Im Jahre 1850 fand Mercer, dafs Baumwolle, mit concentrirter Natronlauge behandelt, in der Länge sowohl als in der Breite zusammengezogen wird, wodurch das Gewebe dichter wird und sich gleichzeitig seine Affinität zu den Farbstoffen erhöht. Bedruckt man die Stoffe vor der Behandlung mit Natronlauge mit Gummi, so wirkt die Lauge an diesen Stellen nicht ein und man erhält gemusterte Stoffe. Die von der Lauge getroffenen Stellen laufen ein und bleiben glatt, während die reservirten Stellen durch das Zusammenziehen ganz kraus werden. Man kann ebenfalls verdickte Natronlauge auf das Gewebe aufdrucken, wodurch der gleiche Effect erzielt wird. (Siehe Kurrer & Engels, Färberei und Druckerei, 4. Aufl., 1874, S. 12 bis 16). B. mit einem Diaminfarbstoff versetztes Albumin über eine solche, z. B. aus 125 g Zinnsalz und 1 1 Gummiwasser präparirte Zinnsalzreserve druckt, so wird beim Dämpfen der Azofarbstoff reducirt und gleichzeitig die Fixirung des Albumins verhindert.The fixation of the before mercerization on the cotton resp.
