Description

The invention relates to a device and a method for applying adhesive, in particular for gluing sheet stack backs, consisting of an application roller immersed in an adhesive pool with at least one doctor blade that can be set against the circumference of the application roller and is located in the direction of advance of the sheet stack in front of its application point.

In general, in known systems, the sheet stack is clamped in a holder and guided along a linear or curved path. During this movement, the back of the stack of sheets to be glued slides over a rotating applicator roller that dips part of its circumference into an adhesive basin. In order to meter the coating thickness of the adhesive on the circumference of the application roller, wiping devices, such as. B. squeegee used, which are adjustable against the scope of the applicator roller.

It has been found that a better application of the adhesive on the back of the sheet stack occurs when the application roller rotates in the opposite direction to the feed of the sheet stack. When the sheet stack approaches the roller and runs onto it, an inevitable bead of adhesive is formed on the leading edge of the sheet stack, which tends to drip and also wets the lower part of the front face of the sheet stack in question. This disadvantageous effect has hitherto been countered by either lifting the binding material onto the application roller at the moment of emergence or by briefly lowering the gluing unit (DE-A-22 62 138). However, this method requires a flexible suspension of the glue unit with additional cushioning or an alternative option for the tensioning station.

The adjustment elements required for this require a precise adjustment, with which the adjustment to the adhesive thickness to be applied must also take place.

The object of the invention is to develop an adhesive application device with an application roller driven in the optimum direction of rotation, with the aid of which it is possible to bring about a uniform and intensive coating of the workpiece to be machined, without complicated and costly adjustment measures being necessary for this. The object of the invention is not only directed to the gluing of sheet stacks but can also be directed to the coating of other workpieces, also with other liquid or pasty substances.

The invention is characterized by a reversible direction of rotation drive for the applicator roller and by the arrangement of an additional adhesive metering container along the circumferential roller section adjacent to the applicator roller on the applicator roller, viewed in the direction of advance of the sheet stack, within the adhesive basin, the metering container being two gap-like relative to the jacket of the applicator roller Forms passages, of which the upper gap facing the workpiece to be glued is wider than the lower. The edges of the metering container facing the application roller are preferably designed as doctor blades or similar scraping devices.

If one speaks of “adhesive” in this context, this only concerns the preferred exemplary embodiment of the invention, without this being intended to mean a restriction with regard to the use of other liquid or pasty substances.

The reversible drive for the applicator roller first ensures that the optimal direction of rotation can be set for the coating of the workpiece, while the reverse direction of rotation can be used for the start of gluing. This means that the thickening of the coating to be found in the known method no longer occurs on the leading side of the workpiece. In order to achieve this, the method for applying adhesive to a sheet stack back with a device according to the invention teaches that the application roller is first driven in a direction of rotation in the same direction as the feed of the sheet stack until the leading edge of the sheet stack has reached the application position, whereupon the direction of rotation the application roller is reversed. It is advisable here if the drive of the application roller is controlled by switches which can be actuated by the leading and trailing edges of the sheet stack or their tensioning devices.

With this definition of the invention, too, the term “stack of sheets can be replaced by“ workpiece, provided that other objects also need to avoid thickening of the coating on the leading edge of the workpiece.

The arrangement of a dosing container on the discharge side of the application roller, which is also provided according to the invention, has the purpose of continuously carrying out the required, uniform amount of coating substance on the workpiece to be coated, even if the application roller is reversed in its direction of rotation according to the invention. Characterized in that the application roller rotates in the same direction with the feed of the workpiece to be coated before the coating work is started, because of the differently dimensioned gaps between the edges of the metering container facing the application roller and the application roller, the metering container is filled, so that more substance is conveyed into the metering container is going to get out of it. With this direction of rotation the leading area of the workpiece will be layers. Immediately afterwards, the direction of rotation of the application roller is reversed, which means that the substance is now removed from the dosing container and transferred intensively to the workpiece when the application roller rotates in the opposite direction to the feed direction. If, according to the invention, the volume of the dosing container is several times larger than the maximum amount of adhesive required for a workpiece, then a uniform but also adequate coating of the workpiece is achieved.

So that the filling and emptying process of the dosing container can be carried out in a controlled manner, it is advisable to provide an overflow opening in the dosing container through which the substance can escape when the dosing container is filled when its capacity is exhausted.

