Definitions
- This invention is concerned with the manufacture of a decorative fabric which may be used for making curtains, drapes, wall covering or for covering articles of furniture.
- a decorative fabric has been made having a plain or self-coloured background onto which "textured yarns" as hereinafter defined of same or different colours have been secured in various coloured or pattern arrangements lengthwise or transverse of the fabric. Due to the yarns being individually secured, this decorative fabric is labour-intensive to make, and therefore costly relative to other decorative fabrics.
- a "textured yarn” is defined as a yarn that has been processed to introduce durable fine distortions and dimensional irregularities along the length of the fibres or filaments.
- the fabric comprises a fleece support panel having first and second surfaces and stitching thread stitch-bonding the fleece in such a manner that parallel chains of stitch loops appear in the second surface.
- Similar machines are described in FR-A-1.407.643 and 1.467.783 which in addition are provided with guide means for feeding parallel threads along said first surface on which they are then fixed by a zig-zag-stitch-bonding.
- the decorative fabric according to the invention is characterized in that the fabric also comprises a plurality of parallel "textured yarn" (as hereinbefore defined) extending linearly along said first surface and anchored a said first surface by said stitching thread and in that said stitching thread is applied in such a manner that there is no interconnection between the parallel chains of stitch loops and that separate lines of stitches on said first surface anchor said textured yarns on said first surface.
- the Maliwatt stitch-bonding machine typically comprises supply means providing a plurality of stitching threads, a stitch-bonding zone including a row of parallel needles movable axially to and fro, a parallel row of sinkers positioned adjacent the path of movement of the needles, a parallel row of stitching thread guide means facing the needles effecting a lapping movement relative to the needles so as to wrap individual ones of said stitching threads about individual ones of said needles and to cooperate with the needles and the sinkers to form stitches, means for guiding a fleece through the stitch-bonding zone between the row of needles and the row of stitching thread guides so that the fleece is stitch-bonded by the stitching threads, and means for guiding the stitch-bonded fleece from the stitch-bonding zone.
- the machine also comprises means for linearly guiding a plurality of "textured yarns" (as hereinbefore defined) together into contact with the fleece for movement with the fleece through the stitch-bonding zone so that the textured yarns extend linearly along the surface of the fleece and are attached thereto by the stitching threads to produce a decorative fabric for feeding via the means for guiding the stitch-bonded fleece from the stitch-bonding zone, the means for guiding the plurality of textured yarns including a member having a plurality of bores through which the yarns pass with each bore having a yarn exit opening in one end with the yarn exit openings being positioned in a line immediately upstream of the stitch-bonding zone.
- the drawing shows a sloping fleece feeding sheet 1 terminating at knocking-over sinkers 2.
- a vertical fleece retaining sheet 3 has a lower edge which forms a first throat with the fleece feeding sheet 1.
- Spaced below and on the same side of the throat as the fleece retaining sheet 1 is a guide bar 4.
- stitching-thread guides 5 mounted on a thread guide bar (not shown).
- the thread guides 5 are mounted compound needles comprising hooks 6 and hook-closing tongues 7, the hooks 6 and the tongues being mounted on corresponding bars.
- a member 16 Downstream at the first throat a member 16 forms a second throat with the sinkers 2.
- a bar 10 having a longitudinal row of holes 11 through which individual "textured yarns" 12 (as hereinbefore defined) are threaded, the yarns 12 being fed from bobbins 13 via tensioning devices (not shown).
- the yarn entry openings are arranged so that alternative openings are in one line and the remaining openings are in the other line, the bores from the openings lying in two planes meeting above the single line of exit openings wherefrom the yarns 12 emerge just above the level where the yarns 12 are anchored onto the one surface of the fleece, each yarn 12 emerging generally between two adjacent needles.
- a fleece 8 is fed down the fleece feeding sheet 1 into the throat and is pulled through the throat by means (not shown).
- the yarns 12 are fed from the individual bobbins 13, through the tensioning devices and the individual holes 11 in the bar 10 and through the individual bores in the member 16, the tension in the yarns 12 being derived from being anchored onto one surface of the fleece as will be later described.
- the fleece 8 is fed intermittently and during the time the fleece is stationary the open hooks 6 of the needles penetrate the fleece between the sinkers 2 and stitching threads 15 are wrapped around the open hooks by lapping movement of the guides 5.
- the tongues 7 are then extended to close the hooks 6 and thus trap the threads 1 therein.
- the closed hooks 6 are then retracted so as to pull the trapped thread 15 through old loops which are cast-off the needles at the sinkers 2.
- the fleece 8 is then moved again thereafter the open hooks 6 are extended through the fleece so that the thread 15 formerly trapped in the hook forms new loops on the shanks of the needles.
- the hooks are again wrapped with threads 15.
- the hooks 6 are closed again by the tongues 7 and the trapped threads 15 are pulled through the previously formed loops on the shanks of the needles.
- the fleece may be stitch-bonded not only by the threads 15 but also by its own fibres.
- the lapping movement used in the stitch-bonding may be such that each guide 5 cooperates with only one needle so as to produce on the other surface of the fleece 8 parallel chains of stitches and on the one surface of the fleece 8 separate parallel lines of stitches at spacings determined by the spacing between the needles. Due to the distortions and the dimensional irregularities in the yarns 12 the parallel lines of stitches anchor the yarns 12 to the fleece 8 in a manner producing bulges in the anchored yarns 12 irregularly interspersed with localised constrictions therein at the anchoring points to produce a pleasing surface appearance of the fabric.
- the yarns 12 may be arranged individually or in groups of different colours and/or textures to achieve difficult decorative patterns on the one surface of the stitch-bonded fleece.
