Abstract
Description
This invention relates to a lubricant composition (or lubricant composition) containing a combination of additives that provide antiwear properties and the antiwear additive combination contained therein.
It is well known to include an antiwear additive in lubricating oils, such as engine oils. Wear occurs primarily as a result of two metal surfaces rubbing against each other, i.e. in boundary lubrication areas such as those found in valve gears in internal combustion engines. The antiwear agent is believed to act to provide a protective film over the metal surfaces. One well-known class of antiwear additives is the metal alkyl phosphate, particularly zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate ("ZDDP"). Generally, ZDDP is used in treating amounts of 1 to 2 weight percent based on the total weight of the lubricant, resulting in a phosphorus content in the lubricant typically in the range of 0.05 to 0.15 weight percent and a zinc content of 0.1 to 0.2 weight percent.
In recent years there has been increasing concern that lubricant ash levels such as those produced by the zinc in ZDDP contribute to particulate emissions from internal combustion engines. There is also concern that the phosphorus from the lubricant tends to poison catalysts used in catalytic converters, preventing them from being fully effective. However, any reduction in ZDDP treatment levels has the disadvantage of reducing the anti-wear properties of the lubricant.
There is therefore a need for an effective anti-wear additive with reduced zinc and phosphorus contents.
We have found that a phosphorus-free organomolybdenum compound and an ashless sulfur-containing organophosphorus compound work synergistically to provide improved antiwear performance when used in a lubricant composition. By using this combination of compounds, it is possible to achieve the same or better performance performance than that achieved with ZDDP with significantly lower phosphorus amounts.
It is known that sulphur-containing organic phosphorus compounds are used as "extreme pressure compounds" in high performance applications such as constant velocity joint greases. It is also known to use sulphur-containing organic compounds of heavy metals such as molybdenum, tungsten and lead in such applications. For example, GB-A-2 255 346 describes an additive for lubricating greases used in constant velocity joints, which comprises in combination molybdenum sulphide dialkyldithiocarbamate, zinc dithiophosphate, an extreme pressure compound of the sulphur-phosphorus series and lead dialkyldithiocarbamate. It is stated that the presence of lead compound is indispensable to achieve the desired performance.
Die bevorzugten Metalle sind Kupfer und Zink.US-A-4 648 985 describes a lead-free extreme pressure additive, generally for asphalt-based lubricants, which uses organic phosphate in combination with copper or molybdenum compounds selected from carboxylate, phosphate, thiophosphate and dithiocarbamate, optionally with metal-free thiocarbamate or in combination with metal thiocarbamate (numerous metals are described). The preferred metals are copper and zinc.
Organic phosphorus compounds are also used as ashless dispersants. For example, EP-A-0 516 461 describes a dispersant additive for lubricating oils which shows improved compatibility with elastomeric sealing material comprising in combination metal dihydrocarbon dithiocarbamate or dithiocarbamate and phosphorylated ashless dispersant. Various metal compounds including molybdenum dithiophosphate are described.
Viele Metalle einschließlich Molybdän, Zink und Blei sind erwähnt.GB-A-1 373 588 describes an antiwear antioxidant additive combination comprising metal dialkyldithiocarbamate and/or metal alkyl, aryl or aralkyldithiophosphate and metal free phosphorus compound selected from sulphurized sperm oil esterified with dithiophosphate, sulphurized terpene esterified with dithiophosphate, sulphurized and phosphatized sperm oil and phosphorus polysulphide. Many metals including molybdenum, zinc and lead are mentioned.
Das Schmierfett umfaßt Basisöl, Verdickungsmittel, organische Molybdänverbindung ausgewählt aus Molybdändithiocarbamat und Molybdändithiophosphat und aschefreies Additiv ausgewählt aus aschefreien Dithiophosphaten und aschefreien Dithiocarbamaten.EP-A-566 326 is an earlier European patent application with a filing date of 8 April 1993 and a publication date of 20 October 1993. Accordingly, it is part of the prior art for the present invention only in terms of novelty and only in respect of the following contracting states: DE, DE, ES, FR, GB, IT, LU, NL, SE. It describes a lubricant composition, specifically a grease for reducing wobble in constant velocity joints located near the longitudinal axis. The grease comprises base oil, thickener, organic molybdenum compound selected from molybdenum dithiocarbamate and molybdenum dithiophosphate and ashless additive selected from ashless dithiophosphates and ashless dithiocarbamates.
