Besonders für die chromolithographische Technik sind die Resultate der üblichen photomechanischen Übertragung ungenügend. Das bekannte Verfahren für einfache Zink- oder Steinautos besteht darin, daß mit dem Rasternegativ auf Zink oder Stein kopiert wird. Weil aber die üblichen Rasternegative zu unvollkommen sind, uni auf dem Zink oder Stein eine originalgetreue Kopie zu ergeben, so wird, da an dem Rasternegativ selbst eine manuelle Retusche unmöglich ist, die Kopie zur Verbesserung auf dem Zink oder Stein einer Nachbearbeitung unterzogen. Der Ätzer kann dabei einerseits die Lichter spitz ätzen oder ganz weiß halten, anderseits den Schatten mehr Tiefe geben. Bei dieser Effekt@ätzung leidet jedoch die Halbtonzerlegung mehr oder weniger stark, was zur Folge hat, daß eine wirkliche Übereinstimmung mit dem Original nicht zu erzielen ist. Die alsdann nach diesem zweiten Negativ hergestellten Druckplatten geben ohne jede manuelle Retusche das Original wieder. Die Art des neuen Verfahrens, das auf der richtigen Zerlegung der Halbtöne beruht und keine Teil- oder Effektätzung kennt, bedingt es, daß man - technisch vollkommene Instrumente vorausgesetzt - für die originalgetreue Wiedergabe auch der farbenreichsten Bilder nicht mehr als drei Farbendruckplatten braucht.
