Description

Process for the production of swellable clays is known to come in nature clays that have the property of relatively large amounts of To be able to absorb water without them going into the liquid state, rather solidify into a gelatinous mass, which is due to the special swelling capacity such tone is based. Such swellable clays known under the name bentonite but only occur in isolated places on earth, while on the other hand the need on such clays for various purposes, e.g. B. the production of porcelain and other ceramic objects, for foundry purposes, in cosmetic and the food industry is huge.

There was therefore no lack of attempts to produce such swellable clays Processing of less swellable clays, e.g. B. by fine grinding, drying under special conditions, or by treatment with acids and alkalis, the later should be removed again, or by adding inorganic or organic Reagents of various kinds, e.g. B. Soda, phosphates and the like. To produce artificially. With a11 these means, however, only unsatisfactory results can be achieved. The particular disadvantage of these methods is that by using non-clay substances contaminate the natural clays, which, as has been shown, can no longer be completely removed, so that the use artificial bentonites produced in this way, e.g. B. in cosmetics and the food industry, Limits are drawn or at least their use in many cases questionable appears. The new method of the present invention works therefore from the thought of being additives to natural ordinary clay only to use native additives, as they are already contained in the clay, these but in a form that requires clays to swell particularly well. Extensive experiments have now shown that pure silica in the finest division, as it can be produced as aerosol, in a suitable amount of natural clay added, gives excellent results in terms of swellability.

The process is also extremely economical because it is not chemical Preparation and cleaning of the clays is necessary, but the dried and ground clays are easily mixed with the silica to be added can. The tests have shown that the small additions of 0.5 to ro ° / o of silicas, based on the weight of the clay, are sufficient in all cases, indifferent the origin of the natural clay used.

Since silica is also contained in natural clay, the Use of such artificially produced bentonite does not have any disadvantages.
