A process for the reproduction of oil painting and the like, having a relief surface, using a relief mold taken from the original and a thermoplastic foil, imprinted with a color picture corresponding to the original, the foil being molded while being heated and which includes placing the foil upon the relief mold in a fitting alignment and heating the foil essentially homogeneously to its liquefying temperature across its entire surface.

Description

The invention relates to a method according to the preamble of patent claim 1.

For the reproduction of oil paintings, for example, copying is the first option. However, good copies require a lot of expertise and a lot of time, so that they are expensive and cannot meet the increasing demand with the home decor. On the other hand, the multicolor art print developed to high fidelity in color and resolution results in inexpensive replicas, but this suffers from the disadvantage that the relief-like surface structure of the original is missing, which is also an expression of the artist in an oil painting or similar work of art and even by one Layperson is recognized as such.

To solve this problem, DE-A-494894, FR-A-1521466, DE-A-2019699 and DE-A-2 352 966 have specified methods in which a true-to-original multicolor print on the image side is used transparent layer of gelatin or plastic is applied, which receives the relief design of the original surface by means of a shape removed from the original before or after application. Thus, the relief-like surface design on the transparent layer is imitated, but does not give the same impression as in the original, since it is not formed by the color as in the original, so that the effect of the surface formed by the transparent layer is extremely strong from the viewing angle dependent on lighting and the like.

These shortcomings are eliminated in methods according to FR-A-1 493 516 and FR-A-1 548 337, from which the preamble of claim 1 is based. According to FR-A-1 493 516, the relief shape is provided with air through holes. The color image film, over which a thick polystyrene film is attached, is then placed over the relief shape with a registration. The thick polystyrene film is heated to the softening temperature of the color picture film. Then, by means of negative pressure below the relief mold and / or excess pressure above the polystyrene film, the latter is pressed together with the color picture film into the depressions of the relief mold. This gives the color picture film the surface shape of the original after it has hardened again. The process according to FR-A-1 548 337 corresponds to this known process with the exception that the color picture film is heated by irradiation with infrared light instead of contact heating by means of a polystyrene film and the formation is carried out solely by negative pressure below the relief mold. The resulting relief surface of the color image film is an improvement over the transparent relief surface layers obtained in the aforementioned methods. In both methods, however, heat inevitably acts on the color image film over a relatively long period of time, which leads to a more or less strong change in the naturally temperature-sensitive printing inks leads. The reason for this is that mainly the polystyrene film but also the color picture film itself, although the latter is relatively thin, has a non-negligible heat capacity, it taking a certain time until the heat transferred to the unprinted side of the color picture film has the printed page on the required softening temperature is provided. After that, it takes a certain time until the composite structure made of polystyrene film and color picture film, which has a significantly greater heat capacity than the color picture film alone, has cooled down again to harmless temperatures.

From DE-A-2 352 966 a reproduction method of oil paintings has become known, in which heating is carried out dielectrically and a dielectric meltable film is provided for this purpose. Apart from the fact that here no support layer made of fabric material is used and thus the problem of heat overheating cannot occur at all, the reproduction achievable by this known method, in which only a transparent film layer with a relief-like surface design is applied to a printed image, The requirements for a lifelike imitation, for example of old masters, do not meet.

The use of a reinforcing layer made of canvas-like fabric is known from FR-A-1 311 733 and from GB-A-782 703.

However, the use of this known method according to the patents just cited likewise leads to reproductions, the quality and quality of which are not comparable with reproductions which have been produced in accordance with the method according to the invention.

First of all, it should be noted that the reproduction process known from the British patent specification is extremely complex. In this process, an intermediate image carrier with a metachromatic paper with an adhesive layer and a lacquer layer applied thereon is first required, this intermediate image carrier with the paper and the adhesive layer having to be washed down again after the printing process. Already from these latter two features it can be seen that the quality of the reproductions must suffer considerably since the latter two layers of paper and adhesive are provided between the image film and the relief form during the printing process. In addition, this process includes several other layers of paint and adhesive layers necessary for the proper execution of the procedure. In this extremely complex known method, moreover, the connection of the fabric layer to the lacquer and ink carrier layers is not as strong and perfect as it would be desirable to be. Above all, however, the long and necessary exposure to heat with heat and pressure plates leads to a disadvantageous impairment of the reproduction quality, since in particular the colors of the color printing can be impaired.

The invention has for its object to provide an improved method compared to the prior art, in which the effects of harmful high temperatures on the color image film are significantly reduced. This is achieved by the characterizing features of claim 1.

Dielectric heating simultaneously heats the color picture film over its entire thickness and brings it to the required softening temperature. Since only the thin coating, but not the canvas-like fabric of the reinforcement layer, is dielectrically heated, the composite structure made of the thin coating of the reinforcement layer and the color picture film has a low thermal capacity and cools down relatively quickly, especially since the fabric of the reinforcement layer that has remained cool absorbs heat. In addition, the process is carried out faster and the output per unit of time is higher. A more precise metering of the heat supplied is possible both with regard to the intensity and the actual action time.

As an advantageous embodiment of the method, the relief shape used can be galvanized or at least formed entirely of metal on its shaping surface. This ensures shape accuracy even with a high number of reproductions. Furthermore, good and rapid heat dissipation results on the printed side of the color picture film.

