- the present invention relates to packaging forming a barrier against water vapor based on mixtures of polystyrene and polypropylene.
- polystyrene is an unusable material for constituting the packaging of these food products since its permeability to water vapor is 13 g per 100 microns thick and per square meter (standard measurement).
- Polypropylene is a usable material because its permeability is 0.5 g per 100 microns thick and per square meter; but we also know that this polypropylene has serious drawbacks in its implementation so that its use for producing packaging of this type has not been imposed.
- the mixtures described in patent No. 76/20958 and in particular the mixtures containing approximately 45 to 60% by weight of polypropylene, 45 to 30% by weight of polystyrene and approximately 10% by weight of triblock polybutadiene have been found to be materials which, surprisingly, have a sufficiently low permeability to water vapor so that they can be used in protective packaging.
- This permeability is in fact 1.5 g per 100 microns thick and per square meter whereas we should have expected, taking into account the composition of this mixture, a permeability of around 6 to 7 g for 100 microns thick and per square meter.
