Description
Process for regulating the cementation effect of cyanides containing Cement baths It is known that objects made of iron, steel and the like are immersed in them cement in molten baths containing cyanides. Here finds an immigration of carbon or nitrogen into the surface of the immersed Subject, which depends on the decomposition of the cyanide.
Such cementation baths have the disadvantage that their cementation effect wears off relatively quickly. The weakening of the cementation effect of the baths has the serious disadvantage that a uniform cementation in the long run can only be achieved with great difficulty, not infrequently but not at all, and the baths have to be replaced relatively often by fresh baths. With the even Cementation of larger quantities of iron objects is evident when adhering to the same working procedure with regard to temperature and treatment time that the Degree of cementation depends on the order in which it is inserted is, as the first treated good has a different degree of orientation than that the second batch etc.
Attempts have been made to alleviate this inconvenience by fresh cyanide is added to the bath in certain periods of time, around the initial level to approximately maintain cyanide. But in this case too, it became clear more or less rapid wear off.
When using salt baths with calcium cyanamide as a cementing agent Means are based on the finding that, despite the addition of fresh cyanamide a decrease in the effect can be observed, already suggested to increase it the duration of action of cyanamide is the regular addition of small amounts of an alkaline earth cyanide to undertake or to allow such a bath to be formed. The effect of the additives is attributed to the fact that this results in contamination of the bath Additives, e.g. B. as skimmable slag, brought to the deposition and continue cementing properties are given to the bath.
However, it has surprisingly been found that the decrease in the effects of the cementing baths in question on the formation of alkaline substances during the decomposition of the cyanide, e.g. B. sodium cyanide or barium cyanide, and the alkaline substances formed have a braking effect on the decomposition of the cyanide required to achieve the cementing effect, in such a way that the braking effect is increased as the formation of the alkaline substances increases, possibly in such a way that the decomposition of the Cy anids is so largely held back that a satisfactory cementation is no longer possible at all, although the amount of cyanide present in the bath is still sufficient for this. Based on these new findings, it is therefore possible to SSE the decomposition process of Cyanide in gewünschem '. \ I and to regulate with certainty int which in the decomposition of the cyanide forming the cementing disabling alkaline substances in the extent that they form, or to the extent that they develop a disruptive effect on the cementing process, are rendered harmless, what 'z. B. can be done by converting them into non-alkaline or less alkaline substances. -This conversion of the alkaline substances into less alkaline or non-alkaline substances can be effected in the most varied of ways. A technically easily feasible 'way consists in adding compounds of such elements to the molten bath, the cyanides of which decompose more easily under the working conditions than the cementing cyanide present in the bath, e.g. B. strontium chloride, to a sodium cyanide bath.
For this it is advantageous to stick to the order sodium, potassium, Barium, Strontium, C alcium, lIagnesium, Cer in such a way that one compounds in each case such members of this series are added to by the cyanide present in the bath Sequence are arranged, for example such that one barium cyanide as the cyanide salts of z. B. Strontium and / or others in the order admitted members subordinate to strontium. Sodium and potassium cvanides are in equated to this order.
.To suppress the dissociation of the interfering substances you can also not or less basic acting fusible compounds from Add the cation of the cvanid present in the bath. .
Such substances are expediently added in the form of their salts, - Advantageously those with low melting points, such as. B. Chlorides. The weaker The more alkaline the bases of these salts are, the more they reduce the stabilizing properties Effect of the bases resulting from the cyanides serving as cementing agents, e.g. B. sodium cvanide. So you can z. B. by the addition of compounds of the Magnesium or calcium has the stabilizing effect dez z. B. from sodium cyanide or barium yanide forming basic substances almost entirely or to a very large extent Save dimensions. This can cause the decomposition of the cyanide so quickly runs that during certain periods of time, relatively high concentrations of Decomposition products come to act on the objects to be cemented. -At Application of e.g. B. sodium cvanide as a cementing agent and of e.g. strontium or barium compounds as additives also find an acceleration of the Decomposition process instead, but to a much lesser extent than when using from Z. B. magnesium or calcium compounds. As a result, one is able to by using e.g. B. sodium cyanide as a cementing agent and by adding from Z. B. barium chloride cementing with relatively small amounts of cyanide to carry out and still the cementing process for a longer period of time in the desired Way to maintain. By suitable combination of the compounds to be added, E.g. of strontium or barium salts, the decomposition of the cyanide succeeds completely to regulate as desired and thereby the immigration of nitrogen and carbon to influence in the desired manner.
