Description
The present invention relates to a display system in which control data is transmitted between a computer system and a display device.
The control data includes parameters for specifying the geometry and resolution of an image displayed in the display device. In a display system having a line-scanning display device such as a cathode ray tube (CRT), these parameters are determined by the speed and amplitudes of the horizontal and vertical scanning signals generated by electrical circuits for producing the raster scan in the display device. To generate the image, the scanning signals from a video source such as a computer system are synchronized to video signals by synchronization pulses (sync pulses) also generated by the video source.
Some displays can only operate in a single display mode according to a single set of parameters. Other displays can be configured to operate in any number of display modes, characterized by a different set of parameters. This latter is referred to herein as a multiple-mode display. In a display controlled by a computer system, it is desirable for the computer system to identify the type of display so that appropriate video and synchronization signals can be generated. Many examples of such computer systems, including the IBM PS 2 series, include a Video graphics adapter (VGA adapter) with an output for connecting the video and sync signals to a display device. The VGA adapter also responds logically to the manner in which the identification pins in the output connector are set when they are connected to the display device. The logic identifies the type of display device connected from these connectors to the VGA adapter.
No. 2,162,026 describes an example of a display system employing a multiple mode display device that receives video and sync signals from a computer system display adapter. The display device can operate in one of four display modes. The computer system can be instructed to output sync pulses of positive or negative polarity. Each polarity combination displays a different display mode. The display device includes decoding logic for configuring the display device to operate in a particular display mode in response to predetermined sync pulse polarities.
The disadvantage of the state-of-the-art display systems is that the state-of-the-art display interfaces can only identify a limited number of different display devices and thus generate appropriate control signals for them. This limitation arises because the number of contact pins available for device identification and control is limited by the physical shape of the output connector.
According to the present invention, there is now proposed a display device for connection to a display adapter circuit of a computer system, the display device comprising: means for generating a visual output in response to a plurality of data signals generated by the display adapter circuit, characterized in that the display device comprises: a memory for storing control data in the form of a plurality of control codes identifying the display device; and device logic means responsive to a command signal from the display adapter circuit for reading the control codes from the memory for transmission to the display adapter circuit. This has the advantage that the display system programming does not require updating each time a different display device is connected to the output port because the control data such as the signal timing requirements of any new display device can now be held in the form of digital control codes within the memory of the display device. Instead, the display adapter can now read the new timing requirements from the memory of the new display device for the purpose of generating the video and sync signals to properly drive the new display device.
Preferably, the display device comprises serial communication means for communicating the control code between the display device and the adapter circuit. This has the advantage that the display adapter circuit can use the serial communication to configure the device to operate in a desired display mode when the display device is a multiple mode display device.
Jetzt soll ein Beispiel für die vorliegende Erfindung beschrieben werden unter Bezugnahme auf die beiliegenden Zeichnungen; in diesen istAn example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which

Fig. 1 shows an example of a computer system with a display system having a CRT display device 88.
The computer system includes a central processing unit (CPU) 80 for executing programmed instructions. A bus architecture 86 provides a data transfer path between the CPU 80 and other components of the display system. A read only storage (ROS) 81 provides secure data storage. A random access memory 82 provides temporary data storage. Data communication to the main computer system 93 is accomplished via a communication adapter 85. An I/O adapter 84 allows data to be transferred between the bus architecture 86 and a peripheral device such as a magnetic disk file 83. A user can operate the computer system using a keyboard 91 connected to the bus architecture (86) via the keyboard adapter 90. The CRT display device 88 provides a visible output from the display system. A display adapter 92 generates video and sync signals at an output port 941 to enable the display device 88 to generate the visible output.
According to the present invention, the display device 88 includes a non-volatile memory (NVM) 9 for storing display information in the form of digital codes. The display information is sent between the display device 88 and the display adapter 92 over a serial link 3 controlled by the link logic 95. The serial link 3 is separate from the lines that carry the video and sync signals from the display adapter 92 to the display device. The link logic 95 is divided into the adapter logic 96 and the device logic 97. In operation, the adapter logic 96 initiates commands to both read and write data to the NVM 9 and the display logic 97 responds accordingly.
