The method includes providing a device for heating the brine; providing at least one desalination zone comprising a condenser and a device for collecting condensate from the condenser; provision of a heat exchanger; supplying a feed stream consisting of salt water as a coolant to a condenser for preheating the feed stream; feeding the preheated feed stream to the brine heating device; supplying a first heating stream containing steam to a brine heating device for further heating the pre-heated feed stream; supplying the heated feed stream from the brine heating device to at least one desalination zone, evaporating at least a portion of the heated feed stream in the desalination zone to produce steam consisting of water vapor, and condensing the steam in the desalination zone.
