DEUTSCHES PATENTAMTGERMAN PATENT OFFICE
1010
It is already known to produce aryldicarboxylic acids or arylmonocarboxylic acids by oxidative saponification. It is in this case made of terminally halogenated xylene which is oxidized under pressure at temperatures up to 400 0 in the presence of aqueous alkalis ,. It has also been proposed to oxidize p-xylylene dichloride with potassium permanganate to terephthalic acid. It is also known to convert p-xylene with oxygen-containing gas mixtures at temperatures above 100 ° into terephthalic acid.
In patent 930,751 a method of manufacturing of terephthalic acid by oxidation of p-xylylene dichloride with nitric acid medium Concentration, preferably from 20 to 40%, at temperatures of preferably 110 up to 120 ° and without applying pressure.
Man kann nämlich das p-Xylylendichlorid zunächst entwederIt has now been found in a further development of the method of the main patent that one to Terephthalic acid yields of over 90% in one operation are achieved if the oxidation of p-xylylene dichloride with 40 to 65% nitric acid performs. It is also possible to reduce the oxidizing power of nitric acid by various means To increase measures that can be applied at the same time. One can namely the p-xylylene dichloride initially either

mit Wasser oder mit verdünnter Salpetersäure bzw. mit der Mutterlauge eines vorhergehenden Ansatzes anteigen und dann das Reaktionsprodukt mit 40-with water or with dilute nitric acid or with the mother liquor from a previous batch to paste and then the reaction product with 40-
, treat up 6s o / öiger nitric acid preferably having 45 to 6o ° / cent nitric acid, with simultaneous warming to about 11o °. Another measure to increase the ability of nitric acid to oxidize consists in returning the nitrous gases formed during the reaction, such as NO 2 , NO, NOCl, N 2 O 3 , to the reaction mixture. However, it is also possible to combine both of the above measures and to conduct the reaction in such a way that the starting product is first made into a paste with water or with dilute nitric acid, then nitric acid is added to a concentration of 30 to 65%, preferably 45 to 60% and then the nitrous gases which are formed are fed back into the reaction mixture. Under the last-mentioned conditions it is possible to use a 30% strength nitric acid because the presence of the nitrous gases automatically increases the nitric acid concentration to at least 40%. When these measures are used, the reaction mixture is exposed to relatively high concentrations of the oxidizing substances during the entire oxidation process.
The present invention shows a technical advance over the known processes on. While namely in the oxidative saponification of aryldicarboxylic acids under pressure must be worked, arises in addition to the oxidation with potassium permanganate. the desired Terephthalic acid also manganese dioxide, which makes cumbersome cleaning operations necessary. According to the present process, however, the conversion of p-xylylene dichloride into terephthalic acid succeeds without applying pressure while maintaining certain nitric acid concentrations and certain temperatures. The terephthalic acid is obtained in large yield and is characterized by their pure white texture.
Danach werden 1832 g 60- bis 65°/oige Salpetersäure tropfenweise hinzugegeben unter gleichzeitiger Erhöhung der Temperatur auf400 g of p-xylylene dichloride are mixed with 660 g Water made into a paste and gradually heated to 100 ° with a turbine. Yield of terephthalic acid is 92%, with only very small amounts of terephthalaldehyde acid appear.
Beispiel 2 .Example 2.
To 400 g of xylylene 2500 g 40 0 / o nitric acid are added with slow warming to ioo ° dropwise. Towards the end of the addition of nitric acid, the temperature of the mixture is increased to Ho 0 . The nitrous gases that are formed are returned to the reaction mixture in a circuit by interposing a cooler. The reaction is complete after 3 to 4 hours, and especially after cooling, the terephthalic acid separates out of the reaction mixture in a completely white consistency in a yield of 98% of theory. A small amount of terephthalaldehyde acid is formed as a by-product.
Die Ausbeute an Terephthalsäure beträgt 90% der Theorie.2000 g of p-xylylene dichloride are mixed with 3700 g of a mother liquor from a previous oxidation batch made into a paste. The mother liquor still has a nitric acid content of 5%. Under turbines it is gradually heated to 100 °. After that 8000 g of 60% nitric acid are added dropwise with a simultaneous increase in the Temperature to iio °. After some time, HCl is generated. The also evolving nitrogen-containing gases are circulated with the interposition of a cooler " returned to the reaction solution. The terephthalic acid yield is 90% of theory.