The invention is explained in more detail below using exemplary embodiments with reference to the drawing, which shows a schematic section of an arrangement for carrying out the method in an exploded view.

About the surface design of an original oil painting or z. B. crocodile leather as a negative form reproducing relief form 1, a color image film 2 is placed with the printed side 3 down. A reinforcement layer 9 is placed on the color picture film 2, which consists of a canvas-like fabric and on its side facing the color picture film 2 consists of a thin, dielectric, heatable coating, over which there is in turn a flat pressure compensation plate 7 made of closed-cell foam, which is not heatable by dielectric means .

The relief mold 1 is produced by known processes. For example, a negative soft cast made of silicone rubber or polyester resin can be made from the original oil painting. The color image film 2 is printed, for example, using the offset method, with a color image of the original oil painting having extremely precise color values being processed without light reflections to give accurately dimensioned offset films in four or more colors. Of course, it is important to pay attention to exact dimensional accuracy. Both in the production of these offset films and in the production of the relief mold 1, it is possible from the outset to provide registration marks outside the image field, which then make it easier to align the color film 2 with the relief mold 1.

To carry out the method, an electrode 4 arranged below the relief form 1 and on the one hand an electrode 5 arranged above the pressure compensation plate 7 are connected to a high-frequency generator 6. The electrodes 4, 5 are brought closer to one another until a predetermined pressure is exerted on the color image film 2 and the relief mold 1 via the pressure compensation plate 7 and the reinforcing layer 9. By briefly switching on the high-frequency generator 6, the color picture film 2 and the coating of the reinforcement layer 9 are heated dielectrically to their softening or welding temperature. The color picture film 2 deforms into the negatively formed forming surface of the relief mold 1, while the reinforcement layer 9 is simultaneously welded to the non-printed side of the color picture film 2. If the normal roughness of the original painting and thus the shaping surface of the relief mold 1 should not be sufficient to ensure the removal of the air enclosed in the depressions below the film, microscopic air channels can be formed in the relief plate 1 perpendicular to the electrode 4. Furthermore, the relief shape 1 can also be made microscopically porous, so that the air can escape over the entire surface of the color image film 2. Depending on the circumstances, the electrode 5 can be designed in such a way that a uniform, homogeneous heating of the film 2 is ensured over its entire strength and its entire dimensions. Appropriate subdivision of the electrode 5 can, however, also result in a somewhat higher or somewhat earlier heating in the middle of the surface of the color image film 2 if the resulting partial electrodes are switched on in a corresponding time sequence.

The printed color image film 2 deformed by the process results in a very precise replica of the original with the finest structures, so that even those that look almost smooth Surface shapes, for example, can be reproduced true to the original in the painting technique of the 19th century. The authenticity character is further emphasized by the fabric of the reinforcing layer 9 which is visible from the rear.

An HF generator 6 with a power of 40 KW and a frequency of 27.12 MHz has an electrode area of 50 x 50 cm, the electrodes 4, 5 having to be acted upon with a force of 300 KN / cm 2 . The color picture film 2 consists of PVC with a thickness of 0.2 mm and is rasterlessly printed on one side in 8-color granolitho art print. The thickness of the pressure compensation plate 7 is 20 mm and corresponds approximately to that of the relief form 1. The material of the reinforcing layer 9 consists of canvas-binding fabric made of nylon with a PVC coating of 0.1 mm thickness. After the electrodes 4, 5 have been applied, 30 sec. RF energy fed. After the electrodes 4, 5 have been switched off and moved apart, a surface structure of the color image film 2 that is true to the original and a full-surface welding with the reinforcing layer 9 are obtained. The imitation painting obtained in this way is nailed onto a conventional wooden frame.

Claims (3)

1. A process of reproducing oil paintings or forms of a similar surface structure under utilization of a relief form taken from an original and a smooth thermoplastic color image film, which has been printed in a manner corresponding to the original, with the film being placed under fitting alignment onto the relief form and being shaped, together with a back reinforcing layer, under heating in accordance with the surface structure of the original, characterized in that the color image film consists of a material adapted to be dielectrically heated through high frequency waves, preferably polyvinyl chloride, in that the reinforcing layer consists of a canvaslike fabric with a thin coating of a material adapted to be dielectrically heated through high frequency waves as well as to be welded to the color image film, preferably polyvinyl chloride, and in that, for dielectric heating, the reinforcing layer with its thin coating is placed on the back side of the color image film and, during heating, the back side of fabric of the reinforcing layer is acted upon via a pressure equalization plate of foam material with closed cells, which just like the relief form consists of a material that is not, or not to an extent worth mentioning, heatable dielectrically through high frequency waves, preferably silicon rubber.
2. The process of claim 1, characterized in that the relief form consists of metal at least on its side facing the color image film.
3. The process according to one of claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the pressure equalization plate (7) and/or the reflief form (1) are covered by an electrode (5 or, resp., 4) each, which is divided up into partial electrodes, and in that opposing pairs of partial electrodes of the electrodes (5, 4) or, resp., the partial electrodes of an electrode are switched on in timed succession.
