical member 3 having an adjusting wheel 4 on the upper part thereof which is screwed into the valve housing member 1.
Now, in the lower part of the valve housing member 1, several passageways 5 are disposed in longitudinal direction.
A burner cylinder 6, having a flange 7 at the lower part,
on which is placed an annular packing material 8 is re'leasably held down and supported by a spring 9 provided at the bottom part of the burner cylinder 6.
A cylindrical bore 10 with a literal passage 11 communicating with the packing member 2 is formed in the burner cylinder 6.
An annular ring 12 fitted to the inner circumference of the adjusting wheel 4 and another ring 13 is fitted to the inner circumference of the valve housing member 1 whereby an annular space 14 is provided which is sealed off by these two rings 12 and 13.
On the other hand, a ring 15 fitted at the outer circumferential portion of the adjusting cylindrical member 3 gives an effect for sealing an intercommunication with the valve housing member 1.
Referring to FIG. 1, the upper part of the burner cylinder 6 is so constructed with a smaller diameter, and a plate 17 having a projecting portions 18 on the bottom thereof is positioned at a flange portion 16, The projecting portions 18 are adapted to fit on the upper part of the adjusting wheel 4.
A control plate 19 having a substantially fork shaped end fitted on the plate 17 clamps the upper part of the burner cylinder 6.
It will be thus apparent from the foregoing description, that according to the present invention, a gas discharge operation, referring to FIG. 2, can be carried out in such manner that the control plate 19 pushes down the plate 17 such that the projecting portions 18 of the bottom surface of the plate 17 reach the upper surface of the adjusting wheel 4 so that the burner cylinder 6 is pressed down whereby the packing member 8 positioned at the lower flanged portion 7 of the burner cylinder 6 is caused to be released from the bottom part of the valve housing member 1, and accordingly, the passageways 5, provided in the lower part of the valve housing member 1, are opened.
At thi point, the gaseous fuel in the fuel container a is discharged through the passageways 5, resilient absorbent packing member 2, the annular chamber 14, the lateral passage 11, the cylindrical bore 16.
Means for regulating the quantity of the discharging gas are provided by an adjustment which can be effected by turning the adjusting wheel 4, so that the quantity of the gaseous fuel passed through the resilient absorbent packing member 2 is properly controlled depending upon the pressure imparted to the absorbent packing member 2.
Now, if the lighting operation is released, the burner cylinder 6 restores the normal position by being pressed upwardly by the spring 9, so that the passageways 5 are closed again by the packing member 8.
Now, it will be described, referring to FIG. 3, how the present device operates as a fuel injection valve, in accordance with the present invention.
An injecting passage 21 is axially provided in an injection pipe 20 and an annular ring 22 is fitted on the top end of the injection pipe 20 so as to clamp the outer circumference of the top end of the burner cylinder 6.
If the injection passage 21 connected to the top end of the burner cylinder 6 is pressed downwardly until the injection pipe 20 reaches the plate 19, the annular packing 8 is separated from the valve housing member 1, accordingly, the opening of the lateral passage 11 provided on the side wall of the burner cylinder 6 is moved down through the annular ring 13, resulting in a position of the lateral passage 11, where it intercommunicates with the fuel container a.
Since a space b between the upper circumference of the burner cylinder 6 and the annular member 12 and another space c between the bottom surface of the plate 17 and the upper surface of the adjusting wheel 4 were respec-. tively formed, the fuel gas is supplied into the container through the injection passage 21, the cylindrical bore 10, lateral passage 11 and after the gas filling is terminated any excess gas is caused to discharge through the cylindrical passageways 5, the resilient absorbent packing member 2, the annular space 14, space 1), space 0. Due to the exhaustion of the gaseous air discharged from the fuel container a, the user can easily find that the filling of the fuel has been now terminated,
Upon release of the gas filling tank from the lighter, the communication between the fuel container a and atmospheric air is then completely intercepted by the packing '8 which closes the passage 5, and the normal position is restored by the spring 9.
While I have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claims.
What I claim is:
1. A burner construction comprising a valve housing member having at least one inner setoff portion and adapted to be received on a fuel container,
a resilient packing member disposed on said inner setoif portion of said valve housing member,
a hollow cylindrical member threadably received in the and by the upper portion of said valve housing member.
