Die neue Gerbemethode ist bestimmt, als Ersatz der Lohgerberei einzutreten. Sie behält die bisher übliche Art des Reinmachens unverändert bei, erstreckt sich aber auf die beiden folgenden Hauptoperationen des Gerbens: das Garmachen sowohl als die Zurichtung. Das Garmachen ist eine Mineralgerbung, bei welcher an die Stelle der Lohrinden, oder ähnlicher vegetabilischer Gerbstoffe ein Eisenoxydsalz von eigenthümlicher Zubereitung tritt. Bei der Zurichtung greifen sowohl bisher nicht angewendete Stoffe in eigenthümlicher Zubereitung als auch bis dahin nicht angewendete Manipulationen Platz.The new tanning method is intended to replace the tannery. Ist die Gasentwicklung vorüber, so fügt man umgekehrt zu der das Eisen nur als Eisenoxyd enthaltenden Lösung wieder Eisenvitriol, bis das abermals auftretende Aufbrausen aufgehört hat. Die Lösung hat nun eine gelbrothe Farbe und mehr oder weniger syrupartige Beschaffenheit. Sie hinterläfst, langsam verdunstet, das trockene Eisenoxydsalz als einen klaren, durchsichtigen, tief rothgelben ins orange gehenden Firnifs. In diesen seinen physikalischen Eigenschaften ist das nach obigem Verfahren erzeugte basisch schwefelsaure Eisenoxyd wesentlich verschieden von dem nach den chemischen Lehrbüchern dargestellten im Handel vorkommenden. Das letztere giebt keine syrupartige Lösung, ist von gelblich brauner Farbe und zersetzt sich in concentrirt wäfsriger Lösung beim Kochen, während das Präparat nach obiger Art in Lösung von 30—40⁰B. sich unzersetzt kochen läfst. Endlich wird das Salz der angegebenen Präparation ohne Vergleich besser und reichlicher von der thierischen Haut beim Gerben aufgenommen.To a boiling solution of vitriol of iron is added as much nitric acid as is necessary to completely oxidize it. Hierdurch fällt die in der gegenwärtigen Zurichtung übliche kostspielige und langwierige Handarbeit fort, welche die Qualität des Leders allzusehr von der Aufmerksamkeit und Geschicklichkeit des Arbeiters abhängig macht, nämlich das Einschmieren des Leders durch Hand mit Talg, Degras etc., das Aushängen in der Trockenstube, das Walken in der Trommel (um das Fett genügend in das Leder hineinzuarbeiten) und endlich das Abstofsen des überschüssigen Fettes. Zu den Fettlösungen verwendet man neben den jetzt gebräuchlichen Schmiermitteln, die bis dahin nicht angewendeten Stoffe Stearin und Paraffin, welche in üblicher Weise gelöst werden.After the skin is tanned with the iron salt solution described above, the same becomes treated with fats in dissolved form and with the iron soap I invented. Diese Trommel besteht aus einem Walkfasse W, welches sich um die hohlen Zapfen Z Z'¹ bewegt und mit dem Ventilator V durch das Rohr R verbunden ist. Der Ventilator treibt die Luft durch den hohlen Zapfen Z, der in die beiden Röhren »z und m' ausgeht und jagt dieselbe an den Umfang des Walkfasses W und durch die Häute hindurch. Letztere werden mit der Eisenseife in das WaIkfafs gebracht und dieses gleichzeitig mit dem Ventilator in drehende Bewegung gebracht.The iron soap I invented is made by precipitating soap from soap solutions using the above-mentioned iron salt solution.
