Zusatz zum Patent 947Addendum to patent 947
Weiterhin sollen diese LösungsmittelThe subject of patent 947 517 is a process for the polycondensation of diol esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids such as terephthalic acid. According to this process, the diol esters or the diol ester mixture of aromatic dicarboxylic acids are dissolved in certain organic solvents and the polycondensation is carried out in these solvents. For this purpose, organic compounds are used as solvents which have two cyclic nuclei and are connected either directly or via O-, CO-, (CH 2 ) "groups (η - ι to 4) and / or partially or completely hydrogenated could be. The cyclic nuclei can also contain substituents such as CH 3 -, CH 3 O-, C 2 H 5 -, C 2 H 5 O-, C 3 H 7 -, C 3 H 7 O-. However, they should not contain any —OH, —NH 2 , —NO, —CN or —COOH groups as substituents in the molecule. Furthermore, these solvents should

Verwendet man z. Have boiling points above 180 ° and, with the diol split off in the condensation reaction, form an azeotrope mixture which. can be continuously removed from the reaction area. These solvents dissolve both the monomeric diol esters and the corresponding polycondensates. Examples include: methylnaphthalene, diphenyl, diphenyloxide, diphenylmethane and mixtures with one another. ίο In the conventional polycondensation of ethylene glycol esters of terephthalic acid in the melt, temperatures of up to 280 0 are required. At these temperatures, damage to the polycondensate occurs, e.g. B. through the formation of \ Äthei: bridges or through cracking. As a result, the polycondensate becomes yellow. In "the polycondensation of esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids in solvents which act as azeotrope formers, such as diphenylmethane (bp = 261 °), diphenyl (bp = 254 °), diphenyloxide (bp = 252 °), α-methylnaphthalene (bp = 254 °), a-methylnaphthalene (bp = 261 °). = 247.5 °), the condensation temperature is in the order of magnitude of the boiling range. If, for example, a-methylnaphthalene is used as the solvent, the condensation temperature is that which, at the end of the reaction, is required to remove the last traces of glycol from an approximately 50 percent by weight polyalkylene terephthalate containing solution must be used, about 260 °. Although the condensation takes place under much gentler conditions, "" here "" still "occurs" a slight yellowing of the products.
It has already been proposed to produce polycondensates from dicarboxylic acids and dihydroxy compounds. Among other things, terephthalic acid is mentioned as dicarboxylic acids and, in particular, transquinitol compounds are mentioned as dihydroxy compounds. The polycondensation of these two reactants is carried out in the melt, but it is also ; in m-cresol or phenol, which are used as solvents, possible. It has also been proposed that crosslinked, so non-stringy resins from z. B. phthalic anhydride and glycerol in the presence of a high-boiling liquid such as tetrahydronaphthalene or decahydronaphthalene. The present process cannot be compared with the process described, because neither the use of m-cresol or phenol as a solvent for the polycondensation nor the production of crosslinked, non-stringent resins is intended. For the production of linear, thread-drawing polycondensates, other measures must be observed in order to obtain high-quality, linear products that are suitable for the production of textile threads.
It has been found that 'particularly high quality, almost pure white' polycondensation products of 6ö esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids can be obtained if the condensation of z. B. Äthylenglykolesterii 'of ■ terephthalic acid or its precondensates in solution at temperatures below 250 °. According to the invention, the polycondensation can be carried out in this favorable temperature range in the above-mentioned high-boiling solvents if one works entirely or partially under reduced pressure so that the boiling points of the corresponding solvents or solvent mixtures are below 250 °, preferably 240 to 200 °. Normal pressure can be used at the beginning of the reaction. However, it is also expedient to work in such a way that the pressure is reduced more towards the end of the reaction. The polycondensation can then be carried out gently in the temperature range below 250 °, preferably from 240 to 200 °. If z. B. a-methylnaphthalene is used as the solvent, the reaction temperatures during the polycondensation of about 260 0 . Now, a vacuum of 500, 350 or 200 mm Hg is applied, it is possible to perform the polycondensation at 230, 214 and 192, respectively 0th If diphenyloxide is used as the solvent, the polycondensation can be carried out at a vacuum of 500, 350 or 200 mm Hg and the corresponding temperatures 235, 220 or 200 °. When using diphenylmethane as a solvent, the polycondensation may be at a vacuum of 350 mm Hg, and be conducted at 226 0th
