Description
Process for producing etched reliefs from colloid layers by dissolving them out of the image-wise dispersed silver They are methods of creating reliefs of colloidal layers became known, in which silver image-wise distributed in the layer by a Etching process is removed. When treating the colloid layers with certain etching solutions is (las colloid is dissolved wherever image silver is present, while the image silver-free Withstand exposure to the etching bath for at least a certain amount of time. The unaffected parts of the layer thus form a relief that corresponds to the original Distribution of silver in the layer is complementary.
There are already various solutions for carrying out such etching processes has been proposed. They contain hydrogen peroxide as an essential component and also acids, soluble halogen salts and copper sulfate as reaction accelerators. The baths that have become known so far have various shortcomings. If you use Mixtures with a very intense corrosive effect, then mostly the colloid also attacked in the places where there is no silver picture; thereby softened the layer as a whole is so strong that the contours of the picture and the relief are lost becomes unsuitable for further processing. One tried to help against by treating the layer with a 5% solution of potassium alum before etching. The whole colloid layer is tanned; the consequence of this is that the etching is going on at a slower rate; through this is the opportunity given that a second source of error can appear.
In addition to the dissolution reaction, there is always a leaching reaction in the etching process associated, which arises from the fact that silver metal under the action Halogen ions containing etching baths is converted more or less quickly into halogen silver. When etching a tanned colloid layer or when the etching solution contains too many halogen ions in relation to the copper salt and hydrogen peroxide or if one with exhausted baths works, then the bleaching process outweighs the etching process. The parts of the layer that contain little silver are particularly easy to bleach out before the colloid can dissolve to a significant extent. Only where there is a lot of picture silver is present, the colloid dissolves sufficiently quickly and thoroughly. In this way, a relief is obtained that, because of the tonal value clipping, in the Image parts containing less silver are unusable.
Beispiel i Wasser iooo ccm, Eisensulfat ioo/oig io ccm, Bromkalium ioo/oig 3o ccm, Schwefelsäure conc. 5o ccm, Wasserstoffsuperoxyd 3oo/oig 100 ccm. Beispiel 2 Wasser iooo ccm, Eisensulfat 309, Schwefelsäure conc. 20 ccm, Natriumacetat 30 g, Harnstoffwasserstoffsuperoxyd 50 g.All these deficiencies are remedied if acidic solutions with hydrogen peroxide are used for etching, which contain a salt of divalent iron as an accelerator; According to the invention, the effect of such etching baths can be further improved if organic or inorganic compounds are added which are capable of forming stable complex compounds which release only minimal amounts of ferric ions with trivalent iron in acidic solution. The presence of halogen salts in the baths according to the invention is of minor importance. Good results can be achieved with both halogen-free and halogen-containing solutions. Compounds such as ferrous sulfate or ferrous ammonium sulfate are used as ferrous salts; Alkali salts of acetic acid, citric acid and the like, alone or in a mixture with the free acids themselves, and salts of hydrofluoric acid and phosphoric acid can be used as complexing agents for trivalent iron. Furthermore, when preparing the etching baths, instead of ready-made concentrated hydrogen peroxide solutions, solid substances can be used which split off hydrogen peroxide when they are introduced into acidic solutions. In this sense one can use sodium peroxide, barium peroxide, addition compounds of hydrogen peroxide with urea and the like. In the following three examples of etching solutions according to the invention are given, without it being said that the concept of the invention is essentially restricted to these baths. Example i water 100 cc, iron sulfate 100 cc, 10 cc, potassium bromide 100 cc, sulfuric acid conc. 50 cc, hydrogen peroxide 300/100 cc. Example 2 Water 100 cc, iron sulfate 309, sulfuric acid conc. 20 cc, sodium acetate 30 g, urea hydrogen peroxide 50 g.
Etching solutions according to the invention; have the following advantages: Etching reliefs can be obtained from homogeneously hardened halogen silver colloid layers, whose hardening is so high that they do not even dissolve in boiling water or let it swell. When such layers are etched, the silver-containing colloid dissolves even in the silver poorest areas without any annoying bleaching notice is. On the other hand, if the etching solutions according to the invention are used only moderately hardened colloid layers, such as those with a melting point between 5o to 8o ° C, then another advantage of the new baths appears. Even moderately hardened layers show in spite of their low melting point New baths have no tendency to swell or soften, so that they are against mechanical ones Remaining insensitive to stress. This phenomenon is due to the fact that mixtures, which contain hydrogen peroxide and ferrous salts, for their part on non-hardened ones Colloid parts act like a hardening agent, the stronger the higher the pH of the solution is. When using the etching relief process, where the unresolved the remaining halogen silver layer would be subjected to a second development Softening of the layer is particularly disadvantageous. However, if you have the relief after the Process described here 'generated, then a brief treatment of the whole is sufficient Layer in an alkaline intermediate bath or in an i o / o solution of caustic soda or caustic potash, possibly with the addition of small amounts of potassium bromide. This will make the in the relief still existing remnants of the etching bath brought to a higher PH, and the Sufficient hardening is given to relief. The previously known acidic hydrogen peroxide baths do not show these properties at all.
As for the use of solid and acidic solution, hydrogen peroxide As far as separating substances are concerned, their advantage is that they are essential are less subject to decomposition than hydrogen peroxide solutions. As a result, the dosage can be carried out in a reliable manner when approaching, and It is also possible to partially exhausted baths by adding the solid hydrogen peroxide regenerating compounds that split off easily, if one is about to use these substances used in tablet form.
The described advantages of the etching baths according to the invention occur in all areas of concentration in appearance, if you compare them with the previously known Compares solutions with approximately the same molar composition. The advanced The effect is independent of the total amounts of the individual components in can be applied to a specific case. The variation of some or all of the components allows the strength of the etching power in a manner familiar to any person skilled in the art to coordinate the respective hardening state of the colloid layer to be processed.
The advantages of the new bathrooms always have an effect, regardless of the effect how the metallic silver in the colioid layer was created. Nor does it matter in which phase of the manufacturing process or the Treatment and by what method the colloid layer was hardened, which Layer thickness it has or what kind of surface it is applied to is, as long as this in turn is only resistant to the bathroom itself.
As a result of the reliable operation of the new bathrooms, it will be possible the etching of the colloid layers containing image silver for a considerably extended To make a range of different applications usable than before. You can with the Etching process of direct photographic recordings or copies in halftone, line or grid-style colloid reliefs that can be used in a known manner let, e.g. B. for Imbibitions- and suction processes with dyes or uncolored Components of colored fabrics, for stereotypical or galvanoplastic impressions, for hot or cold embossing, for the production of prints in portrait, flat or Gravure printing processes in which the resulting etched relief is printed directly should, for the creation of printable reliefs by celluloid etching. The etched reliefs but can also be used purely photographic, z. B. for the Production of reversal positives or negatives of all kinds, as master copies, for Duplicate negatives or positives and for sound recording and playback. The photographic application is of course also for the purposes of cinematography useful.
