Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a device for establishing an electrical connection between a conductive cable covered with an insulating sheath and a second conductor, of the type comprising means capable of perforating the insulating sheath of the cable under the action of a threaded clamping member.
  • a control head which is intended to separate from the threaded clamping member, at the level of a groove, under the action of a tightening torque corresponding to the tightening torque necessary for the means of perforation completely pass through the insulating sheath, in order to ensure good electrical contact between the cable and the second conductor, and an insulating casing covering the perforation means and the threaded clamping member.
  • Document GB-A-1 465 907 describes a connection device of this type which has the disadvantage of not allowing, after separation of the control head, a subsequent tightening or dismantling of the threaded member.
  • the insulating housing of this device which is not removable, also requires a great deal of time and skill for its installation which is normally ensured after the electrical connection between the conductors has been made, but which could be before separation of the control head, and therefore when the electrical connection is not perfectly guaranteed.
  • Document GB-A-1 402 280 describes an electrical connection device provided with a control head intended to break by shearing, but which can no longer be used, after it has broken, to act on the connection made between the electrical conductors . It is true that this device is provided with a cover. The latter, which is molded on site after the head has broken, cannot however be removed after it has been poured and consequently prohibits any subsequent intervention on the connection.
  • the present invention proposes to overcome the drawbacks of the electrical connection devices of the prior art and, to do this, it relates to a connection device of the aforementioned type which is characterized in that the groove separates the control head in two coaxial elements, one allowing the application of the tightening torque while the other authorizes disassembly or subsequent tightening; and in that the insulating casing comprises a chimney outside of which the control head projects when it is not broken, as well as a removable closing cover adaptable on the chimney only after the breaking of the control head at level of the groove, this cover being connected to the housing by a flexible rod.
  • the operator can easily proceed, after rupture of the control head at the level of the groove, to a subsequent tightening or disassembly of the connection device. Furthermore, it can close the cover, to restore the electrical insulation, only after having broken the control head, and therefore only when the perforation means have completely passed through the insulating sheath of the cable. This condition naturally helps to guarantee the quality of the connection when the operator has to work in difficult conditions, for example in the dark or at the end of a pole, where he cannot be aware of the break in trying to put the hood in place.
  • the fact that the cover is removable allows easy access, with an appropriate tool, to the element allowing subsequent disassembly or tightening.
  • the cover is integral with the insulating housing, it is always available to the operator who does not have to obtain it separately. It is also always perfectly suited to the dimensions of the chimney which can therefore be hermetically closed after the head has broken.
  • the groove receives a stop protruding from the side walls of the two elements of the control head.
  • This retainer prohibits possible simultaneous tightening of the two elements of the control head which would have the effect of not achieving the aim sought by the present invention.
  • the stopper is constituted by a plastic washer.
  • the two elements of the control head also have a hexagonal section.
  • FIG. 1 shows the connection device according to the invention enclosing a cable A.
  • This device consists of a part 1a constituted, in a manner known per se, by a metal socket (not visible) to which can be connected the end of any line of bypass, short circuit or ground.
  • An insulating cap 2 made of rubber or any other insulating material, surrounds the part 1a of the connector. This cap is provided at its lower end with an opening which can be closed by a plug 3 of insulating material and which allows an operator to reach the socket.
  • the connection device also comprises a part 1b (visible in FIGS. 1 and 2) constituted by a metal part 4 having the shape of a C, the two branches 4a and 4b of which are parallel and substantially of the same thickness face each other and are connected laterally by a plate 4c of substantially the same thickness and slightly curved.
  • the metal part 4 is mechanically and electrically connected to the sleeve of the part 1a.
  • a toothed jaw 5a is integral with the branch 4b while the branch 4a is pierced with a threaded bore intended to receive the body of a threaded member 6 such as a screw.
  • a toothed movable jaw 5b and facing the previous one is integral with the lower end of the threaded member which thus controls its movement.
  • the threaded clamping member is provided with a control head 7 separated into two coaxial elements 7a and 7b by a groove 8.
  • the two elements 7a and 7b of the control head are hexagonal and of the same dimension. But it is obvious that a different shape can be envisaged as long as a tightening tool corresponds to it.
  • two elements of different dimensions can be provided for the control head.
  • the groove forms a rupture zone at the level of which the control head is intended to break under the effect of a predetermined tightening torque, applied to its external element 7a. The latter then detaches from the inner element 7b, thereby shortening the height of the threaded clamping member. The depth of the groove will be calculated so that, depending on the material of the threaded clamping member, the break occurs for the predetermined tightening torque.
  • the groove receives, over its entire circumference, a retainer 9 which may for example be a plastic washer.
  • a retainer 9 which may for example be a plastic washer.
  • On part 1b of the connector fits a removable housing 10 made of insulating material (visible in Figures 2 and 3).
  • This insulating box follows the shape of part 1b of the connector. It is constituted towards its base by a skirt 10a which opens at the level of the slot 11 to come and grip the carrying cable.
  • the skirt closes around the carrying cable thanks to two lugs 12 which fit by pressing into two holes 13 facing them.
  • the carrying cable then leaves the two sides of the housing 10 through two orifices 14 formed by the bringing together of the two parts of the skirt 10a.
  • the insulating housing On its upper part, the insulating housing is provided with a chimney 15 serving as a housing for the control head of the threaded member of the connector.
  • This chimney is of a height such that when the casing is fitted on the connector, the threaded clamping member clearly protrudes from the edge of the chimney inlet before its control head is broken and comes just at the level or a little below the edge of the chimney entrance after his head was broken.
  • a cover 16 of cylindrical shape connected to the housing by a flexible rod 17, is intended to come to fit on the chimney to close it hermetically. Its height is calculated so that when it closes the chimney, its bottom 16a comes into contact with the edges of the entrance to the chimney. Consequently, the cover can not fully fit on the chimney until the control head is broken.
  • the device as described above can be used in the following manner.
  • the insulated carrying cable A is brought between the jaws 5a and 5b of the connector 1 provided with its insulating housing 10 which opens at the level of the slot 11.
  • the jaws 5a and ⁇ .5b are brought together beforehand to hold the cable without however perforate its insulating sheath.
  • the insulating housing 10 is closed around the cable by bringing the two parts of its skirt together. The closure is done by a simple pressure on the lugs 12 which are embedded in the corresponding holes 13.
  • the external element 7a of the control head 7 of the threaded clamping member is then clamped using an appropriate clamping tool which comes into contact with the retainer 9.
  • the clamping tool does not simultaneously engage on the internal element 7b of the control head.
  • the simultaneous tightening of the two elements of the control head would have the effect of not fully applying the predetermined tightening torque to the external element of the control head.
  • the tightening check would then be distorted.
  • the control head 7 breaks at the level of the groove 8. It is then certain that good electrical contact is made. made between the connector and the conductive part of the carrier cable.
  • the stopper 9 which was held between the two elements of the control head is eliminated after the latter has broken. We can therefore later use the inner element 7b of the control head to optionally disassemble or tighten the connector. Once the control head has been broken, it no longer protrudes from the chimney 15, and the cover 16 can be completely fitted onto the insulating housing 10.
  • connection device finds its main application in short-circuiting or grounding of the cables isolated from the electrical energy distribution networks.
  • it can obviously be used for all types of electrical connections with insulation perforation, for example for connections from one network to another network or for subscriber connection connections.
  • the invention can be provided with several perforation means on the connector side making it possible to derive several insulated carrying cables.
