Definitions

  • Polypropylene in particular highly crystalline polypropylene, is a valued material as a molding material, because it is e.g. characterized by easy processability and leads to molded parts that have good heat resistance and high rigidity.
  • a well-known disadvantage of polypropylene is, however, that its toughness (roughly the fracture toughness according to DIN 53 443) decreases very strongly with temperatures that are below its glass point - that is about + 4 ° C. In practice, this means that at temperatures below + 4 ° C the useful value of molded parts made of polypropylene is considerably restricted.
  • thermoplastic polymers include, in particular, copolymers made from higher amounts of ethylene and lower amounts of an alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid (cf. AT-A-237 286).
  • thermoplastic copolymers in polypropylene molding compositions, however, must be bought with a certain disadvantage, namely a noticeable drop in the stiffness values (for example in the tensile modulus of elasticity according to DIN 53 457).
  • polypropylene molding compositions which are composed of (1) a certain polypropylene, (2) a certain thermoplastic copolymer made from (2.1) ethylene and (2.2) n-butyl acrylate and (3) one certain inorganic, platelet-shaped filler.
  • Processing aids stabilizers, colorants, flame retardants etc.
  • the new molding compositions can be produced directly from these components or, as has been practiced many times in comparable cases, via a concentrate of the filler (3) in one of the polymerization components (1) or (2). It goes without saying that care is taken to ensure that the components are distributed as homogeneously as possible; - i.e. that the other components are expediently worked in via the molten state of the polypropylene and under intensive mixing conditions, for example in a twin-screw kneader.
  • the molding compositions according to the invention can be used for processing polypropylene Molding compounds used in conventional processing machines can be processed into the usual molded parts known and customary for polypropylene, for example into films, profiles, plates, hollow bodies and body parts.
  • This mixture is homogenized in a twin-screw kneader at a temperature of about 220 ° C., extruded in strands, cooled and granulated.
  • Test specimens are injection molded from the granules thus obtained at melt temperatures of 220 ° C., specifically for determining the tensile modulus of elasticity in accordance with DIN 53 457, as a measure of the rigidity and fracture toughness in accordance with DIN 53 443 B (25 mm dome radius) Measure of toughness.
  • Example 1 is repeated with the two only exceptions that both the talc and the copolymer are eliminated.
  • the stiffness of the molding compositions according to the invention is approximately the same as that of polypropylene; the cold toughness is much better in the molding compositions according to the invention than in the polypropylene.
  • Very surprising is the positive finding that the absolute values of toughness are so high for the molding compositions according to the invention, since the addition of platelet-shaped talc in comparable other polypropylene molding compositions is known to significantly reduce their toughness values.
