Description
Method for the fire-safe impregnation of animal fibers The object of the invention is to make animal fibers fire-safe by impregnation. It is aimed in particular at making feathers fireproof, namely goose feathers, which are used for the production of artificial Christmas trees, because with such Christmas trees the risk of ignition due to the burning candles is particularly great. The consequences of a burning Christmas tree because of the usually located in its vicinity children are particularly serious.
It is known to use water glass to make vegetable tissues non-inflatable. The plant tissue soaks up during the impregnation with the aqueous waterglass solution. Upon evaporation - of the water then forms in the interstices, ie between the individual fibers, a silicate framework with inclusions of crystal water. When tissue treated in this way is brought above its inflammation temperature, the enclosed water of crystallization is first expelled. This causes the silicate framework to expand, with the effect that, to a certain extent, a silicate armor is created around the tissue and through the tissue. This armor prevents the entry of oxygen from the air and in this way makes it impossible to ignite. This impregnation has proven itself particularly with wood. However, it cannot be applied to animal fibers, which essentially consist of a keratin structure, since animal tissues are not absorbent like cellulose-based plant tissues. The above-described effect which can be achieved with vegetable fibers cannot therefore be achieved with animal fibers by a simple water glass treatment. In addition, an ordinary water-glass coating peels off easily and also affects the appearance, which is particularly disadvantageous in the case of goose feathers, which are intended for the production of artificial Christmas trees.
B. Ammoniak,.In addition to water glass, other flame-retardant substances are known. Their effect is based on the elimination of inert gases, e.g. B. ammonia ,.
But there must be these substances in the present Case out of consideration because its effect is very limited, fire safety So some time after the impregnation is no longer guaranteed. Just at artificial Christmas trees, however, it depends on the durability of the impregnation effect at.
There is also a flame retardant paint under the name Locron known. This is a product based on urea-formaldehyde condensates the A stage (liquid condensation form). By adding formaldehyde and acting heat is applied to a fabric coated with this substance, the C-level (firm, insoluble condensation form). The fire protection effect is based on the decomposition with the formation of carbonic acid, ammonia and formaldehyde gas during combustion. These Type of refractory is also ruled out for the intended purpose because the application process is too cumbersome and therefore too expensive. The prime cost the animal fibers, e.g. B. the goose feathers, but may through the fire protection impregnation cannot be increased significantly. In addition, this impregnation has the disadvantage that the fibers receive a Kaurit glue coating, as it is actually the case with the paint is about Kaurit.lei.m. Such a coating, however, suffers from the appearance of the Christmas tree branches so strong that they can no longer be used.
B. i Minute lang, in etwa halbkonzentrierte Wasserglaslösung getaucht. It has now been shown, surprisingly, that the water glass process can be modified so that it can be used for the fire-proof impregnation of animal tissue, z. B. for the impregnation of twisted to the formation of artificial Christmas trees on wires Goose feathers, is suitable with advantage. It was found that on the fiber Water glass with heavy metal salt converted to metal silicate and metal hydroxide and by adding a suitable wetting agent a firmly adhering waterglass film which is provided with -% metal silicate and metal hydroxide inclusions and which has an excellent flame retardant effect on the protein tissue. An artificial ear tree branch impregnated in this way can last for several minutes be held in a flame without igniting. It shows as tests have shown, not even a togetherness, mor of the branch. The impregnation according to the invention has the further advantage that the appearance of the branch in in no way suffers. The method according to the invention can be applied in such a way that animal fibers, e.g. B. the springs twisted on a wire, so the finished Christmas tree branches in a solution of a wetting agent, which is a heavy metal salt is added, bathed, then immersed in a moderately concentrated waterglass solution and then dried. For example, you can proceed as follows: that the branches are brought into a bath, which consists of an approximately i-Abis 3% strength Solution of a wetting agent, e.g. B. a fatty alcohol sulfonate, and a 6- to 8% Solution of tin (11) chloride. The branches remain in this bath for about 20 minutes long, then they are removed, shaken off and briefly, e.g. B. for i minute, immersed in about half-concentrated water glass solution. After that the branches become shaken off and hung to dry in suitable facilities. It is advisable, prepare the tin (11) chloride solution with distilled water. For the water glass solution the commercially available water glass can be used and with the same to double Amount of water to be diluted.
Except for the sulfonates mentioned in the above-mentioned embodiment Of course, other wetting agents can also be used. There come, for example Consideration: alkali soaps of all kinds, such as stearates, oleates, phthalates, linoleates, Laurates, naphthenates; Wax soaps, which are obtained by being saponifiable Waxes are totally or partially saponified with alkali; Resin soaps made by saponification produced from rosin; Bile acid preparations, as they come under the trade names Curacit, Sabunit and the like are in traffic; alkylnaphthalenesulfonic acid salts, as they are known under the trade names Nekal A, Nekal AEM; Sulfonates of all kinds z. B. Turkish red oil; Fatty alcohol sulfonates, etc .; organic bases, for example Triethanolamine.
All heavy metal salts can be used, which are in water or others suitable solvents are soluble and which contain the metal in the anion or cation. For example, the above-mentioned tin (II) chloride can be replaced by pink salt (N N4) 2 (Sn C1) 6 or by the preparation salt Na4 [Sn (O H)] s. Also tin (I1) sulfate has proven itself.
It is not just what is commonly known as water glass understood soda water glass useful. Potash water glass can also be used will.
When using the soaps, care should be taken that there are no such heavy metal salt is used, which is insoluble by reaction with the soap Forms heavy metal soaps.
Additional flame protection can be achieved in that applied to the springs glass powder, preferably dusted, which the Causes the formation of a train of silicates.
The invention is applicable to all types of animal fibers. Because the already mentioned increased risk of fire and damage it is for off Animal feathers, mainly goose feathers produced artificial Christmas tree or decorative decorations and the like particularly significant.
