Description
Process for making proteinaceous plastics soft and elastic It is known that structures made from protein substances such as gelatine, glue, casein, albumin and the like, or plastics containing the proteins mentioned, in dried form Conditions usually have a hard and brittle nature. About such artifacts To give them softness, suppleness or elasticity, they are treated with Glycerine or add glycerine to the proteins before shaping. That As an extremely hygroscopic agent, glycerine preserves the protein substance in one certain state of swelling and gives the products manufactured with it the necessary Softness and elasticity.
However, the use of glycerol has disadvantages insofar as It is very difficult to use glycerin to achieve the desired physical properties of the products evenly because of the low fluctuations in humidity In the air, the protein structures processed with glycerine as a result of the water-attracting properties In most cases, the effect of the glycerine will be very unfavorable. For this there is also the fact that the structures containing glycerine and water spoil very easily, mold or rot, as dilute glycerine solutions favor the display. Man has tried in the sulfurized oils and fats, i. H. the so-called Turkish red oil, to find a substitute for the glycerin. The sulfurized oils are still there though quite sensitive to water, easily show signs of aging and decomposition and thus have a harmful effect on the proteins.
The invention now consists in the fact that one to soften and elasticize of protein-containing plastics made from gelatine, glue, casein and albumin, the aforementioned Substances higher molecular weight aliphatic alcohols with 6 or more carbon atoms in the molecule or their ethers or esters with organic carbopic acids, which are at most t z contain carbon atoms in the molecule, added alone or in a mixture, optionally in connection with hygroscopic organic or inorganic compounds.
The substances mentioned are advantageously used in the form of Emulsions, for example the extremely stable sulfonates of fatty alcohols or other substances used as emulsifiers, or in the form of solutions in water-soluble mono- or polyhydric alcohols, their ethers or esters. Included these solvents can be used in a wide variety of combinations. Even proves an addition of butanol to the substances mentioned very advantageous, as this increases the solubility of the mixtures. to Ketones can also be used for the same purpose: The higher molecular weight mentioned Alcohols and their derivatives have an excellent softening effect. they are also not very soluble in water and consequently not leachable, of neutral character, stable and therefore do not tend to decompose. Furthermore, these agents are harmless, insensitive to moisture fluctuations and do not deteriorate or Putrefaction.
As alcohols come for the present purposes, for. B. Consider: Octyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, the alcohol mixture obtained by reducing coconut and palm kernel oil fatty acid, oleic alcohol contained in the marine animal oils unsaturated alcohols and the like suitable for the purposes of the present process Derivatives of the alcohols mentioned are, for. B. Octylbutyl, ether, dodecyl monoglycol ether, Dodecyl lactate, oleyl butyrate.
Beispiel i Einer Gelatineschmelze der üblichen Zusammensetzung
in Cetylac:etat, Verwenden.