Der Adressenraum im NVM 9 unterteilt sich in einen anwenderspezifischen NVM 10 und einen Programm-NVM 11.Referring now to Fig. 2, the communication logic 95 will be described in more detail. The adapter logic 96 includes a device driver 1 for generating an instruction code 21 in response to a program instruction. A first serializer translates the instruction code 21 into an instruction bit stream 22 for a first line driver 41 to communicate with the device logic 97 over the serial link 3. The device logic 97 includes a second receiver 5 for capturing the instruction bit stream 22. A second deserializer 6 translates the instruction bit stream 22 back into the instruction code 21. An instruction decoder decodes the instruction code 21 into an NVM address 8. The address space in the NVM 9 is divided into an application-specific NVM 10 and a program NVM 11.
Der anwenderspezifische NVM-Speicher speichert verschiedene Sätze Taktparameter in Übereinstimmung mit unterschiedlichen Anzeigemodi der Anzeigevorrichtung ab.The custom NVM 10 contains identification codes for providing the display system with a specification of the display device 88 connected to the display adapter 92. Each identification code is stored at a different address location. The identification codes include encoded timing parameters to enable the display adapter 92 to generate appropriate video and sync signals. In particular, the timing parameters include sync pulse widths, active video periods, and blanking intervals. Preferably, the identification codes also include an encoded transfer parameter to indicate the maximum rate at which the device logic 97 can read or write data to the serial port 3. By reading the transfer parameter before issuing further commands, the adapter logic 96 can ensure that data is subsequently communicated between the display device 88 and the display adapter 92 at a rate compatible with both the adapter logic 96 and the device logic 97. Each clock parameter is stored in the form of a 16-bit information code. Fifteen bits of the command specify the values of the clock parameters and the sixteenth bit specifies the polarity. It must be recognized that lower order critical clock parameters may also be stored in the form of 8-bit codes or less. The custom NVM memory stores different sets of clock parameters in accordance with different display modes of the display device.
The program NVM 12 stores control data for instructing a display on/off (I/O) circuit 12 to adjust drive signals generated by the drive circuit 13 in the display device. Examples of such drive signals directly affect the height, width and brightness of the visible output from the display device 88. Each control code is stored at a different address. By instructing the display I/O circuit 12 with appropriate control codes, the visible output of the display device 88 can be switched between different display modes under the control of a computer program. Preferably, the program NVM 11 also stores control codes for instructing the display I/O circuit 12 to generate pattern codes representative of the drive signal magnitudes at predetermined nodes of the drive circuit 13. It is noted here that such control codes may be used to automate the diagnostic method for testing the operation of the display device 88 after manufacture or repair.
When adapter logic 96 issues a read command, device logic 97 responds by placing an appropriate response code 23 on serial port 3. Response code 23 may be either an identification code 20 from the custom NVM or an example data code 19 from display I/O circuit 12, depending on the type of read command. To implement such a response, device logic 97 includes parity logic 14 for adding a parity bit to response code 23. A second serializer 15 translates response code 23 into a response bit stream 24. The response bit stream 24 is applied to the serial port 3 by a second line driver 16. In the display adapter 92, a first receiver 17 captures the response bit stream 24 on the serial port 3. A first deserializer 18 translates the captured response bit stream 24 back into the response code 23, which is decoded by the device driver 1.
The first serializer and the first deserializer of the adapter logic can be combined into a single integrated circuit module, and a similar module can be used to implement the second serializer and the second deserializer. The first line driver and the first receiver can also be integrated into a single integrated circuit module, and a similar driver/receiver module can be used to implement the second line driver and the second receiver.
The adapter logic 96 can be configured to accept a response from the device logic 97 in either "handshake" mode or "stream" mode. In "handshake" mode, the device logic 97 waits for the adapter logic to place an acknowledgement code on serial port 3 before sending the next response byte. In "stream" mode, the device logic 97 waits for the adapter logic to acknowledge receipt of a block of bytes of the response before sending the next block.
An example of the present invention has been described above in which display information is transmitted between the display adapter 92 and the display device 88 through the communication logic 95 with a serial port 3 that is separate from the lines that carry the video and sync signals from the display adapter 92 to the display device. Of course, it is clear that other communication connections and coding methods can be used. Furthermore, the The present invention is an example of a line scan display device. Of course, the present invention can also be applied to other display devices such as a liquid crystal display or a vector scan display device.
