Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
In order to keep sinking ships still floating, the outer edge has a Number of cells provided that only open at the moment of danger.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 shows a ship in cross section with the cells folded together, Fig. 2 shows the cells when they have partially opened, and Fig. 3 when they are fully opened. FIG. 4 shows a ship in a longitudinal view and FIG. 5 shows such a ship in outline with open cells. The cells are best made of iron or steel plates A, which are attached to the hull by means of hinges D. The three other sides of each cell are made of leather, waterproof canvas or the like and are of course airtight with the plate and of course just as airtight with the ship. In each cell there is one or more springs that push the cell open. The cells are generally compressed flat and held in place by a rotatable hook B which projects into the ship with an extension beyond the pivot point and is provided with a float b . If water penetrates the ship through a collapse, an accumulation or the like, it will lift the floats b and thus the hooks B are pulled down and the plates A of the cells free, which open by the springs and the water pressure and hold the ship . So that the cells can open and fill with air, they are of course provided with air valves.
