Das farbige Diapositiv -evtl. auch der Farbenfilter - wird darauf entfernt und hierfür die Maske vorgeschaltet. Dadurch überlegen sich die grünen Stellen mit einem Netz und können so auf der Atzplatte ohne Effektätzung spitz geätzt werden. Man kann natürlich statt der Maske allein auch Maske und Farbendiapositiv zusammen vorschalten. Dieselbe Manipulation wird -wenigstens für den Rotationsfarbendruck -zweckmäßig auch bei den anderen Teilnegativen vorgenommen, indem also die komplementären Farben ungedeckt bleiben. Besondere Wirkungen werden erzielt, wenn man die Retusche der Masken mit einer Farbe ausführt, die in der Durchsicht den Pinselstrich sehen läßt. Es entsteht dann ein farbiges Bild, das aquarellähnliche Wirkung hat.