Gemäß einem Aspekt liefert die vorliegende Erfindung eine Schmiermittelzusammensetzung, die ein Basisöl mit einer Viskosität von 3 bis 26 cSt (mm /s) bei 100ºC und eine Antiverschleißadditivkombination umfaßt, dieIn one aspect, the present invention provides a lubricant composition comprising a base oil having a viscosity of 3 to 26 cSt (mm /s) at 100°C and an antiwear additive combination which
(a) öllösliche oder öldispergierbare phosphorfreie Organomolybdänverbindung, wobei die Organogruppe der Molybdänverbindung ausgewählt ist aus Carbamat-, Carboxylat- und Xanthatgruppen und Mischungen derselben, wobei die Gruppen mit einer Kohlenwasserstoffgruppe und/oder einem oder mehreren Heteroatomen substituiert sein können, und(a) oil-soluble or oil-dispersible phosphorus-free organomolybdenum compound, wherein the organo group of the molybdenum compound is selected from carbamate, carboxylate and xanthate groups and mixtures thereof, wherein the groups may be substituted by a hydrocarbon group and/or one or more heteroatoms, and
(b) aschefreie schwefelhaltige Organophosphorverbindung ausgewählt aus(b) ashless sulfur-containing organophosphorus compound selected from
(i) Phosphorothiolothionat mit der Formel (i) Phosphorothiolothionic acid having the formula
in der R&sub5;, R&sub6; und R&sub7; jeweils unabhängig eine unsubstituierte verzweigte oder geradkettige Kohlenwasserstoffgruppe oder eine verzweigte oder geradkettige Kohlenwasserstoffgruppe sind, die mit einer oder mehreren funktionalisierten Gruppen oder Heteroatomen substituiert ist,in which R₅, R₆ and R₇ are each independently an unsubstituted branched or straight chain hydrocarbon group or a branched or straight chain hydrocarbon group substituted with one or more functionalized groups or heteroatoms,
(ii) Phosphorothionat mit der Formel (ii) Phosphorothionate with the formula
in der R&sub8;, R&sub9; und R&sub1;&sub0; wie zuvor für R&sub5;, R&sub6; und R&sub7; definiert sind, undin which R8;, R9; and R₁₀ are as previously defined for R5;, R6; and R7; and
(iii) einer Mischung aus (i) und (ii) umfaßt.(iii) a mixture of (i) and (ii).
Furthermore, we have surprisingly found that compounds (a) and (b), when used in combination with reduced amounts of a selected zinc dithiophosphate, act synergistically to provide better wear protection than is obtained using a comparable amount (i.e., an amount providing a similar total phosphorus content) of the zinc thiophosphate alone.
Accordingly, in a preferred lubricant composition, the combination includes in addition to (a) and (b) a zinc thiophosphate compound (c) selected from one or more of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, zinc diaryldithiophosphate, zinc alkylaryldithiophosphate and zinc arylalkyldithiophosphate. This provides the advantage that the organomolybdenum can replace part of the zinc thiophosphate compound used in the lubricant compositions, with the effect of reducing the phosphorus content in the lubricant without affecting the anti significantly reduce the wear performance of the lubricant, which in fact is even increased.
The organomolybdenum compound may comprise a molybdenum carbamate, preferably a dicarbamate and in particular a dithiocarbamate (MoDTC), whose organo group(s) is/are substituted with hydrocarbon groups and/or one or more heteroatoms, provided that the organo group chosen results in an organomolybdenum compound which is oil-soluble or oil-dispersible, preferably oil-soluble.
However, MoDTC is known to decompose when heated during use to form decomposition products that include free amine and carbon disulfide. Both of these products attack copper present in engine bearings. Bearing wear is particularly unacceptable because repair involves complete disassembly of the engine. Carbon disulfide tends to evaporate relatively quickly and does not pose a particular problem. However, even small amounts of free amine can cause damage.
We have found that the synergisms described above extend not only to carbamates of molybdenum, but also to molybdenum compounds which are nitrogen-free and therefore do not decompose to free amine. A preferred organomolybdenum compound is also free of sulfur.
Accordingly, in a preferred combination of (a) and (b) together with optionally (c), the organomolybdenum compound is nitrogen-free. It is preferably selected from carboxylate and xanthate or mixtures thereof, where their organo group(s) may be substituted with hydrocarbon group, again with the proviso that the organo group selected leads to an organomolybdenum compound which is oil-soluble or oil-dispersible, preferably oil-soluble.
The preferred organomolybdenum compound comprises a carboxylate. Such compounds not only contain neither nitrogen nor phosphorus, but are also relatively inexpensive and contain a higher molybdenum content than the more complex compounds. As will be described in more detail, it is believed that the effective additive content is determined by the metal content. Thus, compared to molybdenum dithiocarbamate, only about a third of the amount of, for example, molybdenum 2-ethylhexanoate needs to be used.
In another aspect, the present invention provides an antiwear agent comprising a combination of (a) organomolybdenum compound as described above, (b) ashless organophosphorus compound as described above, and optionally (c) zinc dithiophosphate as described above.