In the context of a further exemplary embodiment of the invention it is provided that the distance of the doctor blade arranged on the feed side of the application roller to the application roller is smaller than the upper gap width, but larger than the lower gap width between the metering container and the application roller. This squeegee prevents an excessive amount of substance from being carried along by the application roller if it rotates in the same direction as the workpiece is fed before the application work begins. This doctor blade can, for example, also be designed as a cylindrical, stationary rod and penetrate the adhesive basin. Of course, this doctor blade can also be arranged to be adjustable.

Finally, the invention provides in a further exemplary embodiment that the upper doctor blade of the metering container is arranged above the axis of the application roller and the normal adhesive level in the adhesive tank. The static pressure of the medium present in the adhesive tank thus has practically no influence on the substance present in the dosing container. On the other hand, the substance present in the dosing container is located in its mirror much closer to the workpiece to be coated, so that the risk of evaporation of the solvent possibly present in the substance is also substantially reduced in this way.

The invention is shown schematically in the drawing using an exemplary embodiment. Show it :
  • FIG. 1 shows a longitudinal section through an adhesive application device for sheet stacks before the start of the coating,
  • 2 shows a longitudinal section according to FIG. 1 in one position during the coating and
  • 3 shows a plan view of the arrangement according to FIGS. 1 and 2.

The embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2 shows the gluing of a sheet stack 14, which is clamped in the usual way and can be moved past a rotatably arranged application roller 3. This application roller 3 is located in an adhesive tank 1 and is intended to transfer the adhesive removed from the tank 1 to the sheet edges of the sheet stack 14.

On the outlet side of the application roller 3 there is a metering container 2 which, with the walls 7 (see FIG. 3), engages around the front of the application roller 3 and seals the metering container 2 there from the adhesive tank 1. With its upper and lower wall, the dosing container 2 extends close to the application roller 3. In the exemplary embodiment of the invention, these upper and lower walls are designed as doctor blades 5 and 6. The doctor blade 5 has a larger gap 11 than the doctor blade 6 with the gap 10 with respect to the application roller 3.

On the inlet side, in front of the application roller 3, there is a further doctor blade 4 which, compared to the application roller 3, defines a gap 9 which is smaller than the gap 11 but larger than the gap 10.

In the exemplary embodiment, the inner surface of the doctor blade 5 is located above the axis of the applicator roller 3 and thus above the normal level inside the adhesive tank 1. In the wall of the metering container 2, an overflow opening 8 is preferably provided in the upper region, through which the one located in the metering container 2 Substance can get back into the adhesive pool 1.

The application roller 3 is provided with a drive, not shown, reversible in the direction of rotation. This drive can be reversed by means of special switches which can be actuated in particular by the leading and trailing edges of the workpiece 14.

The operation of the arrangement according to the invention is as follows: In the position according to FIG. 1, in which a workpiece 14 is still at a distance from the application roller 3, the application roller 3 rotates in the same direction as the. Feed direction of the workpiece 14, which is indicated by the direction of rotation arrow 12. In this direction of rotation, the applicator roller 3 takes the adhesive (or another substance) located in the adhesive basin 1 in a counterclockwise direction, the doctor blade 4, which according to the exemplary embodiment can also be designed as a cylindrical rod, only lets through a quantity of substance corresponding to the gap 9. The substance entrained on the circumference of the application roller 3 passes through the gap 11 into the metering container 2, where it is essentially retained because the gap 10 of the doctor blade 6 has a smaller width than the gap 11 of the doctor blade 5. If, in this direction of rotation 12 of the applicator roller 3, there is an excess delivery quantity for the metering container 2, the substance can escape again into the adhesive tank 1 through the overflow opening 8.

As soon as the workpiece 14 with the front edge viewed in the direction of travel has exceeded the highest point (application position) of the application roller 3, a switch is made as a function of the leading edge of the workpiece 14, not shown tion of the direction of rotation of the application roller 3, so that it now rotates in the direction of arrow 12 according to FIG. 2. In this direction of rotation of the application roller 3, the substance to be applied is now removed from the metering container 2, which is continuously emptied because the gap 10 is smaller than the gap 11. However, since the volume of the metering container 2 is substantially larger than the amount of substance to be applied to the individual workpiece 14, there can be no danger. It is only essential that the application roller 3 rotates in the predominant area in opposite direction to the feed direction of the workpiece 14 during the application of the substance, whereby a more intensive coating takes place. However, since the application roller 3 rotates the other way round before reaching the workpiece 14 (see FIG. 1), the application of a particularly large amount at the starting area of the workpiece is avoided.
