Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for splitting laminated mineral blocks along an interface between two layers and to a device for carrying out the method according to the preambles of the appended claims 1 and 7.
The definition of laminated mineral blocks includes all types of solid minerals composed of a number of layers or laminates. These have been formed in the earth's soil over the ages and can be mined for various purposes, such as construction.
The invention is more particularly, but not exclusively, concerned with the splitting of mineral blocks consisting of slate, especially mica slate and clay slate. Accordingly, the invention will be described herein, for example, in connection with the splitting of mica slate in order to shed light on the various problems of the current art of splitting mineral blocks along an interface between two layers.
Mica schist is mined as large blocks, generally in an open mine, and these blocks are given a shape and form that is easy to handle, for example, for sawing. The mineral blocks of mica schist are composed of superimposed layers of material that are essentially parallel to each other. The mica schist is very hard, but it can be split along the interfaces between two layers, producing surfaces that are very attractive to the eye. This produces a surface with small undulations that is very decorative and produces different types of reflections and visual perceptions depending on the light falling on it and the angle at which the mica surface is viewed. This surface is called a split surface in common parlance.
One method of producing a so-called cleavage surface was as follows: spaced metal wedges were driven by hand with a hammer into the area between two layers substantially parallel to them. The laminated mineral block has a pronounced tendency to split along the interfaces between the two layers, so that driving wedges inward creates a fracture propagating between the two layers, which eventually separates the two layers completely, thus producing the two pieces of material each with a desired cleavage surface. A so-called splitting was carried out.
However, this method has several disadvantages, not only for the person who has to carry out the work. It requires a considerable amount of force to drive wedges into the slate block using a hammer, and the breaks must be made at relatively short intervals, which leads to a short effective working time per work cycle. The hammer blows on the wedges generate a high and unpleasant noise level, which requires soundproofing measures, and if not Such measures can result in injuries to the auditory system. Furthermore, a small cloud of quartz dust is generated at the point where the wedge is driven into the block with each blow, and since the person carrying out the blows has his head relatively close to this point, he cannot avoid inhaling some of the quartz dust. This has a detrimental effect on the person's health over a long period of time.
Another disadvantage of this splitting process is the relatively large amount of waste material that is produced. Unsightly marks are formed on the resulting split surfaces where the wedges have been driven into the block, which means that sawing must be carried out and a section of the edge later discarded. The use of wedges also results in very long lever arms when the fracture has spread relatively far into the block of material, with the lever arms increasing as the fracture spreads from the driving wedge to the opposite end of the block of material. These long lever arms lead to a latent risk of fractures forming across the two layers, so that the block of material is repeatedly subjected to cracks in this direction, meaning that parts or in some cases even the entire slate in question must be discarded.
The use of driving impact tools with wedges for splitting slate blocks is known, but it has been found that these increase the risk of the last-mentioned cracks because the driving impact tools are not handled with compensating forces and the necessary feeling when the wedges are struck by hand.
A method and apparatus of the kind mentioned in the introduction are known from GB-A-1 377 597, in which an apparatus for splitting slate by supplying water under pressure to a fracture located between two adjacent layers of slate is described. A block of material is placed in a housing having peripheral seals which create a liquid seal between the housing and the exterior so that a slight negative pressure is maintained around the block to make the splitting forces more effective. Furthermore, a porous foam of very low density is brought into direct contact with the block to be split inside the housing to reduce the leakages which will occur once the front created by the pressurized medium has reached one of the edges of the block to be split so that the lateral flow of medium in the separation between the two layers can be reduced. It is stated that the spreading of the pressure medium should be rapid, to achieve this it is necessary that relatively high pressures be used when applying the pressure medium to achieve the splitting and in practice it is a question of cutting rather than forcing apart the two adjacent layers. It is therefore not possible using an apparatus and method according to GB-A-1 377 797 to achieve a splitting which results in the desired beautiful natural so-called split surfaces as is obtained when splitting laminated mineral blocks by hand with the aid of a wedge or hammer or metal wedges. Furthermore this apparatus and method is relatively complicated, especially because the Mineral block is to be placed in a housing to create the vacuum.
