Definitions
- MICROPOROUS MATERIAL AND A HEAT-SEALABLE BAG PREPARED THEREOF MICROPOROUS MATERIAL AND A HEAT-SEALABLE BAG PREPARED THEREOF.
- the present invention relates to a microporous material and a heat-sealable bag prepared thereof, which bag is especially suitable for heat sterilization and storage in a sterile condition of articles such as surgical instruments and similar.
- bags for sterilization and storage in a sterile condition of e.g. surgical instruments and similar which bags consist of two usually rectangular plane sheets, one of which consists of a heat-sealable, gas impenetrable transparent material which makes it possible to see the object packed in the bag, the other one consisting of a microporous paper.
- the both sheets have essentially the same shape and are located one above the other and heat-sealing is made along three edges to the formation of a bag.
- the instrument or the object to be sterilized and stored in a sterile condition in the bag is introduced therein, whereupon the fourth edge is heat-sealed.
- the finished package with its contents is sterilized with heat in a conventional manner. During the sterilization air enclosed in the package can escape through the pores in the paper side of the bag.
- the pore size of the paper is such that air borne microorganisms cannot pass through the pores which would cause a loss of the sterility.
- the paper used must have a pore size which is lesser than the size of prevalent microorganisms, viz. lesser than about 30 ⁇ m and suitably within the range 10 - 20 ⁇ m, preferably about 12 ⁇ m. It is obvious that the values of the pore size must be valid for all pores. It is thus not possible to tolerate an average pore size with the values given, viz. the occurrence of e.g. 10% pores with a size up to 100 ⁇ m.
- a package of the type described above containing sterile articles is opened by tearing away material corners which located outsides of a heat-sealed edge.
- the sealing is broken in the paper material and this will cause parts of the surface layer of the paper to follow the heat-sealed transparent material. This will unavoidably cause the liberation of a great number of paper fibres which is regarded to be very, unsuitable and unacceptable since the fibres can enter into the tissues and act disturbing in several contexts.
- a third purpose with the invention is thus to achieve a coating on the paper which causes that no paper fibres are liberated when the sterile package or bag is opened.
- a for the purpose conventional material in the sheet form which has an average pore size within the range 20 - 100 ⁇ m is coated on the one side with a viscous suspension of a micronized powderous material such as talcum in water admixed with a suitable amount of a thickening agent such as a cellulose derivative, e.g. carboxy methyl cellulose.
- the thickening agent has two functions, viz. partly it keeps the powderous material in suspension during the application and partly it acts as a binder for the powder after drying. Good-results have been obtained-with a suspension consisting of 2000 g of talcum of commercial quality, 200 g of "MODO-COLL®” and 5000 g of water.
- the prepared suspension is suitably applied on the one side of the paper web in a conventional manner in a rolling mill provided with a doctor blade to the formation of a thin layer on the paper which subsequently is dried in a heated tunnel. It has been found that paper which has been surface-treated in the said manner obtains a unitary pore size of about 12 ⁇ m.
- the untreated paper had an average pore size of 26 ⁇ m with numerous pores with a larger size.
- thickening agent or binding agent in the suspension it is possible to use numerous different materials, viz. gelling agents or commonly used types such as different cellulose derivatives, e.g. carboxy alkyl cellulose, but also other types such as gums can be used, e.g. gummmi arabicum, in combination with a suitable minor amount of a softening agent such as glycerol.
- gelling agents or commonly used types such as different cellulose derivatives, e.g. carboxy alkyl cellulose, but also other types such as gums can be used, e.g. gummmi arabicum, in combination with a suitable minor amount of a softening agent such as glycerol.
- a binding agent and a suspending agent of a certain material is easily determined by practical experiments.
- the above-mentioned commercial product "M0D0-C0LL®" has been found to be well suitable.
- the preferred micronized powderous material is talcum, but also other materials such as chalk, dolomite, barium sulphate and different types of clay, etc. can be used as well as mixtures thereof.
- the material shall, of course, be micronized in the sufficient degree. It has been found that a suitable particle size distribution is about 80 - 90% of 40 - 100 ⁇ m and about 10% within the range 70 - 40 ⁇ m.
- the transparent plastic material used for the preparation of a heat-sealable bag according to the invention consists suitably of a commercially available plastic foil laminate comprising two layers, viz. one layer of polypropylene and a second layer of polyester material.
- the polypropylene has a lower melting temperature and is facing the paper side during the lamination.
- the polyester layer has a better heat resistance and is required to give mechanical rigidity to the transparent layer during the heat-sealing.
- the sterile packages prepared according to the invention do not cause fibre-formation when the sealing is opened. Further, the tearing force required for opening is easily controllable and more unitary over the whole sealed area.
- micronized material consists of a mixture of about 75% of talcum and about 25% of chalk, calculated on the weight.
- Bags according to the invention can, as mentioned above, be used for heat sterilization of all kinds of goods, especially surgical instruments and other articles.
- the manufacture of the paper with a controlled pore size and the bags per se is made in a manner known per se with the use of commonly available apparatus.
