Description
Production of film-forming aqueous suspensions of high molecular weight, Sulfur-containing condensation products It is known that by reacting multiply negatively substituted organic compounds, e.g. B. Dihaloparaffins, with inorganic, water-soluble polysulphides - high molecular weight, sulfur-containing Condensation products are obtained, which are similar in their properties to rubber. If one takes the condensation in an aqueous medium with the addition of inorganic dispersants, such as B. freshly precipitated magnesium hydroxide, and possibly with courage organic protective colloids, the condensation products are obtained in one finely divided suspension in water, hereinafter referred to as latex for short. This latex is washed out, coagulated by treatment with -acid and through subsequent rolling into rubber-like skins, which are used for production soft rubber-like articles are used.
It is also known that the obtained in the manner described Condensation products are extremely solvent-resistant; they are through the Most organic liquids neither dissolved nor swelled and have as a result this solvent resistance has already been widely used in technology. A general use of these products is precisely because of this solvent resistance Limits are set insofar as up to now one had to limit oneself to these products in the solid form obtained by coagulation for processing and application bring and no way existed to consider them by making solutions Spreadable pastes and to use cements for painting purposes or for coatings or impregnations.
It made sense to use the originally received ones for these areas of application Use latex. The use of the product prepared in the manner described above Latex as such, however, is opposed to the fact that it does not succeed from this Latex cohesive by simply letting it dry out in the cold or in the heat Layers or films. Rather, this latex is created when it dries out more or more cracked, incoherent and badly sticky> masses that also due to their content of inorganic dispersants, e.g. B. magnesium hydroxide, are not necessarily waterproof, acid-resistant and pore-free.
It has been found that a latex that can be used as a paint, impregnation and adhesive, ie that forms a cohesive film, can be produced in the following way: The latex produced and washed out in the normal known manner is carefully diluted with dilute aqueous solution, avoiding coagulation , non-oxidizing acid. until a pH value of .l to 6.5 is reached. Upon completion of this treatment with acid, a neutralizing agent, e.g. B. Dilute, aqueous ammonia, added until the pH is up again; until S has risen. The latex obtained in this way is then washed out with water by decanting several times. It has been found that the latex does not generally coagulate when acidified up to PH = 4. However, it is advisable not to go beyond pH = 6 in order to avoid unnecessary consumption of acids and neutralizing agents. If the addition of the neutralizing agent is omitted, the acidified latex coagulates easily when it is washed out. Example i Zoo g of an aqueous suspension of a high molecular weight condensation product prepared from ethylene chloride and sodium tetrasulphide in the presence of magnesium hydroxide as a dispersing agent with a dry content of about i 2 oo and an ash content of about 20 oo, calculated on dry matter, are slowly stirred at room temperature with: 1o ccm of 2N hydrochloric acid solution. This results in a pH value of 6. Now ioccm o, 2N ammonia solution are added dropwise, the pH value rising to 7.5. The suspension is allowed to sit, the liquid above the condensation product is drawn off and washed twice with 100 ounces of water each time by decanting. The latex present after this treatment now has the film-forming properties mentioned. It contains only about 50,000 ashes, calculated on the dry matter.
Other acids can also be used in place of hydrochloric acid with the exception of oxidizing acids, such as. B. nitric acid or chromic acid. The ammonia can be caused by other neutralizing substances, such as alkalis or basic salts.
The cohesive, crack-free film produced from the latex produced according to the invention is distinguished by good chemical and physical properties. Because the product contains almost no inorganic impurities (dispersants) after the treatment described above, it is to a high degree impermeable to water, even to aqueous acids, e.g. B. highly concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid, since precisely these dispersants are sensitive to moisture, aqueous acid, etc. and can have a detrimental effect on the internal cohesion of the film. It is also extremely resistant to the effects of organic substances; it is Z. B. swell-proof and solvent-proof against aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, fuels, solvents, oils, etc. It is also highly resistant to aging, weathering and insensitive to ozone. The product shows the same high quality properties as the plastic mass obtained from a normal latex by coagulation with acid.
: .It has become possible in the manner described, through use the aqueous suspension paints to be obtained according to the present process, Produce coatings, impregnations, etc. with the properties already mentioned. The suspension can be used either on its own or in combination or as a mixture with other materials, such as dyes, fillers, etc. and can use them in a similar way; as is the case with the high polymer, rubber-like, sulfur-containing ones Condensation products is already known through a heat treatment that is carried out with or can be made without additives, further solidify. :.