This method is only used to split mineral blocks that are essentially used to fulfill a special function and not primarily to achieve a special appearance, and it is necessary to work with such high pressures for the pressure medium for splitting that the desired beautiful natural so-called split surfaces cannot be achieved, but these surfaces are damaged by the cutting effect of the pressure medium.
The invention is based on the object of providing a remedy for the above-mentioned disadvantages of known methods and devices for splitting laminated mineral blocks along an interface between two layers by developing a method and a device which allow efficient complete splitting, which are acceptable in terms of working conditions, generate minimal material waste and are nevertheless suitable for obtaining the desired beautiful natural so-called split surfaces.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by a method and a device according to the appended independent claims 1 and 7.
The features of the characterizing part of the new claim 1 make it possible to use the pressurized medium for splitting a laminated mineral block along an interface between two layers at such a low pressure that the desired beautiful natural so-called split surfaces are obtained, because the medium under low pressure, thanks to the seal along the outer boundary walls of the mineral block at the level of the transition between the two layers, manages to spread between the layers and push them apart, so that the compressive forces act on the two layers very close to the propagation front of the fracture thus created.
The device according to claim 7 can be used for splitting laminated mineral blocks along an intermediate surface between two layers, thereby solving the problem underlying the invention. This is achieved by the fact that elements made of substantially flat and substantially impermeable to the pressurized medium pieces for sealing the mineral block are arranged along its outer walls at the level of the transition between the two layers, that a force-generating device for pressurizing the flat material pieces is arranged in order to press the material pieces against the two layers on either side of the transition between the two layers along at least the main part of the boundary walls of the mineral block, wherein the material piece has an opening in the region of the feed location for the medium and the feed means comprise a medium line opening into the opening, and wherein the parts of the material piece surrounding the opening are arranged so that that they are sealingly connected to the periphery of the medium line. Thus, the method according to claim 1 can be carried out in an effective manner by using this device, so that it is possible to use low pressures for the pressure medium and not to damage the split surfaces obtained by splitting the laminated mineral blocks due to the sealing effect of the flat pieces of material and the way in which they are attached to the laminated mineral block in process.
Neither the hearing nor the lung condition of the person performing the splitting are damaged, since neither noise nor dust clouds are generated by the splitting.
The person only has to monitor the operation of the device used for splitting. Furthermore, the need for frequent breaks is eliminated, since the work is not physically difficult for the person involved.
It may be necessary in certain cases to apply a small initial break prior to the addition of pressure medium, for example by a wedge, but even in such a case the portion of the surface damaged by the wedge and having to be cut off will be considerably smaller than if several wedges have to be driven in to produce a split. In some cases the initial break can be omitted and any material waste as a result of the wedge marks can be completely eliminated.
It should be emphasized that the splitting according to the invention is carried out by pushing two layers apart and not by cutting in a plane parallel to these layers. Such cutting, which could be carried out mechanically, for example by sawing or by feeding a medium under very high pressure, as for example according to GB-A-1 377 597 and DE-A-906 072, would not lead to the desired split surfaces with small waves.
The medium is advantageously water and it is possible to supply water under a surprisingly low pressure of, for example, about 2 bar and still achieve cracking as the water seeks its way through the mineral block while forcing the two layers apart. The possibilities offered by the use of this low pressure mean that the flow of medium to the surfaces formed on either side of the fracture obtained is very moderate and consequently damage to these is avoided.
Further advantages and preferred features of the invention will become apparent from the following description and the other appended claims.
Fig. 5 is a schematic side view of a section to explain how a mineral block is split according to the invention by spreading water between two layers.
