Abstract

Compostable material is continuously composted during downward movement in a container in counterflow to upwelling oxygen-containing gas coming from below and in such a way that the gases given off by the composting mass are sucked away from a zone beneath the upper level of the composting mass. As a result, the outgoing often malodorous gas is not vented directly into the atmosphere and its caloric content can be utilised for heat exchange. Furthermore, one avoids too heavy condensation of water vapour in the uppermost layer of material and the compression of the uppermost layer of material which is the result of such condensation and subsequent more difficult gas passage. An apparatus 11 to carry out the method has elements 17, 19, 20, 21 for leading away the outgoing gases, arranged beneath the level that will be the uppermost material level in the container during normal operation. With special advantage, nozzles 5 for capturing and leading away the outgoing gases is comprised of a broad piece 7 at the bottom and a narrow piece 6 at the top, the latter being connected to collecting lines 3; this achieves increased flow resistance with unequal distribution of the gas resistance in the mass undergoing composting. <IMAGE><IMAGE>
