Process for the preparation of acetyl chloride It is known acetyl chloride
by passing a mixture of methyl chloride and carbon dioxide over it at an elevated temperature
under normal or increased pressure via contacts, e.g. B. non-volatile inorganic
Acids or their salts, if necessary using contact carriers.
The use of indifferent, highly thermally conductive metals such as copper,
Nickel and 3g1: recommended as material for the reaction vessel. For the technical
Usefulness of this process is crucial that the methyl chloride, so far
it is not implemented, can be recovered unchanged. In this regard
the known processes work unfavorably, since they usually 4.o to -, 15%
or even less methyl chloride can be recovered. The yields are therefore
unsatisfactory - they are generally around, depending on the level of sales
5o °; o and less. The sales based on methyl chloride are not bad,
but this has practically no effect because, "as mentioned, a large part of the
Methyl chloride can no longer be recovered, which can be attributed to it
is that considerable amounts of hydrogen chloride are split off.
A new method has now been found which addresses these disadvantages
does not have, so a significantly higher yield, somewhat over g / o amount
and a practically complete, but at least 100%, recovery of the
Methyl chloride enables.
The process according to the invention: for the production of acetyl chloride from
Carbon oxide and methyl chloride at elevated temperature and below g @ usually ° m or
Increased pressure essentially consists in the fact that the starting materials are replaced by non-metallic
Conversion vessels that do not contain catalysts. So it is
It is noteworthy that here the use of the required in the known processes
Catalysts is avoided. It is sufficient
an empty conversion vessel,
z. B. a tube made of ceramic material, e.g. B. Porcelain and the like. Is important
Furthermore, that the wall of the reaction vessel is as smooth as possible, for. B. glazed, and
if necessary, is brought to a high gloss by mechanical processing. Further
it is advantageous if the reaction vessel has a higher temperature than the one passed through
Has conversion mixture. This is expediently preheated to about 700 to 800 '
and passed through the reaction vessel at a temperature of about 800 to goo '.
If the reaction is not complete, the gas can pass through the reaction vessel several times
be passed, which is possible without disadvantage, since an elimination of hydrogen chloride
does not occur. The gas emerging from the reaction vessel is used to obtain the
Acetyl chloride e.g. B. with an inert solvent such as glacial acetic anhydride,
washed, from which it can then be obtained pure by distillation.
It has also been found that an improvement in conversion can, if appropriate, be achieved if the reaction product is quenched immediately after its formation, ie if it is brought into contact with cold surfaces. These surfaces can also be metallic, since the metals only impair the reaction if they are at an elevated temperature. To practice this method one can use simple devices. You can z. B. in the conversion vessel or in its immediate vicinity cooled surfaces, z. B. an internally cooled metal tube, with which the reaction mixture comes into contact. Improvements in the conversion ratios can thereby be achieved. Example-Through an 8oo to goo 'hot, internally glazed, empty porcelain tube, at a speed of 0.5 to 0.8 m / sec. a mixture of 20 % carbon oxide and 10% methyl chloride, heated to 750 ', passed. Based on methyl chloride, 9.3 % acetyl chloride is obtained. 83.2 per cent of the methyl chloride is recovered unchanged; 7.5% of the same are lost through side reactions due to the elimination of hydrogen chloride, the formation of ethylene, etc. The yield is therefore 92.5% . The gas mixture can after removal of the acetyl chloride, for. B. by washing with an inert solvent, e.g. B. acetic anhydride, and after replenishing the consumed gas mixture in the circuit in the reaction furnace and thus a practically complete implementation can be achieved by repeated throughput.
In a porcelain tube about 6o cm long, a 7 cm protruding tube becomes
Copper deplegmator with a temperature of -j-- 13 'arranged and thereby the
Quenched reaction gas, the conversion can be achieved with the same high yield
be increased to between 14 and 15 per cent.
