Zum Schleifen werden diese dann in eine Hülse oder auf einen Dorn gesteckt oder ähnlich befestigt. Dreht man den Hornzylinder dauernd und setzt nur einen Teil einer Stirnseite jeweils der Schleifwirkung aus, so hat der nicht der Schleifwirkung unterworfene Teil Zeit zur Abkühlung; wodurch das beim Hornschleifen so gefürchtete Brennen verhindert wird.
