In der Gießereitechnik werden zur Herstellung von Gußstücken Formen verwendet, in die Kerne eingesetzt sind. Man unterscheidet hierbei Innenkerne, die die inneren Konturen von Gußstücken wiedergeben und demgemäß Außenkerne für die Außenkonturen, wobei zum Fixieren der Kerne in der Form Kernmarken und Kernstützen vorgesehen sind.
