Method of making a waterproof cellulose hydrate skin
The production of water-resistant cellulose skins has so far been carried out in such a way that &
the finished dried cellulose skins by a known method with a
Cellulose ester solution coats and then causes the solvent to evaporate. This
The process is relatively cumbersome, since the application of the waterproof coating
only follows the complete production of the cellulose skin. It is therefore
z. B. in the production. Larger webs drying twice and also one
the cellulose skin must be rolled up twice. In addition, these have coatings
the disadvantage that they only adhere superficially and are therefore easy to reassemble
peel off.
According to the invention, an intimately connecting with the base is now
and therefore firmly adhering waterproof cellulose ester coating on cellulose skins
obtained in a simple manner by the fact that the coating is carried out with the manufacture
the cellulose skin combined into one operation. For this purpose, according to the
The usual washing out of the precipitated cellulose skin through the water it contains
displaced a water-miscible cellulose ester solvent and then the
Cellulose skin coated with a cellulose ester lacquer and then in the usual way
dried. It is advantageously used to remove the water from the cellulose skin
those cellulose ester solvents that are compatible with both water and those for the
to be applied cellulose ester varnish are miscible solvents used. By
passing the cellulose web two or more times through the displacing liquid
can be practically complete removal. of the water, so that &
There are no precipitation phenomena in the cellulose ester coating due to residual water
can.
This process only requires a single drying process
and Z. B. in the production of endless webs only a single roll-up is necessary.
Another advantage of the process is that the coating is extraordinary
is firmly connected to the base, since the cellulose ester solution in the with a
-Solvent-soaked cellulose skin diffused into it. You can also do this
because the liquid that displaces the water is replaced by one with this liquid
Miscible and cellulose ester-dissolving liquid or such a liquid mixture
replaced and only then leads the cellulose skin through the cellulose ester solution. to
for this purpose one can, for example, remove the water from the cellulose skin
Use alcohol and then displace it with butyl acetate by touching the skin
pulled through butyl acetate, followed by the application of the cellulose ester solution
he follows. Instead of
Butyl acetate can be used, for. B. also a mixture of butanol
and use ether, which is a very cheap cellulose ester solvent
and is miscible with alcohol.

It has already been proposed to use cellulose films
for photographic purposes with acetylating liquids, e.g. B_ acetic anhydride
to be treated in the presence of free sulfuric acid. This creates a major transformation
the cellulose films in the corresponding ester causes and an inhomogeneous, partly
Obtained product consisting of cellulose and partly of cellulose esters. According to
the invention, however, does not take place any chemical conversion of the cellulose structure to be coated
instead, just a replacement of the water of the regenerated cellulose skin
a liquid that is more suitable for firmly anchoring a cellulose ester coating.
Furthermore, it is already known to apply a cellulose ether film on a still moist cellulose ether film
apply a one-sided coating of dilute acetyl cellulose solution. Here too
there is no displacement of the water before the application of the coating in the manner
of the invention by a water-miscible cellulose ester solvent.
