Abstract

An apparatus for detecting cracked grains of rice in unhulled rice or hulled rice has a rice inducing chute 3, at its bottom provided with a light transmitting window 7 and placed substantially horizontally or at a slight slope. A light quantity detecting means 10 has a light source 8 and a light receiving element 9 which are placed such that they are located optically opposite each other across the light transmitting window 7, along which the rice grains are running. During operation, the rice grains running on the light transmitting window 7 are scanned by the light from the light source 8. If a crack is present in the grain particle, this will give rise to a change in the amount of light transmitted through the grain particle and received by the light receiving element 9, such that the presence of cracks and consequently cracked rice grains is detected with great accuracy. <IMAGE>
