Description
Process for reverse development of photographic recordings (without intermediate exposure) Various methods are known for immediately exposing exposed silver halide emulsions to transform into positives.
One method is that after the first development created negative silver image, the remaining bromide silver blackened will. This blackening can be achieved by the so-called second exposure or chemically Sodium sulfide or by sodium hydrosulfite. Another procedure According to the German patent 694 341, this type consists in converting the bromide silver into iodide silver to transform that in turn with direct blackening chemicals is treated.
However, with these procedures discolored and unclear positives result; It is also disadvantageous that those produced with sulfur-containing blackening agents Images cannot be attenuated.
About qualitatively satisfactory positives from the remaining bromide silver To get one, one must deal again with developers who have this Bromide silver reduce to silver. A prior intermediate exposure is necessary for this. This The process is carried out with special developing machines in the reversal facility. For the amateur and the professional photographer it is hardly applicable because of the dosage the intermediate exposure and the reinsertion of the wet film into the developing tank causes considerable difficulties.
For this reason, methods were sought in which the effect the second or intermediate exposure, d. H. the production of the so-called silver germs in the rest of the bromide silver, is obtained chemically. According to the German patents 571 026, 745 440 and 681 783 are thioureas and various of them Derivatives or dioxindole or benzoin sulfonic acid used.
The previously known methods of this type have not been used in practice introduced because -the quality of the images obtained with it does not meet modern requirements is equivalent to. With the methods mentioned, only unclear, obscured ones are obtained Positive.
A procedure that produces clear, well-graded positives has surprisingly been found found that after the negative silver image had been removed by an acidic chromate Bath the remaining halogen silver emulsion with a strongly alkaline, sodium sulfite-containing agent Bath, the so-called "activating liquor", is treated, which may contain 6-nitrobenzimil @dazole nitrate is added. This activating solution can also be added to the secondary developer. This bath causes the remaining halogen silver to blacken and frees the emulsion of all fog-forming, undesired residues and prevents the formation of fog in the subsequent positive development. The emulsion thus treated is developed again with a commercially available developer and then fixed in the usual way, see above you get a positive image with tone levels from clear light to deep dark, the addition of 6-nitrobenzimidazole nitrate is very useful. The extension during which time the activating liquor containing the nitrobenzimidazole nitrate before the second development, the control is for the increase in sensitivity. About that In addition, the new process offers the significant advantage that even in a wide margin underexposed emulsions still have good usable positives even with normal commercial goods .for amateur photography. Even then there were deep shadows scored when the footage is an eighth or less of the required instead of normal Amount of light was exposed.
The effect of the activating liquor can be improved by adding it a wetting agent, but such is not absolutely necessary. An increased The alkalinity of the developer for the second development has a beneficial effect as it reduces the blackening reinforced. The process is not limited to black and white photography, but can also be used for color films that are sufficient against the chemicals mentioned are persistent.
The procedure will be explained in more detail using an example. EXAMPLE A commercially available film with a sensitivity of 18/1 DIN was exposed in clear sunshine in the open air at aperture II at 150 seconds, that is, much too short. The exposed film was treated for 2 minutes with a developer which contained 2 g of Metol, 70 g of sodium sulfite, 10 g of hydroquinone, 50 g of anhydrous soda to 1 l of water. The film was then placed in a bleaching bath for 2 minutes which contained 12 g of potassium dichromate and g cc of concentrated sulfuric acid in water. The film, rinsed in water for 3 minutes, was then put into an activating liquor for 5 minutes, consisting of 50 g sodium sulfite, 15 g caustic soda, o, ig 6-nitrobenzimidazole nitrate and 2 g wetting agent per 1 l of water. Thereafter, it was treated again with the developer specified above for 3 minutes and finally fixed for 10 minutes with a fixing bath which had been prepared from commercially available fixing salt according to the instructions given by the manufacturer for amateur photographers. After the usual washing and drying, a positive film with good tone gradation resulted.
The proportions and additives given in the example can can of course be varied accordingly; the chromate bath (bleach bath) can also be useful be made up with 5 g of chromic anhydride in 1 l of water.
