Process for the separation of higher molecular weight alcohols from mixtures with
Hydrocarbons Higher molecular weight alcohols are used in certain, currently common
technical manufacturing process obtained in a mixture with hydrocarbons, for example
when one of the alcohols by partial chlorination of hydrocarbons and hydrolysis
of the chlorides formed. Similar mixtures are obtained if one uses higher molecular weight

Acids, esters and the like treated with hydrogen.
It has already been proposed to use such mixtures by extraction
Solvents that do not mix completely with the substances to be extracted,
especially with lower aliphatic alcohols, aliphatic acids and esters
of the alcohols mentioned with lower aliphatic acids, optionally in the presence
of extracting water. However, this method is in the previously known embodiment
not completely satisfactory, because either those in the starting mixtures
contained alcohols are not sufficiently fully extracted or in particular
insufficient when using solvents that have only been slightly diluted with water
can be obtained free of hydrocarbons.
20 °/o Wasser enthaltendem Methanol, behandelt,
It has now been found that one avoids these disadvantages if one
the mixtures mentioned initially with oxygen-containing compounds that are more heavily diluted with water
organic solvents, in particular of the type of the substances mentioned above, e.g.
B. with at least
Methanol containing 20% water, treated,
then in a second stage the undissolved portion of the mixture with the same
or another solvent of the type mentioned, but with a lower water content,
washes and the dissolved portion, if necessary together with the solvent,
returns to the first extraction stage. With this it is advantageous
Apply such a water content that in the solvent layer only
small amounts, e.g. B. dissolve up to 2o% alcohols, because with higher alcohol contents
hydrocarbons are also dissolved through solubilization. When using a
Solvents with sufficient water content result in alcohols with only insignificant amounts
Amounts of hydrocarbons, e.g. B. 3 ° / a, which therefore hardly differ from products,
how they z. B. formed in the hydrogenation of fats or fatty acids.
The portion of the starting mixture not dissolved in the first extraction stage
is then further treated with a more concentrated solvent, e.g. B. methanol with 5
° / o water, extracted. Here, extracts are obtained that contain significantly more hydrocarbons
contain. You will, expediently after removal of the solvent, again
added to the starting mixture to be broken down. In this way the hydrocarbons can
fairly largely freed from alcohols, e.g. B. up to a content of
about 5 per cent. In many cases, however, you can deal with a less complete
Removal of alcohols, e.g. B. to 10%, content and the product again for
conversion into alcohols by way of chlorination or particularly expedient
use over oxidation.
Particularly suitable solvents are methyl alcohol, but also ethyl alcohol,
Acetic acid, acetone, methyl formate and similar solvents, all with the mentioned,
water additives adapted to the individual case are used.
in Form kleiner Tropfen aufsteigt.
The method can be very expedient using trickle towers
run, which may be filled with random packings. In these trickle towers
one introduces the alcohol-hydrocarbon mixture to be broken down from below, while
the water-containing solvent is fed in from above. By attaching sieves
or nozzles of suitable design ensure that the mixture is in the solvent
rises in the form of small drops. The extraction is done pretty quickly and at
suitable distribution without the formation of emulsions. Above and below close
to the separation zone calming zones, at the outer ends of which the undissolved portion
and the extract can be continuously withdrawn from the tower. From the separated products
the solvents can be removed by distillation. Here separate under
