Für die vollständig aus Stahl bestehenden Ambosse ist die Elastizität und Federkraft des Werkstoffes zu groß; es ergeben sich beim Schmieden leicht Prellschläge. Beim Härten der Amboßbahn kommen leicht Spannungen und Risse in den Körper, und dieser verzieht sich leicht. Gänzlich aus Schmiedeeisen bestehende gepreßte oder geschmiedete Amboßkörper sind, da zu weich, den Anforderungen eines Schmiedeambosses auf die Dauer nichtgewachsen.
