Method for activating the secondary emission electrodes of electrical
Multiplier Tubes The invention relates to a method for activating the electrodes
of electrical multiplier tubes, especially photomultipliers. That for this
The usual method up to now consisted in a container at the end of the multiplier tube
to evaporate the activation material and the steam over the individual electrodes
to direct. This is illustrated in FIG. In this Fig. Z, @z is the multiplier vessel,
with 2 the cathode and 3 with the anode. q., 5, 6 and 7 are multiplier electrodes,
which are activated in the manner described. The evaporation tank 8 is
attached to one end of the tube. It has now been found that
this method activates the individual electrodes in a non-uniform manner
he follows. The secondary emission properties of the impact electrodes are different,
without being able to specify a specific law for this. So it can happen
that the layers in the middle of the vessel are better activated than those
Layers that lie near the two ends of the vessel.
The invention now provides a new means by means of which the difficulties
can be eliminated. According to the invention, the activation process on two or
several points of the tube at the same time the evaporated activation material in
let in the tube. This method is illustrated in an example in FIG.
That
Multiplier tube with numerous multiplier electrodes is
denoted by g. The two evaporation vessels are at the two ends of the tube
and i r attached, while in the middle of the tube there is a third evaporation vessel
12 is provided for the activation material. So the activation material will
fed to the electrodes from .three containers distributed over the length of the pipe. That
The tube and the container are preferably exposed to the same temperature.
It has been shown that very good layers with uniform secondary emission properties can be produced in this way. It is advisable to provide an evaporation tank for every six amplifier electrodes.
The invention is based on the following knowledge: When the Aktivkrungsmaterial
is evaporated at one end of the pipe in a container and the steam through the connecting pipe
enters the latter between the evaporation vessel and the pipe, it comes
gradually in contact with the individual electrodes at certain time intervals.
It reacts first of all with the material lying next to the evaporation vessel
Electrode, then flows on to the next electrode, and this process continues
continue until the steam has come into contact with all electrodes.
The electrode reached first by the activation process now remains during the entire process
Activation process exposed to the vapor during each subsequent electrode
comes into contact with the steam for an ever shorter period of time. If now an electrode
in contact with the steam for a certain period of time at a certain pipe temperature
the activation material begins to diffuse into deeper layers of the electrode
and reacts with the carrier material. The secondary emission of such layers can
then be less good than the secondary emission of a layer, which only takes a shorter time
was in contact with the vaporous activation material. That explains itself
The fact that the electrodes located close to the evaporation source may be
despite the sufficient vaporization, a relatively low secondary emission capacity
demonstrate. On the other hand, however, other electrodes get again that are too far from the
Evaporation source are removed, too little activation material, so that their
Secondary emissivity can be less than about that of the intermediate
Electrodes that form an active layer of the correct thickness
Has. These disadvantages cannot be avoided by using the
Method by increasing the temperature of the tube and the container for the
Seeks to shorten activation material; because a higher temperature accelerates
also the occurrence of the undesired reaction of the activating material with the
Carrier material of the electrode. In the method according to the invention, however
the activation process accelerates and the inlet time for the vaporized activation material
shortened without changing anything in the other conditions in the pipe
would have to. The individual multiplier electrodes come in very quickly with the steam
Touch and good secondary emission layers form before any
undesirable and harmful reactions could occur. The procedure after the
Invention has another advantage. In the manufacture of secondary emission amplifiers
it is necessary to open the pipe after admitting the activating material and the
Melting still to be subjected to a heating process. Due to the increased evenness
of the layers is the necessary heating time for all electrodes at least approximately
same. In the production of the layers according to the previously known methods needed
the layers covered with stronger rizit activation material require a longer bake-out time,
so that there was a risk that during the necessary long bakeout the weaker
Layers provided with activation material are already beginning to disintegrate.