Fig. 1 shows schematically how a mica slate block is split or separated into slabs. The slate block 1 is usually sawn perpendicular to the extent of the various layers so that it receives substantially smooth boundary walls. The thickness of such a block 1 is normally 30 cm and such a block contains a large number of, for example, 50 layers. Slate slabs with a thickness of about 10 - 40 mm are usually required so that slabs consisting of several layers have to be split from the slate block. For the sake of clarity, only the intermediate surfaces along which it must be split are shown. It is necessary to drive chisels or wedges 2 between layers substantially at half the thickness of the block in order to prevent the occurrence of fracture forces acting obliquely on the block. Several chisels are driven in spaced apart along at least one boundary wall of the block. The figure shows such chisels still remaining in the block, while a chisel driven into the block is removed to illustrate the damaging mark 3 remaining behind the chisel. By striking the chisels into the block, a fracture 4 will propagate along the intermediate surface between two layers between which the chisels have been driven into the block. Splitting of the slate block 1 is achieved in this way. When this splitting has taken place, the two resulting slate block parts can again be halved in thickness by driving chisels between two layers.
The disadvantages of this type of division have been discussed in detail above.
Verkürzen der Hydraulikzylinder 7.A preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown in simplified perspective in Fig. 2. The device has a bed 5 which is formed by spaced rollers 6 which are arranged in such a way that they move a mineral block 1 to be split along the interface between two layers. The bed 5 is supported by force-generating means 7 in the form of hydraulic cylinders from a frame 8 resting on the floor. The bed can be raised and lowered by lengthening or shortening the hydraulic cylinders 7.
The device further comprises a framework 9 and second force developing means 10, also in the form of a hydraulic cylinder, arranged to act between the framework 9 and a pressure plate 11 arranged at one end of the force developing means so that the plate 11 is pressed against the top of the mineral block 1 and thereby clamps and fixes the block between the pressure plate 11 and the rollers 6 of the bed 5. The mineral block 1 can thus be held in a substantially fixed position during the splitting process. However, the force developing means 10 preferably allow a small movement of a few mm of the mineral block in the vertical direction by counter pressure against the pressure plate 11 during the penetration of medium into the mineral block 1 and the slight separation of the mineral block parts located on either side of the splitting surface in question.
Two rulers 12 in the form of square, substantially parallel beams extending in a horizontal plane are arranged on the framework 9 so as to be movable towards and away from each other. These rulers 12 are, however, not vertically movable. The movements of the rulers are achieved by means 13 developing third forces which act between the framework 9 and the respective ruler, these means also having the form of hydraulic cylinders. The third forces developing means 13 are conveniently controlled jointly by a single command. A sealing element in the form of a rubber strip 14 is attached to the surface of each ruler facing the other ruler, ie the mineral block 1 (see in particular Fig. 4). The rubber strip 14 here has the same width as the respective ruler 12, but could also be considerably narrower if a very direct fracture propagation is expected, since it is only necessary that it presses on each side of the fracture formed. It would be possible to reduce the contact pressure of the force developing means 13 if the strip were narrower.
The device further comprises a plate 15 arranged to be pressed against a boundary wall of the mineral block which extends substantially perpendicular to the extension of the rulers. Fourth force developing means 16 in the form of a hydraulic cylinder are arranged to act between a plate 15 and a part 18 which can be secured to the rest of the framework by means of stretching screws 17. The surface of the plate 15 facing the mineral block 1 is provided with a nozzle 19 (see also Fig. 10) which consists of a rubber strip 20 which extends substantially horizontally and has an opening. A line for pressurized medium in the form of a water hose 22 is led through the plate and to the opening 21 of the nozzle 19. The end of the hose is indicated in Fig. 3. The device for supplying water through the line 22 is not shown in the figures and this can be accomplished in any known manner.
The rubber strip 20 extends along the entire width of the mineral block up to the rubber strips of the two rulers, so that the rubber strips 14 and 20, except for the opening 21, form a watertight boundary of the mineral block 1 along the three boundary walls of the mineral block over an area that corresponds vertically to the width of the strips. It can be ensured that the rubber strips 14 are tightly connected to the rubber strips 20 by adjusting the stretching screws 17. Fig. 4 shows how a plate 15 with the strip 20 is inserted between the rulers 12, but the rulers 12 can be arranged so that they do not protrude beyond the end edge of the block and the length of the strip 20 can be increased to a suitable extent in order to adapt the device to mineral blocks of different widths.