said valve housing member having in its lower portion a plurality of axially disposed passageways,
a burner cylinder, having an outer diameter smaller than the inner diameter of said hollow cylindrical member and of said lower portion of said valve housing member, respectively, and including a. flange at its lower part extending axially through said hollow cylindrical member and through said lower portion of said valve housing member,
an annular packing member disposed on the outer side of said flange of said burner cylinder and engaging the bottom face of said lower portion of said valve housing member and thereby closing the inner ends of said passageways in the inoperative position of said burner construction,
spring means engaging the bottom face of said flange of said burner cylinder and urging the latter into its uppermost position,
said burner cylinder having an axial bore terminating short of its inner face and a radial bore close to and communicating with the inner end of said axial bore a first sealing ring disposed between said burner cylinder and said hollow cylindrical member, a second sealing ring disposed between said burner cylinder and said lower portion of said valve housing 5 member,
said burner cylinder jointly with said hollow cylindrical member and said valve housing member defining an annular chamber between said sealing rings, a third sealing ring disposed between said valve housing member and said hollow cylindrical member, the upper portion of said burner cylinder having an outer diameter smaller than that of the lower portion thereof, control means associated with said burner cylinder for axial movement of the latter, so that upon slight axial downward movement of said burner cylinder, said annular packing member is removed from the inner end of said passageways and provide a discharge path through said passageways, said resilient packing member, said annular chamber, said radial bore and said axial bore of said burner cylinder, and upon further axial downward movement of the latter until said radial bore has passed said third sealing ring, provides an injection path through said cylindrical bore and said radial bore of said burner cylinder into a fuel container. 2. The burner construction, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said hollow cylindrical member includes a wheel for manual adjustment of said hollow cylindrical member relative to the lower portion of said valve housing member, in order to control the flow of the fuel through said resilient packing member. 3. The burner construction, as set forth in claim ll, wherein said control means associated with said burner cylinder for axial movement of the latter comprises a control plate removably secured to the upper portion of said burner cylinder and manually operated for axial 4O displacement of said burner cylinder.

Claims (1)

1. A BURNER CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING A VALVE HOUSING MEMBER HAVING AT LEAST ONE INNER SETOFF PORTION AND ADAPTED TO BE RECEIVED ON A FUEL CONTAINER, A RESILIENT PACKING MEMBER DISPOSED ON SAID INNER SETOFF PORTION OF SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER, A HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL MEMBER THREADABLY RECEIVED IN THE AND BY UPPER PORTION OF SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER, SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER HAVING IN ITS LOWER PORTION A PLURALITY OF AXIALLY DISPOSED PASSAGEWAYS, A BURNER CYLINDER, HAVING AN OUTER DIAMETER SMALLER THAN THE INNER DIAMETER OF SAID HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL MEMBER AND OF SAID LOWER PORTION OF SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER, RESPECTIVELY, AND INCLUDING A FLANGE AT ITS LOWER PART EXTENDING AXIALLY THROUGH SAID HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL MEMBER AND THROUGH SAID LOWER PORTION OF SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER, AN ANNULAR PACKING MEMBER DISPOSED ON THE OUTER SIDE OF SAID FLANGE OF SAID BURNER CLYINDER AND ENGAGING THE BOTTOM FACE OF SAID LOWER PORTION OF SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER AND THEREBY CLOSING THE INNER ENDS OF SAID PASSAGEWAYS IN THE INOPERATIVE POSITION OF SAID BURNER CONSTRUCTION, SPRING MEANS ENGAGING THE BOTTOM FACE OF SAID FLANGE OF SAID BURNER CYLINDER AND URGING THE LATTER INTO ITS UPPERMOST POSITION, SAID BURNER CYLINDER HAVING AN AXIAL BORE TERMINATING SHORT OF ITS INNER FACE AND A RADIAL BORE CLOSE TO AND COMMUNICATING WITH THE INNER END OF SAID AXIAL BORE A FIRST SEALING RING DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID BURNER CYLINDER AND SAID HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL MEMBER, A SECOND SEALING RING DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID BURNER CYLINDER AND SAID LOWER PORTION OF SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER, SAID BURNER CYLINDER JOINTLY WITH SAID HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL MEMBER AND SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER DEFINING AN ANNULAR CHAMBER BETWEEN SAID SEALING RINGS, A THIRD SEALING RING DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID VALVE HOUSING MEMBER AND SAID HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL MEMBER, THE UPPER PORTION OF SAID BURNER CYLINDER HAVING AN OUTER DIAMETER SMALLER THAN THAT OF THE LOWER PORTION THEREOF, CONTROL MEANS ASSOCIATED WITH SAID BURNER CYLINDER FOR AXIAL MOVEMENT OF THE LATTER, SO THAT UPON SLIGHT AXIAL DOWNWARD MOVEMENT OF SAID BURNER CYLINDER, SAID ANNULAR PACKING MEMBER IS REMOVED FROM THE INNER END OF SAID PASSAGEWAYS AND PROVIDE A DISCHARGE PATH THROUGH SAID PASSAGEWAYS, SAID RESILIENT PACKING MEMBER, SAID ANNULAR CHAMBER, SAID RADIAL BORE AND SAID AXIAL DOWNWARD MOVECYLINDER, AND UPON FURTHER AXIAL DOWNWARD MOVEMENT OF THE LATTER UNTIL SAID RADIAL BORE HAS PASSED SAID THIRD SEALING RING, PROVIDES AN INJECTIN PATH THROUGH SAID CYLINDRICAL BORE AND SAID RADIAL BORE OF SAID BURNER CYLINDER INTO A FUEL CONTAINER.