The amounts of each of the antiwear additives (a) and (b) to be included in the lubricant composition of the present invention are the amounts effective to provide the desired level of antiwear performance while reducing the amount of phosphorus to an acceptable level.
Without wishing to be limited to any particular theory, it is believed that the anti-wear properties of the organomolybdenum compound (a) are generally due to the presence of molybdenum. Thus, when determining the amount of organomolybdenum compound to be incorporated into the lubricant composition, the desired amount of molybdenum must first be determined. Preferably, the amount of molybdenum contained in the lubricant composition is 0.001 to 0.5 wt.%, more preferably 0.005 to 0.2 wt.% and most preferably 0.01 to 0.05 weight percent based on the total weight of the lubricant composition. The amount of organomolybdenum compound corresponding to this amount depends on the type of compound chosen.
When the organomolybdenum compound is a dithiocarbamate, the amount of the compound used depends on the molecular weight of the R groups contained in the thiocarbamate groups as defined in formula (I) above. Typically, the amount of molybdenum dithiocarbamate used is preferably 0.01 to 3.0 wt%, more preferably 0.02 to 2.0 wt%, and most preferably 0.05 to 1.0 wt%, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition.
When the organomolybdenum compound is a carboxylate, the amount of compound used depends on the molecular weight of the carboxylate group used. For example, when the carboxylate is 2-ethylhexanoate, the amount of molybdenum carboxylate used is preferably 0.005 to 2.5 wt%, more preferably 0.025 to 1.0 wt%, and most preferably 0.05 to 0.25 wt%, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition.
When the organomolybdenum compound is a xanthate, the amount of compound used depends on the molecular weight of the hydrocarbon groups, e.g. alkyl groups, contained in the xanthate groups. Typically, however, the amount of molybdenum xanthate used is 0.003 to 2.0 wt%, more preferably 0.01 to 0.7 wt%, and most preferably 0.03 to 0.2 wt%, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition.
Similarly, it is believed that the anti-wear properties of the ashless organophosphorus compound (b) and the zinc thiophosphate, when used, are generally due to the presence of the phosphorus. Thus, when determining the amounts of these compounds to be incorporated, the desired amount of phosphorus in the lubricant composition must first be determined. Preferably, the total amount of phosphorus contained in the lubricant composition is Phosphorus 0.001 to 0.3 wt.%, in particular 0.01 to 0.2 wt.% and most preferably 0.02 to 0.1 wt.%, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition.
The amount of ashless organophosphorus compound and zinc thiophosphate compound (if used) corresponding thereto depends on the relative proportions of these compounds and the molecular weights of the particular compounds chosen. Typically, however, the amount of ashless organophosphorus compound incorporated into the lubricant composition is preferably from 0.01 to 3.0 wt%, more preferably from 0.1 to 2.0 wt%, and most preferably from 0.2 to 1.0 wt%, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition, and the amount of zinc thiophosphate compound is preferably from 0.01 to 3.0 wt%, more preferably from 0.1 to 2.0 wt%, and most preferably from 0.2 to 1.0 wt%, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition.
The ratio of organomolybdenum compound (a) to ashless organophosphorus compound (b) is preferably such that the weight ratio of molybdenum to phosphorus in the lubricant composition due to the presence of compounds (a) and (b) is 1:50 to 100:1, especially 1:10 to 20:1 and most preferably 1:1 to 10:1. The weight ratio of phosphorus derived from ashless organophosphorus compound (b) to zinc thiophosphate compound (c) (if used) is preferably 10:1 to 1:20, especially 5:1 to 1:15 and most preferably 1:1 to 1:10.
The base oil used in the lubricant composition of the invention may be any base oil having a viscosity suitable for use of the lubricant in an engine, e.g. as a crankcase oil or gear oil. Thus, the base oil may be, for example, a conventionally refined mineral oil, an oil derived from coal, tar or shale, a vegetable oil, an animal oil, a hydrocracked oil or a synthetic oil, or a mixture of two or more of these types of oils. Examples of synthetic oils include hydroisomerized paraffins, poly-α-olefins, polybu tenes, alkylbenzenes, polyglycols, esters such as polyol esters or dibasic carboxylic acid esters, alkylene oxide polymers and silicone oils. The viscosity of the base oil will depend on the intended use but will generally be in the range of 3 to 26 cSt (mm²/s) at 100°C, preferably 3 to 20 cSt (mm²/s) at 100°C. The antiwear additive compounds (a) and (b), and (c), if used, may be mixed directly with the base oil but for ease of handling and incorporation of the compounds into the base oil they are preferably in the form of an additive concentrate comprising the additive compound or mixture of both compounds contained in a carrier fluid. The carrier fluid is typically an oil and may, for example, be any of the oils mentioned above in the description of the base oil. Alternatively, it may be an organic solvent, for example, naphtha, benzene, toluene, xylene and the like. The carrier fluid should be compatible with the base oil of the lubricant composition, but is otherwise preferably inert. Generally, the concentrate will comprise from 10 to 90% by weight of additive(s), preferably from 30 to 70% by weight, with the balance being carrier fluid.
