Description

Process for accelerating water softening by adding Alkali carbonates It is known to reduce the hardness of water by adding alkali carbonates, in particular of soda, with the separation of calcium carbonate, or due to a degree that no longer interferes with the implementation of the washing process.

It is also known that this softening process by the addition are significantly accelerated by finely divided calcium carbonate in the calcite form can. The calcite crystals act here as crystal nuclei, their inoculating effect the causes rapid excretion of calcium carbonate from the water to be softened. In this known process, calcium carbonate can be of natural origin, z. B. in the form of finely ground minerals such as marble, dolomite and chalk, as can also be used in the form of a precipitated product. But it turned out that by precipitation from solutions of water-soluble calcium salts by means of alkali carbonates produced calcium carbonate is not very active for the stated purpose. Neither Calcium carbonate has proven to be effective in softening water with help of a Mixture of soda and quicklime in the water to be softened is generated.

In contrast, now - in addition to the proposal of the earlier patent 962 329 for the use of an alkali metal carbonate produced by the action of calcium hydroxide Calcium carbonate produced - found that you can soften the water by adding of alkali carbonates, especially soda, in the presence of calcium carbonate in the calcite form can particularly accelerate if one by the action Calcium carbonate produced from calcium sulfate on alkali carbonates is used, whereby work in the absence of magnesia whenever possible.

The production of calcium carbonate from calcium sulfate takes place in in a manner known per se, for example by reacting finely divided in water Plaster of paris with excess soda solution.

When implementing it, it is essential that magnesia be kept away as much as possible is, since a content of 1% magnesia in calcium carbonate (Ca 0 = Ioo) the Water softening accelerating effect of the calcium carbonate interferes sensitively. Keeping organic compounds away is also important, as is the case with that U.S. Patent 962,329.

The calcite form calcium carbonate thus produced has the same good properties such as the action of calcium hydroxide on alkali carbonates manufactured product. Example 34 parts of CaSO4 2 H2O are used in 100 parts Water well distributed by stirring vigorously. Then you put 22 parts of calcined Add soda and stir until the mixture has become runny again. this is the case in 15 to 20 minutes. Then you suck off, wash out and dry at Ioo up to 150 °.

Zeit in Minuten o,I g Ca CO3/l aus Ca SO4 O 20° 5 6° I0 5° 15 5° The table below shows the acceleration of the softening effect of soda by calcium carbonate produced in this way. A water with 16 ° Ca 0 and 4 ° Mg O non-carbonate hardness was softened at 12 to 13 ° with ig soda / l. Time in minutes 0.1 g Ca CO3 / l from Ca SO4 O 20 ° 5 6 ° I0 5 ° 15 5 °
