Another method involves contacting materials with an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid in the absence of hydrogen fluoride under conditions in which at least some of the sulfur-containing impurities interact with fluoric hydrofluoric acid to form reaction products; separating said reaction products and fluorosilicic acid from carbon materials; and the subsequent processing of carbon materials with a fluorine-containing acidic solution, which contains an aqueous solution of fluorosilicic acid and hydrogen fluoride. Another method involves treating carbon materials with a fluorine-containing acidic solution, which contains an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen fluoride; separating carbonaceous materials from an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen fluoride and then contacting carbonic materials with an organic solvent capable of dissolving elemental sulfur.