The lubricant composition of the present invention may also contain other additives which may be added directly to the base oil, added as a separate additive concentrate, or included in the concentrate of anti-wear additives. For example, if the lubricant is an engine oil, other additives which may be incorporated include one or more of detergent, dispersant, antioxidant, corrosion inhibitor, extreme pressure agent, antifoam agent, pour point depressant, and viscosity index improver. Such additives are well known and the selection of appropriate additives can be readily determined by those skilled in the art of lubricant formulation.
The lubricant composition can be used in any application in which the parts to be lubricated are subject to wear. It is particularly suitable for use as engine oil for internal combustion engines.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples.
A series of engine oils were formulated by blending organomolybdenum compound and ashless organophosphorus compound with a conventional engine oil formulation ("base case" oil) based on conventional refined mineral oil and containing standard engine oil additives except that ZDDP was omitted. The resulting engine oils were tested for valve timing wear by measuring camshaft wear and valve tappet seizure using an engine driven cylinder head test setup equivalent to the industry standard TU-3 engine test CEC L-38-T-87, this test method being available from the CEC Secretariat, 61, New Cavendish Street, London W1 8AB.
All results are shown in Table 1 below. All weight percentages refer to the weight of the fully formulated engine oil.
In der Tabelle 1 werden die folgenden Abkürzungen verwendet:The following abbreviations are used in Table 1:

Tabelle 1 Good results are indicated by a low value for camshaft wear and a high value for valve tappet seizure. From the results it can be seen that addition of organomolybdenum compound as the only antiwear additive shows only a small improvement in camshaft wear and some improvement in valve tappet seizure over the base case oil containing no antiwear additive. Similarly, addition of only organophosphorus compound produces some improvement in camshaft wear and valve tappet seizure. However, addition of both compounds produces significant antiwear improvement. Moreover, the improvement achieved is greater than that achieved using ZDDP, even when the total active ingredient content for the ZDDP-containing formulation (Example 1A) is higher than the inventive formulation. ulation (Example 1D). In addition, better results than with ZDDP alone were achieved when the organomolybdenum compound was 2-ethylhexanoate (Example 3E), with results only slightly worse than with dithiocarbamate (Example 3C) and achieved using only 0.07 wt% additive compound compared to 0.2 wt% in the case of dithiocarbamate. Table 1
An engine oil was formulated by adding the following anti-wear additives to a base case oil consisting of conventional engine oil based on conventionally refined mineral oil and containing various standard engine oil additives from ZDDP:
(a) 0,2 Gew.-% MOLYVAN 822 (Molybdändithiocarbamat wie in Beispiel 1)(a) 0.2 wt.% MOLYVAN 822 (molybdenum dithiocarbamate as in Example 1)
(b) 0,8 Gew.-% ECA 6330, ein Phosphorothiolothionat, angeboten von Exxon Chemical Company, und(b) 0.8 wt.% ECA 6330, a phosphorothiolothionic acid supplied by Exxon Chemical Company, and
(c) 1,0 Gew.-% PARANOX 14 (ZDDP wie in Beispiel 1).(c) 1.0 wt.% PARANOX 14 (ZDDP as in Example 1).
The amount of molybdenum contained in (a) was determined using ICP (inductively coupled plasma) analysis. The amount of phosphorus contained in each of (b) and (c) was determined using X-ray fluorescence analysis according to standard test AMS 86.002.
Comparison engine oils were formulated using the same base case oil and omitting one or more of the above antiwear additives (a), (b) and (c).
The resulting engine oils were tested for valve control wear by measuring valve tappet wear according to the standard industrial engine test VW 5106 Cam and Tappet Test (Procedure P-VW 5106), the test procedure being available from VW AG, Postfach 3180, Wolfsburg 1, Germany.
The resulting engine oils were tested for valve control wear by measuring valve tappet wear according to the standard industrial engine test VW 5106 Cam and Tappet Rig.
The results are shown in Table 2 below.
Tabelle 2 All weight percentages refer to the weight of the fully formulated engine oil. Table 2
The lower the valve tappet wear value, the better the anti-wear performance of the lubricant. Thus, the results show that at the same total phosphorus content, a significant improvement in anti-wear performance is achieved when the anti-wear agent is a combination of organomolybdenum compound, ashless organophosphorus compound and ZDDP.
