Dabei kommen
Chloridschmelzen zur Anwendung, in denen auf i Mol Alkalichlorid mehr als i Mol
Aluminiumchlorid enthalten ist. Das Metall wird bei diesem Verfahren schwammförmig'
oder in dendritischen Kristallen abgeschieden. Im besten Fall wurden unter besonderen
Bedingungen einige Millimeter dicke Niederschläge erzielt.Process for the electrowinning of aluminum It is known
To produce aluminum from aluminum chloride; however, so far this has only been done for temperature ranges
suggested that are well below the melting point of aluminum. Come with it
Chloride melts for use in which there is more than one mole of alkali metal chloride on one mole
Aluminum chloride is included. The metal becomes spongy in this process'
or deposited in dendritic crystals. At best, they were under special
Conditions a few millimeters thick precipitation achieved.
It has now been found that above the melting point of aluminum, preferably at 670 to 730 °, aluminum chloride can be used as a starting material for the electrolytic production of the metal if salt mixtures are used as the electrolyte in which there is sufficient alkali chloride to remove all of the aluminum chloride to bind complex, e.g. B: as KAI 04. Such complexes have a surprisingly low vapor pressure even at higher temperatures.
The binary mixtures of alkali metal chloride and aluminum chloride are of course not very suitable for electrolysis with insoluble anodes, because the melting point of the mixture rises very rapidly as the aluminum chloride depletes and the electrolyte can no longer be kept liquid without vigorous evaporation of the aluminum chloride. Much more suitable are ternary mixtures of aluminum chloride with the alkali chlorides or with alkali chloride and alkaline earth chloride, eg. B. K Cl-A1 C13-Na Cl: K Cl-Al C13 -Li Cl: K Cl-Al C13-Mg cl ,. Since of all the complex compounds of A1 C13 the one with K Cl is the most temperature-resistant, it is useful; Potassium chloride should be used as an essential component of the electrolyte: In all of these systems, mixing gaps occur which only close at temperatures above 800 °. If one proceeds from the binary system KC1-AICIs and sets the weight ratio K Cl : Al C13 = x and the content of NaCl, Li Cl or Mg C12 in percent by weight in each case = y, then the maximum content of y can be is exceeded, segregation occurs approximately from 67o to 700 ° specify for 'the temperature range by the following relations: for NaCl between io and 400/0: y = 50 to 109 x 20 +, Li Cl between 5 and 400/0: y = 55.6 'log: r + 5, for -'IgCl2 between io and 40%: io-g y = 4.26 log x. + I', 28. In the presence of NaCl or alkaline earth chloride, the miscibility gap merges into the area of the disintegration characterized by the evaporation of A1 C13 or, respectively. in the area of solid waste.
Such electrolytes would be economically better in which besides
a high concentration of AI CI3 also a higher content of aii Na C1 or Li C1
would be possible without segregation or significant increase in the 'vapor pressure, since
such melts do not unearth so quickly and have better conductivity.

.It has now been found that the miscibility gaps in the ternary stones can be reduced to a lower temperature level by adding a fourth component, so that the salt mixtures with a high 11 Cl3 content suitable for electrolysis at the working temperature mentioned are greatly expanded. The fourth component is suitable for both alkali and alkaline earth chlorides. The effect is different depending on the type and length of the additive. Examples

The conductivity of the melts is increased in particular by Li Cl. The effect of an addition of lithium fluoride must be even greater. Because of the high melting point, one is forced to limit the addition to small amounts. The presence of Mg ions in the melt acts as a buffer to prevent the co-deposition of harmful alkali metals. It was found that in melts with 46.3% A1 C13, 33.33% 0/0 K Cl, 2.97% Li C1 and 7.4% Mg C12 the limiting current density is higher than 2 Amp / cm = and the polarization voltage at DK = i amps / cm2 and 700 ° = 2.33 volts. .
