Description
Process for the production of pyruvic acid It is already known that lactic acid or lactic acid salts by oxidizing agents such as hydroperoxide or oxidize potassium permanganate to pyruvic acid or pyruvic acid salts can. These methods have not found technical application because they are only too much dilute aqueous solutions of pyruvic acid or pyruvic acid salts to lead. W i e -1 a n d (Reports 46, P9151 3332) showed that lactic acid is in dilute aqueous solution by shaking. dehydrate with palladium black and proposed this reaction for the preparative production of pyruvic acid. But since this requires large amounts of palladium and the resulting pyruvic acid is further oxidized in large part to acetic acid and carbon dioxide, this method has no use found for technical production.
The oxidation of lactic acid in aqueous solution with iron salts as a catalyst did not lead to any technical utilization, because acetaldehyde is formed in addition to pyruvic acid and a large part of it Pyruvic acid is destroyed by further oxidation.
For technical purposes one has pyruvic acid from tartaric acid or Tartaric salts produced by melting with sulfuric acid and alkali bisulphate. More recently, patent specification 447 838 has also provided a technically useful one Process has become known, which allows lactic acid to lactic acid esters and pyruvic acid ester to come to pyruvic acid. The pyruvic acid ester is obtained by dehydrating lactic acid ester in vapor form. Opposite to the method of patent specification 447 838 is the main advantage that the production of the lactic acid ester and the subsequent saponification of the pyruvic acid ester are not required if one intends to obtain free pyruvic acid. As it is well known that lactic acid cannot be distilled under normal conditions, what the implementation of a catalytic oxidation in vapor form - initially impossible first it was necessary to know that lactic acid reacts with water vapor brought into the gas phase, can be oxidized in a satisfactory manner.
It has now been found that pyruvic acid can be obtained directly from lactic acid and can be obtained in satisfactory yield if lactic acid is mixed with superheated Water vapor brought into vapor form, with oxygen or air or other oxygen-containing Gas mixtures at higher temperatures, such as B. i 5o to 25o ', about those commonly used for the catalytic oxidation of substances in gas or vapor form katalysatorzn_, like r. B. Vanadium pentoxide, expediently on suitable carriers are down> heads. The temperature should be chosen expediently so high that that the contact time can be kept as short as possible. But you can also at relatively low temperatures, e.g. B. at i5o to i8o`, with longer contact time work and achieved good yields of pyruvic acid, which up to 5o o'o the theory and can be more.
To get the lactic acid with the help of superheated steam in vapor form To bring, the more or less dilute acid is expediently sprayed through nozzles in one of superheated steam and, if necessary, of oxygen at the same time or air and the like flowing through evaporation and mixing vessel with large heating and Evaporation area; whereby the temperature and the pressure are advantageously set so that that the rate of distillation is the rate of anhydration of the Lactic acid predominates.
Example ioö g about 70000 lactic acid are used in the course of a Hour finite at about zoo to 23o 'superheated steam atomized and with about mixed with five times the amount of theory of hot air. This mixture of air and steam is passed over a coarse-grained aluminum meal heated to i 9o to zoo = Deposited Boric Acid Vanadium Catalyst.
Die entstandene Brenztraubensäure wird zusamtnen mit unveränderter Milchsäure in Wasser absorbiert. ausbeute etwa 50 ('o.The resulting pyruvic acid is absorbed in water together with unchanged lactic acid. yield about 50 ( 'o.
Example 2 That obtained according to Example i is replaced by a catalyst (according to example i) fed contact apparatus that has a throttle valve at the output. possesses, which is set so that a pressure of about 0.8 atmospheres in the contact space prevails. The contact temperature is about t75 '. Yield 5 5 @ o of theory.
The oxidation can of course also be conducted so that in the aqueous Condensate almost exclusively contained pyruvic acid is next to insignificant Amounts of lactic acid, with the loss of acid due to excessive oxidation and through The decomposition of the pyruvic acid produced is naturally greater.
The concentration of the aqueous condensates and the separation of pyruvic acid and lactic acid takes place according to the usual .Methods. You can z. B. pyruvic acid from the aqueous pyruvic acid-lactic acid solution with or without the aid of Distill off steam, or you can use the two acids in the form of their sodium salts separate from each other with alcohol. Sodium lactate is dissolved in alcohol, sodium pyrovinate remains unsolved.
The process enables the direct in a technically useful manner Production of pyruvic acid from lactic acid.
