Description

Silicon brass bearing shell The invention relates to a Bearing shell, especially for the axles of railroad cars and locomotives. These Bearing shells are known to be filled with soft metal on the inside, which is the case with normal Operation only comes into contact with the axis. But it can happen that the Soft metal melts out, so that at least for a time, a contact between the metal of the bearing shell itself and the axle takes place. The bearing shell is made mostly made entirely of gunmetal or an iron body on the inner surface is covered with gunmetal, so that after the melting of the soft metal, the axis runs on gunmetal. The friction between the gunmetal and the axle is too great, than that the gunmetal could serve as an emergency storage for a long time without damage.

According to the invention, in order to make it more suitable as an emergency bearing after the soft metal has been melted out, the bearing shell is made of the known silicon brass, which, however, has been given the following new composition for the present purpose Copper ....... 55 -65 0 /, Lead ........... 0.25-0.45 0 / o Tin ........... i - 2.7 0/0 Iron ......... 0.4 - 1.3 0/0 Zinc ........... 42 q.0 0 / o Silicon ........ 0.04-0.05 0 / o Such a bearing shell has a certain softness and suppleness on the surface, i.e. also on the bearing surface, with greater average strength, which means that after the soft metal has melted away, the friction on the axle is considerably less than if gunmetal with the axle comes into contact. This reduces the generation of heat and the bearing shell is better able to dissipate the heat that still occurs. Above all, damage to the axle is avoided, so that the otherwise observed grooves in the axle do not appear. The dissipation of the already reduced heat development is also favored by the alloy itself, which in turn increases the resistance of the bearing shell.
