Das hohe spezifische Gewicht des Kupfers sowie seine geringe Härte schließen jedoch seine Verwendung für Kolben aus. Dieser Nachteil fällt jedoch bei der Verwendung von Kupfer für nach dem Patent 389844 hergestellte Dichtungsringe weg, da die Ringe aus hartgewalztem und dünnem Kupferblech hergestellt sind. Das Gewicht der neuen Kolbenringe kann somit viel geringer gehalten werden als dasjenige der sonst üblichen Kolbenringe.
