Kupfer zeichnet sich vor allen anderen für die Herstellung von Kolbenringen in Betracht kommenden Metallen dadurch aus, daß es die größte Leitfähigkeit für Wärme aufweist und sich deswegen als Baustoff für Kolbenringe an erster Stelle eignet. Das hohe spezifische Gewicht des Kupfers sowie seine geringe Härte schließen jedoch seine Verwendung für Kolben aus. Dieser Nachteil fällt jedoch bei der Verwendung von Kupfer für nach dem Patent 389844 hergestellte Dichtungsringe weg, da die Ringe aus hartgewalztem und dünnem Kupferblech hergestellt sind. Das Gewicht der neuen Kolbenringe kann somit viel geringer gehalten werden als dasjenige der sonst üblichen Kolbenringe.
