The invention relates to a method of manufacture of foam bodies which contain radioactive bodies in such a distribution that the Alpha rays and emanations formed during the decay of radioactive bodies without emanation can exit further.
By means of such radioactive foam bodies, the possibility of an easy-to-use one for the first time becomes possible Emanation therapy created.
Dies trifftIt is already known Kompretten, Auflagekissen od. The like. Using the in the extraction from. radioactive material remaining waste - for example the monazite sand ■ - to manufacture. You already have radioactive rubber sponges or radioactive rubber threads made, whereby the chewing material is fine ground radioactive ores, ζ Β. Uranium pitch blende, added as a filler. In the one made in this way Finished products, however, are the powdery fillers that serve as radioactive emitters body mostly surrounded by such a thick covering layer that in this case essentially only Gamma radiation is possible, while the radium emanation, which is formed as a gaseous decay product, from the rubber compound that surrounds them on all sides cannot escape. This is true

auch für die Alpha-Strahlen, zu, denen ebenfalls ein wesentlicher therapeutischer Effekt zuzuschreiben ist.also for the alpha rays, too, to those as well an essential therapeutic effect is to be ascribed to.
It is also known that radium, which decomposes in radium emanation, diais, like emanation, primarily emits alpha rays at high speed, in the form of an aqueous solution of the salt, for example RaBr 2 or RaCl 2 ; to soak absorbent tissues ίο or the like, whereby the radioactive solution is evenly distributed over the surface in a very high dilution. But this way of working has the. Disadvantage that the remaining radioactive salt can be washed away again when the soaked tissue becomes wet. It is true that the fabric soaked with the water-soluble radium salts could be provided with a water-impermeable and waterproof cover; in this case, however, the emianation cannot escape into the free atmosphere again. The disadvantages shown are avoided if one. According to the present invention, the radioactive body to be used is introduced into a water-insoluble foam mass made of thermoplastic or polymerizing, natural or artificial material, which by means of a method known per se by the production of. fine bubbles were converted into a shape corresponding or similar to the so-called foam rubber. In this way, a stabilized foam is obtained, between the bubbles of which there are microscopically thin walls that offer no resistance to the escape of alpha rays or to radium emanation. Foam rubber made from natural or synthetic rubber has proven to be particularly suitable, during the production of which the radioactive body was preferably introduced in an even distribution into the so-called activator causing the foaming.
The individual molecules of the water-soluble radioactive body are thereby in the water-insoluble, but air-permeable foam mass is embedded, the pores of which are made up of the gaseous emanation that forms the radioactive base body. The emanation can remain in the cavities of the foam body and - just like the radioactive body itself - by sending out alpha rays. their Make an impact. If the exit of the emanation on the outer wall of such a radioactive foam mat should be prevented, so kaniiu them on this side with a thicker one, for the emanation impermeable layer of the same or a similar substance can be provided.
According to the invention, such a radioactive emanation-permeable foam body is obtained by. In the production of the foam masses obtained by known processes, small amounts of an aqueous solution of radioactive substances are added to the foam-forming activator before the polymerization process, for example 60 cm 3 of distilled water with 10 mg of RaBr 2 per 170 g of activator mass.
However, it is also possible to use thermoplastic plastics using methods known per se to use. Fine chewing candies with little fillers can also be used, according to the type of So-called foam rubbers are processed, but particular care is taken must wierden that the wall thickness is chosen so · small; that they have the passage of alpha rays and the emanation that forms in the process.
As far as the usefulness of the radioactive foam mass according to the invention is concerned, it can not only be used as a pure foam cushion with the corresponding therapeutic effects. You can, rather also for emanating liquids - such. B. oil, water and the like - ■ can be used. Even solids of the most varied types can be emanated with the aid of the radioactive foam body, for which purpose 1 they are expediently introduced in layers together with such radioactive foam bodies into closed vessels and left there for a certain period of time.
