Heizkörpern derart versehen wird, daß die jeweils zwischen einzelnen Kühl- und Heizflächen liegenden Schichten dünn sind. Es ist dabei erforderlich, die Heizkörper so zu wählen, daß die Unterteilung der Absorptionsmassen in dünne, senkrecht zur Gasrichtung liegende, also wagerechte Schichten erfolgt. Dies erreicht man zum Beispiel durch ein System von horizontalen Heizschlangen, welche einzeln parallel oder hintereinandergeschaltet werden können. So kann man das Kühlen oder Erhitzen an denjenigen Stellen der Absorptionsmasse ausführen, wo der Arbeitsvorgang es erfordert. Man erhält so Absorptionsapparate von großer Kapazität an Absorptionsmassen, welche den Durchgang von Gasen nur geringen und gleichmäßigen Widerstand bieten und sich dadurch vorteilhaft von den mit geraden, senkrechten Heizrohren ausgestatteten Apparaten unterscheiden. Dadurch wird auch erzielt, daß man große Temperaturdifferenzen rasch herstellen kann, so daß der Wirkungsgrad des Verfahrens ein sehr hoher wird. Bei einer Ausführungsform der vorstehend bezeichneten Vorrichtung wird das Adsorptionsgefäß von einzelnen Rohrleitungen durchzogen, die zum Umlauf von Kühlwasser oder Kühllösungen bzw. von Wasserdampf dienen.