Fig. 5 zeigt, wie das stattfindet. The operation of the device described above will now be described with reference to Figures 3 - 5. A mineral block to be split along the interface between two layers can be in several places in order to separate the mineral block into several stone plates, the mineral block being first cut so that it receives uniform lateral boundary walls in the shape according to Figure 2. This block is then placed on the bed formed by the rollers 6 and the second force developing means 10 are actuated in order to fix the mineral block with respect to the bed 5. The force developing means 7 are then actuated in such a way that the bed 5 is moved in a vertical direction with respect to the rulers provided with the rubber strips 14 and the nozzle 19. This movement takes place up to a position at which a first interface, along the to be split lies in a horizontal plane approximately midway between the upper edge and the lower edge of the rubber strips 14. When this position is reached, the third force developing means 13 are actuated to bring the rulers 12 towards each other so that the rubber strips 14 press sealingly against the two layers of the mineral block on each side of the transition between the two layers. The fourth force developing means 16 are then actuated to press the nozzle 19 into sealing pressure contact against the mineral block on both sides of the same layer transition. It is possible to provide the mineral block with a small initial fracture 24 at the point which is to be located exactly opposite the opening 21 of the nozzle. Such an initial fracture 24 is illustrated in Fig. 3 and assists in initiating the desired split fracture. All layers of the upper plates to be split from the mineral block are shown in this figure, while for the rest only the boundary layer surfaces along which splitting is to take place are shown. Water under a comparatively low pressure is then supplied to the opening 21 (experiments have shown that pressures of less than 2 bar are sufficient in some cases). However, higher pressures such as 10 bar may be required to initiate fracture formation. The water penetrates into the initial fracture 24 and is prevented from escaping from the mineral block by the rubber strips 20 and 14. The water will thus develop forces in a direction substantially perpendicular to the planes of the two layers and will increasingly push the two layers apart in propagation of a fracture which will rapidly be filled with water towards the end 25 of the mineral block 1 opposite the opening 21. Fig. 5 shows how this takes place. Accordingly, the lever arms during this pushing apart will be very small, as the water continuously fills the fracture formed and develops forces in the area of the current fracture front that act to push it apart. The risk of accidental breakage is therefore very small. Due to the small lever arms, it is also possible to split the mineral block at a desired location, ie in such a way that the mineral block parts located on both sides of the fracture formed have significantly different strengths.
The water supply to the nozzle 19 is interrupted and the force developing means 16 and 13 are operated so that the sealing strips are moved away from the mineral block 1 when the fracture has spread along the entire interface in question and the splitting is therefore completed. Thereafter, the force developing means 7 are operated to move the bed 5 and thus the mineral block in a vertical direction to a position suitable for carrying out the next split, after which the operations described above are repeated for its realization. In this way, for example, 30 mm from the top of the mineral block, a split along the interface between two layers can be started and the mineral block can be gradually moved upwards while the splitting of thin plates takes place from the lower part of the mineral block until the block consists only of such thin plates.
It would be possible, for example, to use a medium other than water to split the mineral block, for example any other liquid or even a gas under a certain excess pressure. However, it must be noted that the pressure of the medium supplied must be low so that the splitting is achieved by pushing the two layers apart and not by cutting along a plane in the interface between the two layers.
It would also be possible to provide sealing elements at the end 25 of the mineral block so that the mineral block is essentially sealed all the way around, but it would then be necessary to provide certain outflow openings for the medium near this end.
The block to be split by the device can, of course, appear in completely different shapes from that shown in the figures and the device will then have to be modified accordingly. It is, however, advantageous that the block of material has smooth boundary walls, but this is not absolutely necessary, and it would also be conceivable to provide some other type of sealing elements, for example some type of sealing paste that can be sprayed onto and along the mineral block.
It would also be conceivable to provide some other type of means than the sealing elements to counteract the medium escaping from the mineral block at its boundary turns before the continuous fracture is formed.
It would also be possible to supply the medium at several locations along the periphery of the mineral block, and the supply of the medium on a short side of the mineral block, as shown in Fig. 2, should in no way be considered as a limitation of the invention, since the location or locations of supply could just as well be located on a larger side of the block.
The information given above regarding the printing of the medium is only examples and does not limit the invention.