One can also anticipate the dissociation of the gradually forming, stabilizing acting alkaline substances by increasing the content of salts of the relevant Push back bases. For example, when using barium cyanide as a cementing agent the barium olide or barium carbonate formed during its decomposition wholly or partially prevent their stabilizing effect by preventing their dissociation by adding fusible salts of the same bases, e.g. B. barium chloride, pushes back.
The addition of the stabilizing effect of the alkaline substances influencing substances happens according to the invention approximately to the extent that the alkaline substances form in the molten bath, for which purpose they are gradually evened out or add it to the melting bath in very small doses or add it in stages. It is advisable to use the addition of these substances in connection with the one to be renewed Cementing agent before, at the same time advantageously filling the bath with it and thus also replaces adhesion losses.
Beispiele i. According to a particular embodiment of the invention, you can Melt bath to avoid a too fast running decomposition Add alkaline substances to the cyanide as stabilizers from the outset and by the gradual addition of agents which render the alkaline substances harmless make them z. B. convert into non-alkaline or less alkaline substances, prevent the stabilization from assuming undesirable or harmful dimensions. For example, by deliberately adding alkali, e.g. B. barium oxide, achieve a slowing down of the cyanide decomposition and this during the implementation of cementations by the gradual addition of z. B. strontium chloride on the same Hold level. Examples i. A molten bath consisting of 50 parts of barium chloride and 25 parts Sodium chloride and 25 parts of potassium chloride and 5 to 10 parts of sodium cyanide have been added, leaves in its cementing effect due to the formation of barium oxide and barium carbonate soon after. If you add more amounts to the melt pool Sodium cyanide, this increases the effectiveness of the melt only slightly but not brought to the previous efficiency. By adding strontium chloride alone, in the presence of sufficient amounts of decomposed cyanide, e.g. B. from 5 ° / o and above, the cementation effect can be brought back to the old level. If the cyanide content has fallen significantly below 5% during use, so it is advantageous to add new amounts of cyanide with the strontium chloride.
To regenerate the melt of the above composition, daily 3 to 5 of the contents of the crucible with a mixture of i part of strontium chloride, which is to supplement the consumed salt and to maintain the composition of the melt about 7 parts of barium chloride and, if necessary, some alkali metal chloride has added, displaced.
A melt of 70 parts of barium chloride, 10 parts of strontium chloride, 10 parts alkali chloride and 10 parts sodium vanide decompose during cementation normal temperatures relatively quickly. Be used to slow down the decomposition at the beginning about 3 to 5 parts of barium olide or 5 to 10 parts of barium carbonate are added. To keep the molten bath permanently effective, one sets z. B. daily a mixture as indicated in Example i.
A melt, as described in example i, can be used to preserve For effectiveness, instead of strontium chloride, only barium chloride to suppress it cause the dissociation of the alkaline substances that are formed. In this case it is necessary to add larger amounts of barium chloride than the sum of the barium and strontium salts in example i. The cyahid also becomes here to the same extent supplements as it is consumed.
The implementation of the cementing process according to the invention offers Advantages of several kinds. Once it is achieved through suppression or cancellation the stabilizing effect of the decomposition formed during the cementing process alkaline substances to effectively maintain the cement bath for a long time, to regulate this effectiveness also in the desired sense and losses of costly Cementants -to be avoided. It was like that B. possible, a weld pool several To keep it in operation for weeks without its effectiveness deteriorating, by that one z. B. every day the alkaline stabilizers that are formed Injected neutralizing salts together with cyanides and so the melt pool replenished. Then, however, with the help of the process, cement layers are obtained, such as they have so far reached such depths with the same thickness of the glass-hard layer at complete Absence of overcarburization with the same graduality and evenness of the transition and not preserved with the same reliability in molten baths have been.
